This paper presents a novel method to generate answers for non-extraction machine reading comprehension (MRC) tasks whose answers cannot be simply extracted as one span from the given passages. Using a pointer network-style extractive decoder for such type of MRC may result in unsatisfactory performance when the ground-truth answers are given by human annotators or highly re-paraphrased from parts of the passages. On the other hand, using generative decoder cannot well guarantee the resulted answers with well-formed syntax and semantics when encountering long sentences. Therefore, to alleviate the obvious drawbacks of both sides, we propose an answer making-up method from extracted multi-spans that are learned by our model as highly confident n-gram candidates in the given passage. That is, the returned answers are composed of discontinuous multi-spans but not just one consecutive span in the given passages anymore. The proposed method is simple but effective: empirical experiments on MS MARCO show that the proposed method has a better performance on accurately generating long answers, and substantially outperforms two competitive typical one-span and Seq2Seq baseline decoders. Filling the gap of utterance-aware and speaker-aware representation for multi-turn dialogue

A multi-turn dialogue is composed of multiple utterances from two or more different speaker roles. Thus utterance- and speaker-aware clues are supposed to be well captured in models. However, in the existing retrieval-based multi-turn dialogue modeling, the pre-trained language models (PrLMs) as encoder represent the dialogues coarsely by taking the pairwise dialogue history and candidate response as a whole, the hierarchical information on either utterance interrelation or speaker roles coupled in such representations is not well addressed. In this work, we propose a novel model to fill such a gap by modeling the effective utterance-aware and speaker-aware representations entailed in a dialogue history. In detail, we decouple the contextualized word representations by masking mechanisms in Transformer-based PrLM, making each word only focus on the words in current utterance, other utterances, two speaker roles (i.e., utterances of sender and utterances of receiver), respectively. Experimental results show that our method boosts the strong ELECTRA baseline substantially in four public benchmark datasets, and achieves various new state-of-the-art performance over previous methods. In recent years, the research of dependency parsing focuses on improving the accuracy of in-domain data and has made remarkable progress. However, the real world is different from a single scenario dataset, filled with countless scenarios that are not covered by the dataset, namely, out-of-domain. As a result, parsers that perform well on the in-domain data often suffer significant performance degradation on the out-of-domain data. Therefore, in order to adapt the existing in-domain parsers with substantial performance to the new domain scenario, cross-domain transfer learning techniques are essential to solve the domain problem in parsing. In this paper, we examine two scenarios for cross-domain transfer learning: semi-supervised and unsupervised cross-domain transfer learning. Specifically, we adopt a pretrained language model BERT for training on the source domain (in-domain) data at subword level and introduce two tri-training variant methods for the two scenarios so as to achieve the goal of cross-domain transfer learning. The system based on this paper participated in NLPCC-2019-shared-task on cross-domain dependency parsing and won the first place on the "subtask3-un-open" and "subtask4-semi-open" subtasks, indicating the effectiveness of the approaches adopted. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

What is that in your hand? Recognizing grasped objects via forearm electromyography sensing

Knowing the object in hand can offer essential contextual information revealing a user's fine-grained activities. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility, accuracy, and robustness of recognizing the uninstrumented object in a user's hand by sensing and decoding her forearm muscular activities via off-the-shelf electromyography (EMG) sensors. We present results from three studies to advance our fundamental understanding of the opportunities that EMG brings in object interaction recognition. In the first study, we investigated the influence of physical properties of objects such as shape, size, and weight on EMG signals. We also conducted a thorough exploration of the feature spaces and sensor positions which can provide a solid base to rely on for future designers and practitioners for such interactive technique. In the second study, we assessed the feasibility and accuracy of inferring the types of grasped objects via using forearm muscular activity as a cue. Our results indicate that the types of objects can be recognized with up to 94.2% accuracy by employing user-dependent training. In the third study, we investigated the robustness of this approach in a realistic office setting where users were allowed to interact with objects as they would naturally. Our approach achieved up to 82.5% accuracy in discriminating 15 types of objects, even when training and testing phrases were purposefully performed on different days to incorporate changes in EMG patterns over time. Overall, this work contributes a set of fundamental findings and guidelines on using EMG technologies for object-based activity tracking. © 2018 Association for Computing Machinery.

Emerging self-ensembling methods have achieved promising semi-supervised segmentation performances on medical images through forcing consistent predictions of unannotated data under different perturbations. However, the consistency only penalizes on independent pixel-level predictions, making structure-level information of predictions not exploited in the learning procedure. In view of this, we propose a novel structure-aware entropy regularized mean teacher model to address the above limitation. Specifically, we firstly introduce the entropy minimization principle to the student network, thereby adjusting itself to produce high-confident predictions of unannotated images. Based on this, we design a local structural consistency loss to encourage the consistency of inter-voxel similarities within the same local region of predictions from teacher and student networks. To further capture local structural dependencies, we enforce the global structural consistency by matching the weighted self-information maps between two networks. In this way, our model can minimize the prediction uncertainty of unannotated images, and more importantly that it can capture local and global structural information and their complementarity. We evaluate the proposed method on a publicly available 3D left atrium MR image dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves outstanding segmentation performances than the state-of-the-art approaches in scenes with limited annotated images. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a leading cause of drug-resistant focal epilepsy, which can be cured by surgery. These lesions are extremely subtle and often missed even by expert neuroradiologists. "Ground truth" manual lesion masks are therefore expensive, limited and have large inter-rater variability. Existing FCD detection methods are limited by high numbers of false positive predictions, primarily due to vertex- or patch-based approaches that lack whole-brain context. Here, we propose to approach the problem as semantic segmentation using graph convolutional networks (GCN), which allows our model to learn spatial relationships between brain regions. To address the specific challenges of FCD identification, our proposed model includes an auxiliary loss to predict distance from the lesion to reduce false positives and a weak supervision classification loss to facilitate learning from uncertain lesion masks. On a multi-centre dataset of 1015 participants with surface-based features and manual lesion masks from structural MRI data, the proposed GCN achieved an AUC of 0.74, a significant improvement against a previously used vertex-wise multi-layer perceptron (MLP) classifier (AUC 0.64). With sensitivity thresholded at 67%, the GCN had a specificity of 71% in comparison to 49% when using the MLP. This improvement in specificity is vital for clinical integration of lesion-detection tools into the radiological workflow, through increasing clinical confidence in the use of AI radiological adjuncts and reducing the number of areas requiring expert review. © 2023, CC BY.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. We conducted a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of 100,204 CRC cases and 154,587 controls of European and east Asian ancestry, identifying 205 independent risk associations, of which 50 were unreported. We performed integrative genomic, transcriptomic and methylomic analyses across large bowel mucosa and other tissues. Transcriptome- and methylome-wide association studies revealed an additional 53 risk associations. We identified 155 high-confidence effector genes functionally linked to CRC risk, many of which had no previously established role in CRC. These have multiple different functions and specifically indicate that variation in normal colorectal homeostasis, proliferation, cell adhesion, migration, immunity and microbial interactions determines CRC risk. Crosstissue analyses indicated that over a third of effector genes most probably act outside the colonic mucosa. Our findings provide insights into colorectal oncogenesis and highlight potential targets across tissues for new CRC treatment and chemoprevention strategies.

Background Diarrhoeal diseases claim more than 1 million lives annually and are a leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years. Comprehensive global estimates of the diarrhoeal disease burden for specific age groups of children younger than 5 years are scarce, and the burden in children older than 5 years and in adults is also understudied. We used results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to assess the burden of, and trends in, diarrhoeal diseases overall and attributable to 13 pathogens, as well as the contributions of associated risk factors, in children and adults in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021. Methods We used the Cause of Death Ensemble modelling strategy to analyse vital registration data, verbal autopsy data, mortality surveillance data, and minimally invasive tissue sampling data. We used DisMod-MR (version 2.1), a Bayesian meta-regression tool, to analyse incidence and prevalence data identified via systematic reviews, population-based surveys, and claims and inpatient data. We calculated diarrhoeal disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) as the sum of years of life lost (YLLs) and years lived with disability (YLDs) for each location, year, and age-sex group. For aetiology estimation, we used a counterfactual approach to quantify population-attributable fractions (PAFs). Additionally, we estimated the diarrhoeal disease burden attributable to the independent effects of risk factors using the comparative risk assessment framework. Findings In 2021, diarrhoeal diseases caused an estimated 1.17 million (95% uncertainty interval 0.793-1.62) deaths globally, representing a 60.3% (50.6-69.0) decrease since 1990 (2.93 million [2.31-3.73] deaths). The most pronounced decline was in children younger than 5 years, with a 79.2% (72.4-84.6) decrease in diarrhoeal deaths. Ambient temperatures are rising globally, with the greatest increases recorded at night. Concurrently, the prevalence of insufficient sleep is increasing in many populations, with substantial costs to human health and well-being. Even though nearly a third of the human lifespan is spent asleep, it remains unknown whether temperature and weather impact objective measures of sleep in real-world settings, globally. Here we link billions of sleep measurements from wearable devices comprising over 7 million nighttime sleep records across 68 countries to local daily meteorological data from 2015 to 2017. Rising nighttime temperatures shorten within-person sleep duration primarily through delayed onset, increasing the probability of insufficient sleep. The effect of temperature on sleep loss is substantially larger for residents from lower income countries and older adults, and females are affected more than are males. Nighttime temperature increases inflict the greatest sleep loss during summer and fall months, and we do not find evidence of short-term acclimatization. Coupling historical behavioral measurements with output from climate models, we project that climate change will further erode human sleep, producing substantial geographic inequalities.
