Traditional statistical methods have become insufficient when applied to image analysis. The increasing size of data volume and its complexity demands new statistical approaches and algorithms. Current methods imply losing intrinsic data structures, for example when data comes from multiway arrays. In this work we concentrate in two applications i) A pre-diagnostic smartphone application for detection of cardiovascular abnormalities through the analysis of heartbeat sounds and the use of augmented reality for displaying valuable information to the end user in an immersive experience. Using the latest augmented reality smartphone applications, a digital stethoscope, heartbeat audios and classification using neural networks, we measure a user's heartbeat and output in real time, a pre-diagnostic of their current cardiovascular health. ii) A study concerning comatose patients, based on a Diffusion Tensor Image Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) dataset that predicts long-term outcome for patients having suffered a brain traumatic injury. MRI images were obtained from 104 comatose patients, 65 with positive outcome and 39 with negative outcome, 39 controls were used. The fact that each volumetric image led into a 143x255726x4 tensor input, is used to briefly explain how new multiway methods could be useful in image analysis methods.

Previous studies that involve measuring EEG, or electroencephalograms, have mainly been experimentally-driven projects;for instance, EEG has long been used in research to help identify and elucidate our understanding of many neuroscientific, cognitive, and clinical issues (e.g., sleep, seizures, memory). However, advances in technology have made EEG more accessible to the population. This opens up lines for EEG to provide more information about brain activity in everyday life, rather than in a laboratory setting. To take advantage of the technological advances that have allowed for this, we introduce the Brain-EE system, a method for evaluating user engaged enjoyment that uses a commercially available EEG tool (Muse). During testing, fifteen participants engaged in two tasks (playing two different video games via tablet), and their EEG data were recorded. The Brain-EE system supported much of the previous literature on enjoyment;increases in frontal theta activity strongly and reliably predicted which game each individual participant preferred. We hope to develop the Brain-EE system further in order to contribute to a wide variety of applications (e.g., usability testing, clinical or experimental applications, evaluation methods, etc.). My research is focusing on developing smart robotic rehabilitation interfaces that use machine intelligence to adjust the level of difficulty, assess physical and mental obstacles on the part of the user, and provide analysis of the multi-sensing data collected in real time as the user exercises. The main goal of the interfaces is to engage the patient in repetitive exercise sessions and to provide better data visualization to the therapist for the patient's recovery progress. In this doctoral consortium, I will present three prototype user interfaces that can be applied in assistive environments and enhance the productivity and interaction among therapist and patient. The data processing and the decision making algorithms compose the core components of this study.

Background: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) aim to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Understanding the current state of the HIV epidemic and its change over time is essential to this effort. This study assesses the current sex-specific HIV burden in 204 countries and territories and measures progress in the control of the epidemic. Methods: To estimate age-specific and sex-specific trends in 48 of 204 countries, we extended the Estimation and Projection Package Age-Sex Model to also implement the spectrum paediatric model. We used this model in cases where age and sex specific HIV-seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care-clinic sentinel surveillance data were available. For the remaining 156 of 204 locations, we developed a cohort-incidence bias adjustment to derive incidence as a function of cause-of-death data from vital registration systems. The incidence was input to a custom Spectrum model. To assess progress, we measured the percentage change in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 (threshold >75% decline), the ratio of incident cases to number of people living with HIV (incidence-to-prevalence ratio threshold <0·03), and the ratio of incident cases to deaths (incidence-to-mortality ratio threshold <1·0). Findings: In 2019, there were 36·8 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 35·1–38·9) people living with HIV worldwide. There were 0·84 males (95% UI 0·78–0·91) per female living with HIV in 2019, 0·99 male infections (0·91–1·10) for every female infection, and 1·02 male deaths (0·95–1·10) per female death. Global progress in incident cases and deaths between 2010 and 2019 was driven by sub-Saharan Africa (with a 28·52% decrease in incident cases, 95% UI 19·58–35·43, and a 39·66% decrease in deaths, 36·49–42·36). Elsewhere, the incidence remained stable or increased, whereas deaths generally decreased. Offline EEG-based driver drowsiness estimation using enhanced batch-mode active learning (EBMAL) for regression

There are many important regression problems in real-world brain-computer interface (BCI) applications, e.g., driver drowsiness estimation from EEG signals. This paper considers offline analysis: given a pool of unlabeled EEG epochs recorded during driving, how do we optimally select a small number of them to label so that an accurate regression model can be built from them to label the rest? Active learning is a promising solution to this problem, but interestingly, to our best knowledge, it has not been used for regression problems in BCI so far. This paper proposes a novel enhanced batch-mode active learning (EBMAL) approach for regression, which improves upon a baseline active learning algorithm by increasing the reliability, representativeness and diversity of the selected samples to achieve better regression performance. We validate its effectiveness using driver drowsiness estimation from EEG signals. However, EBMAL is a general approach that can also be applied to many other offline regression problems beyond BCI. Agreement rate initialized maximum likelihood estimator for ensemble classifier aggregation and its application in brain-computer interface

Ensemble learning is a powerful approach to construct a strong learner from multiple base learners. The most popular way to aggregate an ensemble of classifiers is majority voting, which assigns a sample to the class that most base classifiers vote for. However, improved performance can be obtained by assigning weights to the base classifiers according to their accuracy. This paper proposes an agreement rate initialized maximum likelihood estimator (ARIMLE) to optimally fuse the base classifiers. ARIMLE first uses a simplified agreement rate method to estimate the classification accuracy of each base classifier from the unlabeled samples, then employs the accuracies to initialize a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), and finally uses the expectation-maximization algorithm to refine the MLE. Extensive experiments on visually evoked potential classification in a brain-computer interface application show that ARIMLE outperforms majority voting, and also achieves better or comparable performance with several other state-of-the-art classifier combination approaches.
