Controlling fnger impedance is critical for successful grasping. Understanding how humans achieve this is of great interest for learning about human motor control, as well as for applications in robotic grasping. There have been a number of studies on finger impedance in both the robotics and biological fields. They almost exclusively consider only stiffness and viscosity. However, inertia may play an important role in certain grasps, and is important for calculation of the other impedance properties. This paper reports current progress of a project to create a geometric model of the hand for predicting hand/grasp inertia at different configurations (sensed by a glove that measures joint angles) during a variety of tasks.

In this paper a graph-based approach to the task of textual entailment between a Text and Hypothesis is presented. The approach takes into account the full lexico-syntactic context of both the Text and Hypothesis and relies heavily on the concept of subsumption. It starts with mapping the Text and Hypothesis into graphstructures where nodes represent concepts and edges represent lexico-syntactic relations among concepts. Based on a subsumption score between the Text-graph and Hypothesis-graph an entailment decision is made. A novel feature of our approach is the handling of negation. The results obtained from a standard entailment test data set are better than results reported by systems that use similar knowledge resources. We also found that a tf-idf approach performs close to chance for sentence-like Texts and Hypotheses.

In this paper, we propose a new supervised compound learning algorithm for training our constructed approximated bivariate non-tensor product adaptive pre-wavelet neural network (APWNN). On the one hand, the linear weights of APWNN are trained by the self-adaptive learning rate method. On the other hand an extended Kalman filter method is used to update the nonlinear parameters such as dilation parameters and translation parameters. Additionally we demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed method through a concrete example of function approximation.

We present an approach to the verification of temporal epistemic properties in synchronous multi-agent systems (MAS) via bounded model checking (BMC). Based on the semantics of synchronous interpreted system, we extend the temporal logic CTL* by incorporating epistemic modalities and obtain the so-called temporal epistemic logic CTL* K. Though CTL* K is of great expressive power in both temporal and epistemic dimensions, we show that BMC method is still applicable for the universal fragment of CTL* K. We present in some detail a BMC algorithm by using the semantics of synchronous interpreted system. In our approach, agents' knowledge interpreted in synchronous semantics can be skillfully attained by the state position function, which avoids extending the encoding of the states and the transition relation of the plain temporal epistemic model for time domain. A radical change (Feenstra, Holmer, Tromans, Moos and Mieritz 2003) in manufacturing is starting to occur. The Rapid Manufacturing, which can be defined as "the use of an additive manufacturing process to construct parts that are used directly as finished products or components", is set to supersede many current uses of moulds and dies. Rapid Manufacturing (Wohlers 2003) is based on new additive manufacturing techniques that produce fully functional parts directly from a 3D CAD model without the use of tooling. The ambitious scope of the European Initiative CUSTOM-FIT, a Framework 6 Integrated Project, is to create a fully integrated system for the design, production and supply of individualized custom-products. Within the cases under study there are strong connections to sporting articles. This project is being funded by the European Commission over the next four years and a half and will become central to European research concerning Rapid Manufacturing (RM).
