This paper presents a recurrent neural network-based approach for modal parameters identification of structure-unknown systems. The proposed approach involves two steps. The first step is to build a recurrent neural network to map the complex nonlinear relation between the excitations and responses of the structure-unknown system by off-line learning. The second step is to propose a procedure to determine the modal parameters of the system from the trained neural networks. The dynamic characteristics of the structure are directly evaluated from the weighting matrices of the trained recurrent neural network. Furthermore, an illustrative example demonstrates the feasibility of using the proposed method to identify modal parameters of structure-unknown systems. The method proposed can be used to research on fault diagnosis of engineer structure.

In this work a novel automated method, combining time-frequency analysis and expert's knowledge, for the classification of atrial tachyarrhythmias is presented. It is based on the analysis of small ECG segments and their classification into three categories of cardiac rhythm: (a) atrial fibrillation, (b) atrial flutter and (c) normal sinus rhythms. Time-frequency analysis is used to calculate the power spectrum density for each segment. Several spectral characteristics are extracted from the power spectrum density, representing the energy distribution on the time-frequency plane. These characteristics are used as input in an artificial neural network, which classifies each ECG segment into one of the three categories. The method is validated using the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and the obtained average sensitivity and specificity are 93.4% and 96.5%, respectively.

This paper gives contribution to the construction of an image mosaic by pasting together a sequence of photographs taken by a regular digital camera from the same position but in different directions. In order to find the best match between two overlapping images, a fuzzy-genetic based algorithm is presented. A translation vector with a minimal difference between the common picture parts has to be found. The difference is defined using the fuzzyfied contours of each images. The search of the optimal translation is considered as a minimization process. This paper proposes a method that uses genetic algorithms to find the minimum point corresponding to the optimal translation. Using the fuzzy based comparison of the two images yields a fast fitness function, while the implementation of the proposed method in a genetic hardware has a low and variable computational cost. The precision of the method is inverse-proportional with the computational time, which makes it ideal to be used in real time systems.

Superscalar architecture resulting in aggressive performance is a proven architecture for general purpose computation. The negative side effect of aggressive performance is the need for higher number of register read/write ports to supply operands to multiple execution units;the need to resolve false data dependence and true data dependence;the need to dispatch operand ready instructions to execution units and finally retire out of order executed instructions to program order. A processor architecture is proposed in here to address at least some of the above negative side effects. This processor architecture is call LITERAL QUEUE ARCHITECTURE(LQA). In here, LITERAL has the meaning of immediate data. In LQA, opcode and operands in an instruction are treated as a self contained structured element and forms the necessary and sufficient condition for instruction execution. Sequence of instructions embedded with LITERALS are treated as elements in a QUEUE. The elements are executed with respect to time and rotated out of the QUEUE while new elements are rotated into the QUEUE. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

We have developed an efficient method for 3D reconstruction of coronary arteries. Our approach is based on the fusion of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and biplane angiography. The method includes an efficient algorithm for the automatic identification of the regions of interest in IVUS images and a novel methodology for the extraction of the catheter path from biplane angiographies. The estimation of IVUS frames relative twist and the computation of first IVUS frame absolute orientation is also investigated. To assess the performance of the method, a validation procedure is introduced. Several metrics are obtained to verify the reliability of our method in the description of coronary artery morphology. © 2003, Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper we describe an innovative system that aims to integrate heterogeneous distributed healthcare information resources. It is based on the advantages of technologies like the extensible markup language (XML), controlled vocabularies (CVs) such as wordnet and the unified medical language system (UMLS), as well as the common object request broker architecture (CORBA). The proposed approach is based on three key functionalities: a) the user-transparent acquisition of each source's structural information, b) the lexical and semantical analysis based elaboration of the user's initial query and c) the appropriate combination of the results from the two previous functionalities, aiming to the selection of the query that corresponds with each source. CORBA is responsible for providing the interoperability between objects in this disparate distributed environment.

This paper provides an overview of the concept, the functionalities and the architecture of the CHILDCARE platform. The CHILDCARE system aims at supporting the out-of-hospital continuous healthcare management of chronically ill children. Special focus is placed on the utilization of the latest technology accomplishments towards the incorporation of teleconference sessions, collaborative spaces and intelligent add-ons over a common secure platform. This combination allows for: (a) remote communication between health experts and the child's family, (b) efficient collaboration between the responsible doctor and healthcare professionals, (c) interfacing legacy hospital information systems to obtain health records, (d) set-up, execution and monitoring of health management plans, (e) ubiquitous access from multiple devices, (f) role-based management of the actors with respect to their actual involvement in the healthcare process, (g) confidentiality and security at all levels.
