An efficient strategy based on an artificial neural network is presented to enable a mobile robot to move autonomously and build a rough map of its environment. The paper describes a technique based on a neural network which uses data from sonars to recognize features online. Our method is systematic, simple and yields very good results. Moreover, it is generalizable in the sense that one can train the robot to recognize particular features of interest. We have implemented and tested this technique successfully on-board a mobile robot which uses a 68332 processor and does not have support for floating point arithmetic and file structure. Once trained, the robot can recognize the features on the fly and react to them appropriately.

In electronic commerce, a satisfying buyer experience is a key competitive element. We show new techniques for better adapting interaction with an electronic catalog system to actual buying behavior. Our model replaces the sequential separation of needs identification and product brokering with a conversation in which both processes occur simultaneously. This conversation supports the buyer in formulating his or her needs, and in deciding which criteria to apply in selecting a product to buy. We have experimented with this approach in the area of travel planning and developed a system called SmartClient Travel which supports this process. It includes tools for need identification, visualization of alternatives, and choosing the most suitable one. We describe the system and its implementation, and report on user studies showing its advantages for electronic catalogs. Copyright ACM 2000.

Still, control architectures for autonomous intelligentsystems have been an important research issue for an even much longer time, going as far back as James Watt’s steam engine control mechanism based on mechanical feedback. More recent work includes the development of mathematical models for control in the field of cybernetics (most notably, Wiener). We propose an adaptive regularization algorithm for smoothing dense range images using a novel, first order stabilizing function. The stabilizer we suggest is based upon minimizing the reconstructed surface area and is derived in the native, spherical coordinate system of the range scanner. This allows adjustments to be made along only the direction of measurement, thereby preventing the data overlapping problem that can arise in dense images. Adaptation is achieved by adjusting the regularization parameter according to the results of 2D edge analysis. Results indicate effective noise suppression along with well preserved edges and details in the reconstructed, 3D surfaces.

Linear repetitive processes are a distinct class of 2D linear systems of both theoretical and practical interest. The stability theory for these processes currently consists of two distinct concepts termed asymptotic stability and stability along the pass respectively where the former is a necessary condition for the latter. Recently applications have arisen where asymptotic stability is too weak and stability along the pass is too strong for meaningful progress to be made. Designing a parallel computer would be much easier if one interconnection network was for all applications and platforms. However, unfortunately, no such network exists. For a fixed application domain and fixed platform, selecting the best network can be difficult because many performance metrics and costs could be used. We discuss performance problems for interconnection networks, and describe performance metrics and performance modeling of interconnection networks from three aspects: analytical modeling, simulation modeling and empirical modeling. We also analyze the limitations and advantages of these models.

A practical algorithm for 3D interpretation of images taken in a sewer by a robot-inspector is presented. Modern sewers made of concrete present regular circular structures originating at the pipe ends as well as at the joints of the pipe sections. These pipe ends and joints provide regular marks on the sewer images and can be used for their 3D interpretation. The key idea of the paper is to extract from their image projections the 3D orientations of the circular structures and their distances relative to the robot. We adopt for this purpose a formula for the possible position of a calibrated camera on the basis of the image of a circle of known size. We describe a sequence of image processing operations that perform circle extraction, robust conic fitting and distance calculation based on original images. The reported results are preliminary in the framework of the project aimed at developing an autonomous robot for sewer inspections. We intend to use the approach to facilitate the orientation of the robot while moving in the sewer.
