This paper presents a processed phytoplankton dataset from Lake Zerendi and other Kokshetau Upland lakes, Kazakhstan. The study aimed to develop an automated method for controlling the distribution of phytoplankton in fresh open water using a gradient descent approach with the search for a starting point for research. The paper also presents the reconstructed biomass indicators for changes in water temperature, with model calibration based on results from 5 years of surface sampling. A special feature of the proposed computer data processing is the cubic spline interpolation, which allows a higher calculation accuracy. This method reduces the sample size required, providing a comprehensive picture of the condition of the infrastructure and allowing for a more efficient response to emerging ecosystem issues. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

On the Discriminability of Self-Supervised Representation Learning

Self-supervised learning (SSL) has recently achieved significant success in downstream visual tasks. However, a notable gap still exists between SSL and supervised learning (SL), especially in complex downstream tasks. In this paper, we show that the features learned by SSL methods suffer from the crowding problem, where features of different classes are not distinctly separated, and features within the same class exhibit large intra-class variance. In contrast, SL ensures a clear separation between classes. We analyze this phenomenon and conclude that SSL objectives do not constrain the relationships between different samples and their augmentations. Our theoretical analysis delves into how SSL objectives fail to enforce the necessary constraints between samples and their augmentations, leading to poor performance in complex tasks. We provide a theoretical framework showing that the performance gap between SSL and SL mainly stems from the inability of SSL methods to capture the aggregation of similar augmentations and the separation of dissimilar augmentations. To address this issue, we propose a learnable regulator called Dynamic Semantic Adjuster (DSA). DSA aggregates and separates samples in the feature space while being robust to outliers. Through extensive empirical evaluations on multiple benchmark datasets, we demonstrate the superiority of DSA in enhancing feature aggregation and separation, ultimately closing the performance gap between SSL and SL. © 2024, CC BY.

Modern managed language runtimes (e.g., Java, Go and C#) rely on garbage collection (GC) mechanisms to automatically allocate and reclaim in-memory objects. The efficiency of GC implementations can greatly impact the overall performance of runtime-based applications. To improve GC performance, the academic and industrial communities have proposed several approaches to evaluate the GC implementations in an individual runtime. However, these approaches target a specific managed language (e.g., Java), and cannot be used to compare the GC implementations in different runtimes. In this paper, we propose GEAR, an automated approach to construct consistent GC workloads for different managed language runtimes, which can further be used to evaluate GC implementations across different runtimes. Specifically, we design a group of runtime-agnostic Memory Operation Primitives (MOP), which can portray the memory usage information that influences GC. GEAR can further automatically convert a MOP program into runtime-specific programs for the target runtimes, which serve as a consistent GC workload for different runtimes. To build MOP programs with real-world GC workloads, we instrument the commonly-used runtime Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to collect the memory operation trace during a Java application's execution, and then transform the memory operation trace into a MOP program. The experimental result on three widely-used runtimes (i.e., Java, Go and C#) shows that GEAR can generate consistent GC workloads for different runtimes. We further conduct a comprehensive study on these three runtimes, and reveal some interesting findings about their GC performance, providing useful guidance for improving their GC implementations.

The challenge of interpretability remains a significant barrier to adopting deep neural networks in healthcare domains. Although tree regularization aims to align a deep neural network’s decisions with a single axis-aligned decision tree, however, relying on one tree for all inputs often leads to sub-optimal performance and interoperability. To address this limitation, we propose an enhanced tree regularization method that integrates a post-hoc visual explainable model such as Grad-CAM. This approach guides the deep model to be well-approximated by decision trees tailored to the salient regions identified by Grad-CAM in the input space. We rigorously validate the effectiveness of this framework on two cancer cell datasets: CNMC, which focuses on acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells, and ISBI2016, which comprises benign and malignant skin lesions. The results demonstrate that the proposed method delivers simpler and more interpretable explanations without compromising accuracy, thereby advancing the interpretability of deep learning models in critical healthcare applications.

Sequential Recommendation (SR) intends to model user interests based on historical behavior sequences and suggest the next item. Most existing sequential models primarily focus on learning users’ preferences on the relevance objective of the target item. However, the investigation of personalized preferences on the diversity objective of SR results is usually ignored. Evolutionary algorithms have amply demonstrated effectiveness in solving multi-objective problems but encounter efficiency bottlenecks when applied to multi-objective recommendation tasks due to the limited scalability at the user level. To address the problem, this study proposes to facilitate diversified SR via a multi-objective transfer optimization algorithm, in which each optimization task corresponds to the recommendation for a target user. With the optimization knowledge of user preference transferred within and across tasks, the diversified SR of a set of users can synchronously proceed. The novelty of our proposed algorithm is fully utilizing the outstanding global search capability of evolutionary multi-objective optimization without hindering the efficiency of sequential models.

Self-supervised learning provides an effective approach to leverage a large amount of unlabeled data. Numerous previous studies have indicated that applying self-supervision to physiological signals can yield better representations of the signals. In the paper, we aim to apply this method to the crucial field of emotion recognition. We perform the experiment with several state-of-the-art contrastive self-supervised methods to explore their effectiveness in pre-training feature encoders on raw electroencephalography (EEG) signals and fine-tuning the pre-trained encoders on the downstream emotion classification tasks. We attempt to vary the proportion of labeled data used during fine-tuning and find that the improvement from self-supervised methods is more pronounced when the proportion of labeled data is small. Additionally, we explore the transferability of the feature encoders pre-trained on various datasets and observe that most self-supervised methods exhibit a certain degree of transferability. Methods that effectively utilize the temporal information in EEG signals show superior stability, accuracy, and transferability. © 2024 IEEE.

Out-of-Bounding-Box Triggers: A Stealthy Approach to Cheat Object Detectors

In recent years, the study of adversarial robustness in object detection systems, particularly those based on deep neural networks (DNNs), has become a pivotal area of research. Traditional physical attacks targeting object detectors, such as adversarial patches and texture manipulations, directly manipulate the surface of the object. While these methods are effective, their overt manipulation of objects may draw attention in real-world applications. To address this, this paper introduces a more subtle approach: an inconspicuous adversarial trigger that operates outside the bounding boxes, rendering the object undetectable to the model. We further enhance this approach by proposing the Feature Guidance (FG) technique and the Universal Auto-PGD (UAPGD) optimization strategy for crafting high-quality triggers. The effectiveness of our method is validated through extensive empirical testing, demonstrating its high performance in both digital and physical environments. This research explores the use of Fuzzy K-Nearest Neighbor(F-KNN)and Artificial Neural Networks(ANN)for predicting heart stroke incidents,focusing on the impact of feature selection methods,specifically Chi-Square and Best First Search(BFS).The study demonstrates that BFS significantly enhances the performance of both *** BFS preprocessing,the ANN model achieved an impressive accuracy of 97.5%,precision and recall of 97.5%,and an Receiver Operating Characteristics(ROC)area of 97.9%,outperforming the Chi-Square-based ANN,which recorded an accuracy of 91.4%.Similarly,the F-KNN model with BFS achieved an accuracy of 96.3%,precision and recall of 96.3%,and a Receiver Operating Characteristics(ROC)area of 96.2%,surpassing the performance of the Chi-Square F-KNN model,which showed an accuracy of 95%.These results highlight that BFS improves the ability to select the most relevant features,contributing to more reliable and accurate stroke *** findings underscore the importance of using advanced feature selection methods like BFS to enhance the performance of machine learning models in healthcare applications,leading to better stroke risk management and improved patient outcomes.
