A moment-based pooling approach in convolutional neural networks for breast cancer histopathology image classification

Automated analysis of breast cancer (BC) histopathology images is a challenging task due to the high resolution, multiple magnifications, color variations, the presence of image artifacts, and morphological variability in the tissue images, often resulting in misdiagnosis. We propose four CNN models using a novel Zernike moments (ZMs)-based pooling approach, which replaces the existing global average pooling for the effective classification, referred to as CZP-CNN, MZP-CNN, SPMZP-CNN, and SPCZP-CNN. We utilize the ZMs-based pooling at three intermediate and last convolution layers. Of the four models, the two models, SPMZP-CNN and SPCZP-CNN, employ spatial pyramidal structures of feature maps to represent global and local characteristics of the feature maps. They effectively integrate the ZMs of various orders derived from the pyramidal representation of a feature map, representing the global and local aspects of shape and fine morphological details. The ability of ZMs is fully utilized to capture shape and morphological information available in the feature map using only a few low-order moments, which adds to the robustness of the proposed approach. Detailed experimental results on the publicly available BreaKHis dataset with four magnification levels and on the high-resolution BACH dataset demonstrate the proposed models’ effectiveness, robustness, and generalization ability. Among these proposed models, the complex ZMs-based SPCZP-CNN model achieves an impressive mean classification accuracy of 94.16% on the BreaKHis dataset and overall best binary and multiclass classification accuracy of 96.25% and 93.75% on the BACH dataset. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

HandRT: Simultaneous Hand Shape and Appearance Reconstruction with Pose Tracking from Monocular RGB-D Video

We propose a method to reconstruct a personalized hand avatar, representing the user's hand shape and appearance, from a monocular RGB-D video of a hand performing unknown hand poses under unknown illumination. Our method, HandRT, jointly optimizes hand pose, shape, appearance, and lighting parameters using a physically-based shading model in a differentiable rendering framework incorporating Monte Carlo path tracing. HandRT extends our previous work, Intrinsic Hand Avatar, by relaxing the assumption of a known coarse hand pose and utilizing depth data in the optimization. Specifically, we introduce an articulated registration energy based on iterative closest point over the depth point cloud that enables reconstruction from unknown hand poses via tracking across frames. Thus, we can reconstruct the avatar from arbitrary poses with high accuracy without relying on an off-the-shelf 2D joint detector at each frame. Further, HandRT is capable of precisely tracking the reconstructed avatar from either RGB or RGB-D input. Our evaluation demonstrates that our method outperforms existing hand avatar reconstruction methods on all commonly used metrics while producing significantly accurate mesh compared to state-of-the-art hand mesh recovery methods by a large margin on public and our captured datasets. In this digital era, users frequently share their thoughts, preferences, and ideas through social media, which reflect their Basic Human Values. Basic Human Values (aka values) are the fundamental aspects of human behavior, which define what we consider important, and worth having and pursue them. Existing studies identify the values of individuals from different social network usages such as Facebook and Reddit. However, discovering the similarity (or diversity) of value priorities among the members in a group is important since we can reveal many interesting insights such as finding a set of target customers, identifying the chain of misdeed groups, searching for similar acquaintances in workplaces, etc. In this paper, a graph dataset is compiled using the strongest correlation among the features and then we apply a graph clustering technique to identify a suitable hedonist group (i.e., one dimension of values) for users’ recommendations. Then, we also propose a behavior based (i.e., value) group recommendation technique by analyzing users’ contextual and psychological attributes. Finally, we validate those group members in real life by introducing two hypotheses. In particular, we analyze the tweets of a total of 1140 users collected from Twitter. We obtain a substantial intra-cluster correlation coefficient (ICC) and silhouette clustering coefficient (SCC) scores of 65% and 76%, respectively, among the members in our discovered group. © The Author(s) 2024.

OSSIoT: An ontology-based Operational Security model for Social Internet of Things using Machine Learning Techniques

The Social Internet of Things (SIoT) is an innovative fusion of IoT and smart devices that enable them to establish dynamic relationships. Securing sensitive data in a smart environment requires a model to determine the relationships between devices through object profiling and ontological models. To address this need, we have proposed an ontology-based operational security model for the SIoT. In our approach, the interpolation method is used to establish relationships, while fiduciary relationships are employed to detect threats. Furthermore, the encryption of heterogeneous device data, coupled with the implementation of an operation-based intrusion detection system, proves highly effective in identifying potential *** relationships are identified as intruders and validated using machine learning techniques. Encrypting heterogeneous device data, along with an operation-based intrusion detection system, efficiently identifies threats in the ever-evolving dynamic nature of the SIoT environment. the encryption of heterogeneous device data, coupled with an operation-based intrusion detection system, effectively identifies threats. Invalid relationships are promptly identified as attackers and machine learning techniques are used to validate relationships encryption and machine learning stand as indispensable tools in the endeavor to secure sensitive information within the realm of the SIoT. The suggested model outperformed the results of the current model, as evidenced by its average accuracy of 85.67%, precision of 90.37%, recall of 92.06%, and F1-score of 91.03% when compared to the existing model. © (2024), (International Association of Engineers). MTUNet + + : explainable few-shot medical image classification with generative adversarial network

Medical imaging, a cornerstone of disease diagnosis and treatment planning, faces the hurdles of subjective interpretation and reliance on specialized expertise. Deep learning algorithms show improvements in automating medical image analysis, reducing radiologists' burden, and potentially enhancing patient outcomes. However, these algorithms require substantial quantities of high-quality labelled data for effective training and refinement. This paper proposes an innovative approach that harnesses few-shot learning (FSL) and generative adversarial networks (GANs) to overcome conventional methods' limitations in medical image classification. FSL, capable of learning from limited labelled examples, holds promise for scenarios where labelled data is scarce. However, the lack of interpretability in existing FSL models impedes their clinical adoption. To tackle this, this paper proposes a explainable FSL network, "MTUNet + +," which integrates an attention mechanism to emphasize relevant regions in medical images. Furthermore, integrating a generative adversarial network, enhances the performance of MTUNet + + by generating synthetic medical images. Systematically eliminating misleading synthetic images improves the reliability and accuracy of medical image classification. Empirical evaluation on benchmark datasets underscores the effectiveness of the approach, achieving 85.19% and 69.28% accuracy for the HAM10000 and Kvasir datasets, respectively. This paper contributes to advancing AI-driven solutions in clinical practice, facilitating enhanced patient care and streamlined workflows within real-world healthcare settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Emotion mining for early suicidal threat detection on both social media and suicide notes using context dynamic masking-based transformer with deep learning

Suicide represents a poignant societal issue deeply entwined with mental well-being. While existing research primarily focuses on identifying suicide-related texts, there is a gap in the advanced detection of mental health states leading to suicidal tendencies. The purpose is to recognize the emotions influencing individuals’ mental states, potentially leading to suicidal behavior. This study seeks to identify specific emotions like anger, depression, anxiety, guilt, fear, stress, and sadness within suicide-related texts sourced from both social media and suicide notes. We introduce a novel suicide severity assessment method emphasizing emotion detection across categories like suicidal ideation, suicide planning, attempted, committed, suicide notes, describing, and cannot dare. By identifying high-intensity negative emotions, our approach enables early detection of potential suicide threats. Existing studies often struggle to capture nuances and semantic relationships, particularly in suicide-related contexts. To address this, we propose a context dynamic masking based on bidirectional long short-term memory along with a multi-head self-attention and convolutional neural network (CoDyn-BMHSA-CNN) model, capturing bidirectional contexts and maintaining variable-length sequences. Our model achieves accuracies of 98.2% and 97.4%, with F1 scores of 95.5% and 93.8% for social media and suicide note datasets, respectively. We perform ablation tests to pinpoint the key components of our proposed models. Furthermore, a thorough comparative analysis evaluates the model’s performance across various contexts and platforms. Experimental results illustrate the superior effectiveness of our model in identifying emotions from text sequences compared to state-of-the-art approaches. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Data race is one of the most important concurrent anomalies in multi-threaded *** con-straint-based techniques are leveraged into race detection,which is able to find all the races that can be found by any oth-er sound race ***,this constraint-based approach has serious limitations on helping programmers analyze and understand data ***,it may report a large number of false positives due to the unrecognized dataflow propa-gation of the ***,it recommends a wide range of thread context switches to schedule the reported race(in-cluding the false one)whenever this race is exposed during the constraint-solving *** ad hoc recommendation imposes too many context switches,which complicates the data race *** address these two limitations in the state-of-the-art constraint-based race detection,this paper proposes DFTracker,an improved constraint-based race detec-tor to recommend each data race with minimal thread context ***,we reduce the false positives by ana-lyzing and tracking the dataflow in the *** this means,DFTracker thus reduces the unnecessary analysis of false race *** further propose a novel algorithm to recommend an effective race schedule with minimal thread con-text switches for each data *** experimental results on the real applications demonstrate that 1)without removing any true data race,DFTracker effectively prunes false positives by 68%in comparison with the state-of-the-art constraint-based race detector;2)DFTracker recommends as low as 2.6-8.3(4.7 on average)thread context switches per data race in the real world,which is 81.6%fewer context switches per data race than the state-of-the-art constraint based race ***,DFTracker can be used as an effective tool to understand the data race for programmers.

Modified Bat Algorithm: a newly proposed approach for solving complex and real-world problems

Bat Algorithm (BA) is a nature-inspired metaheuristic search algorithm designed to efficiently explore complex problem spaces and find near-optimal solutions. The algorithm is inspired by the echolocation behavior of bats, which acts as a signal system to estimate the distance and hunt prey. Although the BA has proven effective for various optimization problems, it exhibits limited exploration ability and susceptibility to local optima. The algorithm updates velocities and positions based on the current global best solution, causing all agents to converge toward a specific location, potentially leading to local optima issues in optimization problems. On this premise, this paper proposes the Modified Bat Algorithm (MBA) as an enhancement to address the local optima limitation observed in the original BA. MBA incorporates the frequency and velocity of the current best solution, enhancing convergence speed to the optimal solution and preventing local optima entrapment. While the original BA faces diversity issues, both the original BA and MBA are introduced. To assess MBA’s performance, three sets of test functions (classical benchmark functions, CEC2005, and CEC2019) are employed, with results compared to those of the original BA, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Dragonfly Algorithm (DA). The outcomes demonstrate the MBA’s significant superiority over other algorithms. In addition, MBA successfully addresses a real-world assignment problem (call center problem), traditionally solved using linear programming methods, with satisfactory results. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.
