Profiling tools are indispensable for performance optimization of parallel codes. They allow users to understand where a code spends its time, and to focus optimization efforts on the most time consuming regions. However, two sources of complexity make them difficult to use on large-scale parallel applications. First, the code complexity of parallel applications is increasingly, and identifying the problematic regions in the code is difficult. Traditional profilers show either a flat view or a calling context tree view. Second, most tools average performance data across processes, losing per-process behavior. Diagnosing problems like load imbalance requires profiles from many processes, and manually analyzing profiles from hundreds or thousands of processes is infeasible. We introduce VIPACT, a visualization tool to identify different behaviors in multiple processes. VIPACT introduces “halo nodes” that concisely encode the distributions of runtimes from all processes, and a hybrid tree view that combines the advantages of calling context trees with those of flat profiles. We combine these with approaches such as ring charts, as well as the filtering and subselection of nodes, and we apply these techniques to a production multi-physics code.

This paper presents results of a simulation of electrical circuits for microwave oscillators conducted within the `Microwave Office' RF design software suite. The purpose of the simulation and optimization is to minimize the phase noise of a millimetre wave frequency synthesizer and to find optimal designs for reference oscillators and voltage controlled oscillator circuits. The effects of incorporating bipolar and field-effect transistor circuits on the phase noise, various circuits supplying bias voltage to the base and gate of the transistor, methods of incorporating quartz crystals and frequency tuning methods of voltage controlled oscillator circuits have been studied. The low phase noise reference oscillator and millimetre wave voltage controlled oscillator circuits are presented in this article.

The complexity of critical systems such as traffic management has dramatically increased over the last decades, since they involve more and more sensors to derive distributed situational awareness. Most existing systems require an a-priori configuration of sensors or need human intervention to adapt to changes. Furthermore, analysis of data quality or query plan reliability is often not possible and management of recorded data is done by hand. Our goal is to support the research, development, evaluation and demonstration of such systems. Within this study we analyze requirements and challenges for the data management of sensor based research environments and present a data stream based architecture which fulfills these requirements. © 2016 IEEE.

The KM3NeT Collaboration is building and operating two deep sea neutrino telescopes at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. The telescopes consist of latices of photomultiplier tubes housed in pressure-resistant glass spheres, called digital optical modules and arranged in vertical detection units. The two main scientific goals are the determination of the neutrino mass ordering and the discovery and observation of high-energy neutrino sources in the Universe. Neutrinos are detected via the Cherenkov light, which is induced by charged particles originated in neutrino interactions. The photomultiplier tubes convert the Cherenkov light into electrical signals that are acquired and timestamped by the acquisition electronics. Each optical module houses the acquisition electronics for collecting and timestamping the photomultiplier signals with one nanosecond accuracy. Once finished, the two telescopes will have installed more than six thousand optical acquisition nodes, completing one of the more complex networks in the world in terms of operation and synchronization. The embedded software running in the acquisition nodes has been designed to provide a framework that will operate with different hardware versions and functionalities. The hardware will not be accessible once in operation, which complicates the embedded software architecture. The embedded software provides a set of tools to facilitate remote manageability of the deployed hardware, including safe reconfiguration of the firmware. The Cherenkov Telescope Array and the KM3NeT neutrino telescopes are major upcoming facilities in the fields of γ-ray and neutrino astronomy, respectively. Possible simultaneous production of γ rays and neutrinos in astrophysical accelerators of cosmic-ray nuclei motivates a combination of their data. We assess the potential of a combined analysis of CTA and KM3NeT data to determine the contribution of hadronic emission processes in known Galactic γ-ray emitters, comparing this result to the cases of two separate analyses. In doing so, we demonstrate the capability of GAMMAPY, an open-source software package for the analysis of γ-ray data, to also process data from neutrino telescopes. For a selection of prototypical γ-ray sources within our Galaxy, we obtain models for primary proton and electron spectra in the hadronic and leptonic emission scenario, respectively, by fitting published γ-ray spectra. Using these models and instrument response functions for both detectors, we employ the GAMMAPY package to generate pseudo data sets, where we assume 200 hours of CTA observations and 10 years of KM3NeT detector operation. We then apply a three-dimensional binned likelihood analysis to these data sets, separately for each instrument and jointly for both. We find that the largest benefit of the combined analysis lies in the possibility of a consistent modelling of the γ-ray and neutrino emission. Assuming a purely leptonic scenario as input, we obtain, for the most favourable source, an average expected 68% credible interval that constrains the contribution of hadronic processes to the observed γ-ray emission to below 15%. © 2023, CC BY.

Can near-term gate model based quantum processors offer quantum advantage for practical applications in the pre-fault tolerance noise regime? A class of algorithms which have shown some promise in this regard are the so-called classical-quantum hybrid variational algorithms. Here we develop a low-depth quantum algorithm to generative neural networks using variational quantum circuits. We introduce a method which employs the quantum approximate optimization algorithm as a subroutine in order produce then sample low-energy distributions of Ising Hamiltonians. We sample these states to train neural networks and demonstrate training convergence for numerically simulated noisy circuits with depolarizing errors of rates of up to 4%. In P2P video streaming systems, the neighbor selection algorithm is one of the fundamental components that affects performance. Although a few neighbor selection methodologies have been proposed, none of them takes into consideration QoE metrics reported by peers as a parameter for decisions. In this work, we present a new metric that quantifies the QoE as a function of the number of absences of pieces of a video during playback, referred to as stress level. A peer is stable if its stress level remains constant over a certain interval of time. Then, we propose a new neighbor selection algorithm for P2P streaming. The algorithm promotes exchanges of lists of stable peers, in order to get shorter download times and minimum interruption during video playback. The performance results show that our proposal is competitive against other state-of-the-art algorithms, reducing the number of absences of video pieces during playback by at least 19% and the average stress level by up to 32%.

In this article it is presented an FPGA based Multi-Voltage Threshold (MVT) system which allows of sampling fast signals (1 − 2 ns rising and falling edge) in both voltage and time domain. It is possible to achieve a precision of time measurement of 20 ps RMS and reconstruct charge of signals, using a simple approach, with deviation from real value smaller than 10%. Utilization of the differential inputs of an FPGA chip as comparators together with an implementation of a TDC inside an FPGA allowed us to achieve a compact multi-channel system characterized by low power consumption and low production costs. This paper describes realization and functioning of the system comprising 192-channel TDC board and a four mezzanine cards which split incoming signals and discriminate them. The boards have been used to validate a newly developed Time-of-Flight Positron Emission Tomography system based on plastic scintillators. The achieved full system time resolution of σ(TOF) ≈ 68 ps is by factor of two better with respect to the current TOF-PET systems. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

High blood pressure is a highly heritable and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. We report the largest genetic association study of blood pressure traits (systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure) to date in over 1 million people of European ancestry. We identify 535 novel blood pressure loci that not only offer new biological insights into blood pressure regulation but also highlight shared genetic architecture between blood pressure and lifestyle exposures. Our findings identify new biological pathways for blood pressure regulation with potential for improved cardiovascular disease prevention in the future.
