In this paper, we show that for arbitrary stochastic linear dynamical systems, the problem of optimizing parameters of a feedback control policy can be cast as a convex optimization problem when a risk-averse objective (similar to LEQG) is used. The only restriction is a condition relating the control cost, risk factor and noise in the system. The resulting approach allows us to synthesize risk-averse controllers efficiently for finite horizon problems. For the standard quadratic costs in infinite horizon, the resulting problems become degenerate if the uncontrolled system is unstable. As an alternative, we propose using a discount-based approach that ensures that costs do not blow up. We show that the discount factor can effectively be used as a homotopy parameter to gradually synthesize stabilizing controllers for unstable systems. We also propose extensions where non-quadratic costs can be used for controller synthesis, and in this case, as long as the costs are bounded, the optimization problems are well-posed and have non-trivial solutions.

Amultimedia surveillance system has to sustain high computational loads. Such a system needs to intelligently learn the characteristics of the workload that it is going to handle. The knowledge of the workload also provides a strong basis for design and optimization of the system components. To efficiently use this knowledge, we need an analytical model of the workload. The traditional multimedia workload models used in other domains are not appropriate for surveillance systems. In other domains, the workload characteristics are mainly derived from the statistical properties of the data,whereas in the case of surveillance, the semantics play a dominant role in determining the processing needs. In this chapter, we discuss popular workload models from other domains and explore their applicability to surveillance systems. We find that none of those models describe the workload accurately in surveillance context. Following this observation, we propose a novel Markov chain based formal model of multimedia workload for surveillance systems. Different states of the Markov chainmeticulously capture the variability of the workload. Themodel is validated with real surveillance data. Subsequently, we describe performance analysis of a real surveillance system based on the proposed model. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

The problem of automatically marking the interior and exterior regions of a simple curve in a digital image becomes a hard task due to the noise and the intrinsic difficulties of the media where the image is taken. In this paper, we propose a definition of the interior of a partially bounded region and present a bio-inspired algorithm for finding it in the framework of Membrane computing. © Springer India 2014.

In this paper we present the use of participatory design in a public health management system, called PRONTO, that is being developed in Brazil. This system involves a partnership between the city hall and the University of Blumenau and it is being developed by the Development Laboratory and Transfer of Technology. The project involves a health network with 64 units of family health, 8 ambulatories and 1 polyclinic. The paper describes the experience in the project phase of the Multidisciplinary Treatment System module and presents the obtained results.

We describe a solution for fast indexing and searching within large heterogeneous data sets whose main purpose is to support investigators that need to analyze forensic disk images originated by seizures or created from bodies of evidence. Our approach is based on a combination of techniques aimed at improving efficiency and reliability of the indexing *** do not rely on existing frameworks like Hadoop but borrow concepts from different contexts including High Performance computing and Database management.

The advances of electronics provide options for improved monitoring of patients in clinical environment. Medical applications like blood pressure monitoring require precise and wireless altitude measurement in indoor environment. An error of more than a few centimeters bears a risk of mistreatment of patients. Furthermore, user requirements like small form factor, usability and robust operation are important in the medical field. Existing evaluations of indoor positioning systems focus on accuracy analysis of x- and y-coordinates, not on the z-coordinate (altitude). In this paper, we define evaluation criteria for altitude estimation in medical applications. We compare an Ultra-Wide-Band indoor positioning system, an optical Microsoft Kinect camera system and our own development of a wireless barometric sensor against these criteria. We present a comparative measurement setup, results and a final evaluation of the three systems in an indoor environment.

A novel derivative-free algorithm for solving quasilinear systems is presented. It resembles "classical" optimization approach but greatly simplifies computation, resulting in fast execution and numerical stability. Though the global convergence cannot be guaranteed, it turns out that the presented algorithm finds a solution as successfully as other commonly accepted methods. The algorithm is clearly developed and mathematically founded, and its properties are examined by comparisons with other methods.

This paper presents a study of and triboson production using events from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb . The production cross-section is determined using a final state containing an electron, a muon, a photon, and neutrinos ( ). Upper limits on the production cross-section of the final state and the and final states containing an electron or a muon, two jets, a photon, and a neutrino ( or ) are also derived. The results are compared to the cross-sections predicted by the Standard Model at next-to-leading order in the strong-coupling constant. In addition, upper limits on the production cross-sections are derived in a fiducial region optimised for a search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in the context of anomalous quartic gauge couplings using an effective field theory. Confidence intervals at 95% confidence level are derived for the 14 coupling coefficients to which and production are sensitive.

The United States, including the department of Defense, relies heavily on information systems and networking technologies to efficiently conduct a wide variety of missions across the globe. With the ever-increasing rate of cyber attacks, this dependency places the nation at risk of a loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of its critical information resources; degrading its ability to complete the mission. In this paper, we introduce the operational data classes for establishing situational awareness in cyberspace. A system effectively using our key information components will be able to provide the nation's leadership timely and accurate information to gain an understanding of the operational cyber environment to enable strategic, operational, and tactical decision-making. In doing so, we present, define and provide examples of our key classes of operational data for cyber situational awareness and present a hypothetical case study demonstrating how they must be consolidated to provide a clear and relevant picture to a commander. In addition, current organizational and technical challenges are discussed, and areas for future research are addressed.

Digital road maps have gained fundamental role in population's daily life, so they need to be accurate and up-to-date. A viable solution is to generate maps by processing GPS data. However, one of the most challenging tasks regarding this approach is how to extract road centerlines from the cloud of georeferenced GPS points. The literature presents various methods that do it, but none have been found that is prepared for the continuous update of the map and refinement of its roads' accuracy. In this context, the objective of this work is to propose a method to identify road centerlines using an evolutive algorithm in order to generate and update road maps. This work uses as source of data GPS traces collected by smartphones. Although suitable to obtain a large amount of georeferenced data, these devices bring the additional problem of identifying the transport vehicle used along each trace. Preliminary results indicate that the method's performance is satisfactory, with an average variation of 2.95 meters in relation to satellite images.
