This paper presents the object-oriented platform-based design process for embedded real-time systems (SEEP). More specifically, it includes a case study to highlight the main design steps proposed by SEEP. Details regarding embedded system modeling and its transition to the programming level are presented. Moreover, it describes the embedded system generation and provides data obtained from the hardware synthesis and the application execution. Moreover, it discusses how projects can be optimized according to requirements priorities. It finishes by highlighting the main advantage of SEEP in comparison to other existing methodologies for embedded systems design

This paper is concerned with the adaptive slidingmode control of a class of nonlinear systems in nonlinear parametric-pure-feedback form with mismatched uncertainties. Backstepping design procedure is applied, which leads to a new adaptive sliding-mode control. Gaussian radial-basis-function networks are used to approximate the unknown system dynamics. A new growing scheme of the Gaussian networks is proposed. The networks start with a loose structure in order to reduce the computational effort. More nodes are added to the networks progressively in order to improve the transient behaviour. With ideal sliding mode, asymptotic stability is reached. The performance of the control scheme is illustrated by simulation studies.

Internet congestion control system is considered as a closed-loop feedback system with time-delay. A proportional-integral-differential (PID) controller is then established as active queue management (AQM) scheme to adjust the congestion marked possibility at the links in Internet, whose parameters is auto-tuned by applying the minimization of an integral criterion for adapting the change of the network system. The simulations show that the new AQM scheme can control the size of the queue in the buffer to an expected length and has the robustness for the loading perturbation and the parameter change in the network.

In this paper, we aim at developing a System-on-Chip, SoC, which can capture image as well as produce vehicle lane map at the same time. We adopt Peak-Finding based lane detection algorithm that can achieve high recognition rate about 96% even under various weather conditions. The features of the proposed SoC are a single low-cost and compact chip which implements the lane detection algorithm with mixed signal mode CMOS image sensor. Therefore, it can be easily used in thousands of consumer electronics for intelligent automobile applications. © IEEE.

Novel contour extraction algorithm for a moving target based on image fusion

A contour extraction algorithm for a moving target is proposed. This algorithm consists of three steps. Firstly, motion segmentation is applied respectively to infrared and visible image sequences to get an initial contour of a moving target. Secondly, a dynamic contour is applied to make the initial contour converge to the target's contour. Finally, two novel image fusions are applied. The first fusion minimizes L2 norm's square of the difference of control point vectors in two modal images without image registration. The second fusion is realized by the modified differential coupling with image registration. Contrasting detection experiments indicate the second fusion is better. Meanwhile, a fast iteration algorithm of dynamic contour based on the Newmark method is devised. A contrasting experiment indicates its iteration time for stable convergence decreases by 21.01% compared with the Wilson-θ method.

The goal of this work is to develop a robot-assisted surgery system for spinal fusion, which is composed of a robot, a surgical planning system, and an optical tracking system. The system plays roles of assisting surgeon for inserting a pedicle screw in spinal fusion. Compared to pure navigation systems as well as conventional methods for spinal fusion, it is able to achieve better accuracy through compensating for the portending movement of the surgical area. Furthermore, the robot can position and guide needles, drills, and other surgical instruments or conducts drilling/screwing directly. In preoperative surgery, the desired entry point, orientation, and depth of surgical tools for pedicle screw insertion are determined by the surgical planning system based on CT or MR images. Intra-operatively, the position information on the surgical instruments and the targeted surgical areas are obtained by the tracking system and, using that information, a robot conducts the preplanned operation depending on its role while compensating the movement of the surgical area. Two exemplary experiments employing the developed robot-assisted surgery system are conducted. © 2005 IEEE.

The growing complexity of today's embedded real-time systems demands new methods and tools in order to manage the problems of design, analysis, integration and validation of complex systems. This paper describes an object-oriented platform-based design process for real-time embedded systems. The proposed approach promotes a smooth transition from high-level UML specification to implementation, which is composed by hardware and software components. The transition from higher to lower abstraction levels is facilitated by the use of an OO realtime API, whose underlying facilities can be optimized according to the application needs and selected platform. An integrated toolset is used to support the intermediate steps of the design process. In order to illustrate the proposed approach and related toolset the design of an embedded real-time automation system for an "intelligent" wheelchair is presented.

This paper discusses a design flow for multithread object-oriented real-time applications, running on top of an embedded, platform-based, customizable Java processor, which is prototyped using affordable FPGAs. The proposed approach enforces design space exploration activities, taking into account aspects like temporal behavior, memory footprint, and power/energy consumption. A case study containing a task scheduler implementation as both software and hardware modules is presented. While both implementations are compatible with the developed program from an interface point of view, they lead to different timing and footprint requirements. Their evaluation in terms of memory occupation and number of FPGA logic cells is presented.

A systematic methodology for generating multi-folded torus chaotic attractors from a simple three-dimensional piecewise-linear system is presented in this paper. Theoretical analysis shows that multi-folded torus chaotic attractors can be created via alternative switching between two piecewise-linear systems. A novel circuit diagram is designed for physically creating multi-folded torus chaotic attractors. This is the first time in the literature to experimentally verify a maximum 9-folded torus chaotic attractor that is generated by an analog circuit.

The global and local stability of process systems in generalized Lotka-Volterra form is studied in this paper using entropy-like and quadratic Lyapunov function candidates. The global stability check for LV models is performed by solving an LMI for a diagonal positive semi-definite matrix using singular perturbation technique. It is shown that a quadratic Lyapunov function can also be determined by solving linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). In addition, the quadratic stability neighborhood is convex in the space of the quasi-monomials and can be estimated by computing its comer points using LMIs. Furthermore, it is proved that quadratic stability with a diagonal weighting matrix enables to construct adissipative-Hamiltonian description of the system. The developed methods are illustrated on the model of a continuously stirred tank reactor with a nonlinear reaction system. Copyright © 2004 IFAC.
