Beyond identifying genetic variants, we introduce a set of Boolean relations that allows for a comprehensive classification of the relations for every pair of variants by taking all minimal alignments into account. We present an efficient algorithm to compute these relations, including a novel way of efficiently computing all minimal alignments within the best theoretical complexity bounds. We show that for variants of the CFTR gene in dbSNP these relations are common and many non-trivial. Ultimately, we present an approach for the storing and indexing of variants in the context of a database that enables efficient querying for all these relations. © 2021, CC BY.

To provide beneficial feedback to students during their collaboration, it is important to identify behaviors that are indicative of good collaboration. However, in a collaborative learning session, students engage in a range of behaviors and it can be difficult to indicate which of those behaviors correlate with higher outcomes. In this paper, we propose using Extreme Value Theory (EVT), a method that considers the data points in the tail (upper or lower) of the distribution, to analyse the relationship between collaborative process variables and outcome measures through insights derived from high impact, low-frequency events. Specifically, in this paper, we analyse the relationship between dual gaze patterns and outcome measures across two different datasets. In both datasets we found that students with lower outcomes had lower focus during the collaborative session. This paper provides a contribution by both introducing EVT as a viable method for analysing CSCL data as well as demonstrating the effectiveness of eyetracking as a collaborative indicator to use to adapt to in real-time. © ISLS.

BISECT: Learning to split and rephrase sentences with bitexts

An important task in NLP applications such as sentence simplification is the ability to take a long, complex sentence and split it into shorter sentences, rephrasing as necessary. We introduce a novel dataset and a new model for this 'split and rephrase' task. Our BISECT training data consists of 1 million long English sentences paired with shorter, meaning-equivalent English sentences. We obtain these by extracting 1-2 sentence alignments in bilingual parallel corpora and then using machine translation to convert both sides of the corpus into the same language. BISECT contains higher quality training examples than previous Split and Rephrase corpora, with sentence splits that require more significant modifications. We categorize examples in our corpus, and use these categories in a novel model that allows us to target specific regions of the input sentence to be split and edited. Moreover, we show that models trained on BISECT can perform a wider variety of split operations and improve upon previous state-of-the-art approaches in automatic and human evaluations. © 2021, CC BY.

As a basic and indispensable module, LiDAR odom-etry estimation is widely used in robotics. In recent years, learning-based modeling approaches for odometry estimation have been validated to be feasible. However, it is necessary to consider security factors as the highest priorities when we apply the learning-based model to certain high-risk real-world scenarios, such as autonomous driving. The odometry uncertainty estimation provides more valuable information for downstream tasks, such as route planning and navigation. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end neural network (namely CertainOdom) to solve odometry and uncertainty estimation tasks by applying multi-task learning. Instead of using the manually-tuned hyper-parameters, we employ the learnable uncertainties to weigh the balance between the error of translation and orientation in the loss function. We evaluate the estimated trajectory and uncertainty on KITTI dataset. We also compare the robustness against the traditional geometry-based methods on our artificially degraded KITTI LiDAR dataset. Extensive experimental results show that our model with uncertainty weighted loss achieves competitive performance in LiDAR odometry estimation. We also explain our uncertainties qualitatively and quantitatively.

Trained and optimized for typical and fluent speech, speech AI works poorly for people with speech diversities, often interrupting them and misinterpreting their speech. The increasing deployment of speech AI in automated phone menus, AI-conducted job interviews, and everyday devices poses tangible risks to people with speech diversities. To mitigate these risks, this workshop aims to build a multidisciplinary coalition and set the research agenda for fair and accessible speech AI. Bringing together a broad group of academics and practitioners with diverse perspectives, including HCI, AI, and other relevant fields such as disability studies, speech language pathology, and law, this workshop will establish a shared understanding of the technical challenges for fair and accessible speech AI, as well as its ramifications in design, user experience, policy, and society. In addition, the workshop will invite and highlight first-person accounts from people with speech diversities, facilitating direct dialogues and collaboration between speech AI developers and the impacted communities. The key outcomes of this workshop include a summary paper that synthesizes our learnings and outlines the roadmap for improving speech AI for people with speech diversities, as well as a community of scholars, practitioners, activists, and policy makers interested in driving progress in this domain. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Due to the progress of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), this new technology is widely applied in military and civilian areas. Multi-UAV networks are often known as flying ad hoc networks (FANETs). Due to these applications, FANET must ensure communication stability and have high scalability. These goals are achieved by presenting clustering techniques in FANETs. However, the characteristics of these networks, like high-mobility nodes, limited energy, and dynamic topology, have created great challenges in two important processes of clustering protocols, namely cluster construction and the selection of cluster heads. In this paper, an intelligent clustering scheme based on the whale optimization algorithm called ICW is suggested in flying ad hoc networks. Firstly, each UAV specifies its hello interval based on the lifespan of adjacent links to guarantee the adaptability of ICW to FANET. Then, a centralized clustering process is done using a whale optimization algorithm (WOA) to find the best cluster centers on the network. To determine the membership of each UAV in a cluster, ICW employs a new criterion, i.e. closeness ratio, so that each UAV joins a cluster with the best closeness ratio. In addition, the evaluation of each whale is carried out based on a fitness function, consisting of three components, namely the number of isolated clusters, the ratio of inter-cluster distance to intra-cluster distance, and cluster size. Then, a cluster head is selected for each cluster based on a score value. This score is dependent on the weighted sum of four metrics, namely remaining energy, the average link lifespan between each UAV and its neighbors, neighbor degree, and the average distance between each UAV and its neighbors. In the last step, two routing processes, namely intra-cluster routing and inter-cluster routing, are introduced in FANET. Deep Learning has been successfully applied in diverse fields, and its impact on deepfake detection is no exception. Deepfakes are fake yet realistic synthetic content that can be used deceitfully for political impersonation, phishing, slandering, or spreading misinformation. Despite extensive research on unimodal deepfake detection, identifying complex deepfakes through joint analysis of audio and visual streams remains relatively unexplored. To fill this gap, this survey first provides an overview of audiovisual deepfake generation techniques, applications, and their consequences, and then provides a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art methods that combine audio and visual modalities to enhance detection accuracy, summarizing and critically analyzing their strengths and limitations. Furthermore, we discuss existing open source datasets for a deeper understanding, which can contribute to the research community and provide necessary information to beginners who want to analyze deep learning-based audiovisual methods for video forensics. By bridging the gap between unimodal and multimodal approaches, this paper aims to improve the effectiveness of deepfake detection strategies and guide future research in cybersecurity and media integrity. © 2024, CC BY.

How can societies learn to enforce and comply with social norms? Many if not most human norms are functional. Rules that punish non-cooperative behavior, for example, support cooperation. An intriguing feature of human normativity is that many social norms concern behaviors that have no direct impact on material well-being. Examples include rules about what color clothing one wears to a funeral [7] or whether one uses one's left or right hand in particular tasks [2]. Such apparently pointless rules are ubiquitous, often acquiring great social meaning despite the absence of functionality. Hadfield-Menell et al. (2019) call these norms "silly rules" and distinguish them from "important rules," such as rules that govern resource sharing or prohibit harmful conduct, that directly impact welfare [3]. © 2020 International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (IFAAMAS). The emergence of contemporary deepfakes has attracted significant attention in machine learning research, as artificial intelligence (AI) generated synthetic media increases the incidence of misinterpretation and is difficult to distinguish from genuine content. Currently, machine learning techniques have been extensively studied for automatically detecting deepfakes. However, human perception has been less explored. Malicious deepfakes could ultimately cause public and social problems. Can we humans correctly perceive the authenticity of the content of the videos we watch? The answer is obviously uncertain;therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the human ability to discern deepfake videos through a subjective study. We present our findings by comparing human observers to five state-of-the-art deepfake detection models. To this end, we used gamification concepts to provide 110 participants (55 native English speakers and 55 non-native English speakers) with a web-based platform where they could access a series of 40 videos (20 real and 20 fake) to determine their authenticity. Each participant performed the experiment twice with the same 40 videos in different random orders. The videos are manually selected from the FakeAVCeleb dataset. We found that all AI models performed significantly better than humans when evaluated on the same 40 videos. The study also reveals that while deception is not impossible, humans tend to overestimate their detection capabilities. Our experimental results may help benchmark human versus machine performance, advance forensics analysis, and enable adaptive countermeasures. © 2024, CC BY.

Background: Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder. The recommended treatment is cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBTi). A sleep diary is a core tool in CBTi. We have developed a digital sleep diary with a standardised feedback function. Aim: To study feasibility of the digital sleep diary in participants of the Akershus Sleep Apnea (ASAP) cohorts with difficulties falling asleep or maintaining sleep. To describe sleep diary engagement and explore experiences with the digital sleep diary with potential influences in insomnia symptom management. Material and methods: Twenty participants were recruited from the ASAP. All filled out a digital sleep diary up to 12 weeks. Treatment options provided were a self-help book (N = 11) or electroencephalography neurofeedback (N = 9) in addition to the sleep diary standardised feedback function. We collected quantitative data from the sleep diary reports and we sub-divided insomnia by sleep onset insomnia and non-sleep onset insomnia. Finally, we performed qualitative interviews. Results: The median number of entries to the sleep diary was 81 (25th quartile: 26, 75th quartile 84). In the qualitative analysis, we identified two main themes;“structure and overview” and “usability and digital features”. Conclusion: The sleep diary was found to be feasible when distributed in combination with a self-help book or electroencephalography neurofeedback. The qualitative results emphasised the importance of a timely graphical overview and visualisations of self-recorded sleep. © 2023 The Authors
