In recent years, we have seen an influx in reliance on AI assistants for information seeking. Given this widespread use and the known challenges AI poses for Black users, recent efforts have emerged to identify key considerations needed to provide meaningful support. One notable effort is the development of ChatBlackGPT, a culturally informed AI assistant designed to provide culturally relevant responses. Despite the existence of ChatBlackGPT, there is no research on when and how Black communities might engage with culturally informed AI assistants and the distinctions between engagement with general purpose tools like ChatGPT. To fill this gap, we propose a research agenda grounded in results from a preliminary comparative analysis of outputs provided by ChatGPT and ChatBlackGPT for travel-related inquiries. Our efforts thus far emphasize the need to consider Black communities’ values, perceptions, and experiences when designing AI assistants that acknowledge the Black lived experience. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

human bodies are deeply political as they carry historical and social meanings, including race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, class, and abilities. The expanding body-centric research in HCI can be traced in the plurality of methods, theories and domains that take bodies as a central point of departure, when designing or studying interaction with technologies. This one-day workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners within the CHI community to discuss, map, and unpack emerging tensions and challenges on the topic of body politics for HCI. Interested participants are invited to submit examples from their own research, which, in the workshop, will be used as a point of departure to critically reflect on and expand body-centric methods, theories and domains through the lens of body politics. Workshop outcomes will include charting future directions for body-centric research to address challenges and opportunities of acknowledging that bodies are always political in design research. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Development and Initial Evaluation of a Digital Phenotype Collection System for Adolescents: Proof-of-Concept Study

Background: The growing concern on adolescent mental health calls for proactive early detection and intervention strategies. There is a recognition of the link between digital phenotypes and mental health, drawing attention to their potential use. However, the process of collecting digital phenotype data presents challenges despite its promising prospects. Objective: This study aims to develop and validate system concepts for collecting adolescent digital phenotypes that effectively manage inherent challenges in the process. Methods: In a formative investigation (N=34), we observed adolescent self-recording behaviors and conducted interviews to develop design goals. These goals were then translated into system concepts, which included planners resembling interfaces, simplified data input with tags, visual reports on behaviors and moods, and supportive ecological momentary assessment (EMA) prompts. A proof-of-concept study was conducted over 2 weeks (n=16), using tools that simulated the concepts to record daily activities and complete EMA surveys. The effectiveness of the system was evaluated through semistructured interviews, supplemented by an analysis of the frequency of records and responses. Results: The interview findings revealed overall satisfaction with the system concepts, emphasizing strong support for self-recording. Participants consistently maintained daily records throughout the study period, with no missing data. They particularly valued the recording procedures that aligned well with their self-recording goal of time management, facilitated by the interface design and simplified recording procedures. Visualizations during recording and subsequent report viewing further enhanced engagement by identifying missing data and encouraging deeper self-reflection. This paper examines the potential of commercial earbuds for detecting physiological biomarkers like heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) for stress assessment. Using accelerometer (IMU) and photoplethysmography (PPG) data from earbuds, we compared these estimates with reference electrocardiogram (ECG) data from 81 healthy participants. We explored using low-power accelerometer sensors for capturing ballistocardiography (BCG) signals. However, BCG signal quality can vary due to individual differences and body motion. Therefore, BCG data quality assessment is critical before extracting any meaningful biomarkers. To address this, we introduced the ECG-gated BCG heatmap, a new method for assessing BCG signal quality. We trained a Random Forest model to identify usable signals, achieving 82% test accuracy. Filtering out unusable signals improved HR/HRV estimation accuracy to levels comparable to PPG-based estimates. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of accurate physiological monitoring with earbuds, advancing the development of user-friendly wearable health technologies for stress management. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

The recent popularity of soft robots for marine applications has established a need for the reliable fabrication of actuators that enable locomotion, articulation, and grasping in aquatic environments. These actuators should also reduce the negative impact on sensitive ecosystems by using biodegradable materials such as organic hydrogels. Freeform Reversible Embedding of Suspended Hydrogels (FRESH) printing can be used for additive manufacturing of small-scale biologically derived, marine-sourced hydraulic actuators by printing thin-wall structures out of sustainably sourced calcium-alginate hydrogels. However, controlling larger alginate robots with complex geometries and multiple actuation mechanisms remains challenging due to the reduced strength of such soft structures. For tethered hydrogel hydraulic robots, a direct interface with fluid lines is necessary for actuation, but the drag forces associated with tethered lines can quickly overcome the actuation force of distal and extremity structures. To overcome this challenge, in this study, we identify printing parameters and interface geometries to allow the working fluid to be channeled to distal components of FRESH-printed alginate robots and demonstrate a proof-of-concept biodegradable robotic arm for small object manipulation and grasping in marine environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

This one-day hybrid workshop builds on previous feminist CSCW workshops to explore feminist theoretical and methodological approaches that have provided us with useful tools to see things differently and make space for change. Since its inception over a decade ago, feminist HCI has progressed from the margins to mainstream HCI, with numerous references in the literature. Feminist HCI has also evolved to incorporate other critical HCI practices such as Queer HCI, participatory design, and speculative design. While feminist approaches have grown in popularity and become mainstream, it is getting more difficult to distinguish the feminist emancipatory core from other attempts of developing and improving society in various ways. In this workshop, we therefore want to revisit our feminist roots, where theory is a liberatory and creative practice, motivated by affect, curiosity, and wonder. From this standpoint, we consider which of our feminist tools can make a significant difference today, in a highly datafied world. The goal of this workshop is to;1) create an inventory of feminist theories and concepts that have had an impact on our work as designers, educators, researchers, and activists;2) develop a feminist toolbox for the CSCW community to strengthen our feminist literacy. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Language is an act of identity, but AI has no identity other than that which its creators assign it. Technology creators who do not fully consider how identity information is encoded in AI dialogue risk creating representational harms that negatively impact users' interactions with the technology, particularly young users from groups marginalized in STEM education. One solution is to engage young users in Participatory Design of dialogue, pushing power away from the researcher and toward the young users. This positions users as technology creators who understand AI language as a technosocial phenomenon and who have their own perspective about how identity is best portrayed in AI language. In this work in progress paper, we provide initial impressions from a Youth Advisory Group (YAG) with 12 middle-school-aged learners of color who are all female or non-binary. © 2022 Owner/Author.

Informing people of health threats is crucial as they may lack situation awareness (SA) of risky situations when they do not have personal experiences or lessons learned from dangerous encounters. In this work, we explored the potential of using an interactive VR (Virtual Reality) story to raise people's SA of health risks. We first worked with seven participants to iteratively design the immersive story and summarized five design considerations. Then, we implemented the VR story with five design features referring to the design considerations. Using a between-subjects study (N=62), we evaluated the effects of the VR story on raising SA and investigated the role of each design feature. Our results show that the VR story can promote SA by enhancing people's connection to risky situations. Design features such as immersive visualizations, multiple perspectives, and embodied interactions contribute to this connection. Drawing on qualitative and quantitative findings, we discuss the implications of designing VR stories for promoting public health. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Medical diagnoses typically contain strong jargon that is inaccessible to people with lower health literacy. Mental health is one such domain where comprehensibility is exacerbated further. Even with increasing awareness about mental health, support from practitioners or authentic knowledge sources is required to understand diagnostic information. Through this work, we utilize locally trained and finetuned Large Language Models (LLMs) to examine comprehension improvement of mental health diagnostic reports. Through a survey (n=105) with participants over 18 and a demonstration to practicing professionals, we examine the outputs of our AI-driven approach. Our approach offers two key benefits: (1) it simplifies complex psychiatric information for laypersons, providing understandable explanations;(2) it enables doctors to access concise summaries and information via tailored retrieval techniques. We outline this tool’s development, explain the methodology, evaluate its potential for information gain and healthcare delivery, and propose directions for future research. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Exploring Trade-Offs for Online Mental Health Matching: Agent-Based Modeling Study

Background: Online mental health communities (OMHCs) are an effective and accessible channel to give and receive social support for individuals with mental and emotional issues. However, a key challenge on these platforms is finding suitable partners to interact with given that mechanisms to match users are currently underdeveloped or highly naive. Objective: In this study, we collaborated with one of the world’s largest OMHCs;our contribution is to show the application of agent-based modeling for the design of online community matching algorithms. We developed an agent-based simulation framework and showcased how it can uncover trade-offs in different matching algorithms between people seeking support and volunteer counselors. Methods: We used a comprehensive data set spanning January 2020 to April 2022 to create a simulation framework based on agent-based modeling that replicates the current matching mechanisms of our research site. After validating the accuracy of this simulated replication, we used this simulation framework as a “sandbox” to test different matching algorithms based on the deferred acceptance algorithm. We compared trade-offs among these different matching algorithms based on various metrics of interest, such as chat ratings and matching success rates. Results: Our study suggests that various tensions emerge through different algorithmic choices for these communities. For example, our simulation uncovered that increased waiting time for support seekers was an inherent consequence on these sites when intelligent matching was used to find more suitable matches. Our simulation also verified some intuitive effects, such as that the greatest number of support seeker–counselor matches occurred using a “first come, first served” protocol, whereas relatively fewer matches occurred using a “last come, first served” protocol.
