We describe a broadly-applicable conservative error correcting model, N-fold Templated Piped Correction (NTPC), that consistently improves the accuracy of existing high-accuracy base models. Under circumstances where most obvious approaches actually reduce accuracy more than they improve it, NTPC nevertheless comes with little risk of accidentally degrading performance. NTPC is particularly well suited for natural language applications involving high-dimensional feature spaces, such as bracketing and disambiguation tasks, since its easily customizable templatedriven learner allows efficient search over the kind of complex feature combinations that have typically eluded the base models. We show empirically that NTPC yields small but consistent accuracy gains on top of even high-performing models like boosting. We also give evidence that the various extreme design parameters in NTPC are indeed necessary for the intended operating range, even though they diverge from usual practice.

In certain spaces using some distance measures, the sum of any two distances is always bigger than the third one. Such a special property is called the tri-edge inequality (TEI). In this paper, the tri-edge inequality characterizing several binary distance measures is mathematically proven and experimentally verified, and the implications of TEI are discussed as well.

Tactile data from rugged gloves are providing the foundation for developing autonomous grasping skills for the NASA/DARPA Robonaut, a dexterous humanoid robot. These custom gloves compliment the human like dexterity available in the Robonaut hands. Multiple versions of the gloves are discussed, showing a progression in using advanced materials and construction techniques to enhance sensitivity and overall sensor coverage. The force data provided by the gloves can be used to improve dexterous, tool and power grasping primitives. Experiments with the latest gloves focus on the use of tools, specifically a power drill used to approximate an astronaut's torque tool.
The key to the successful simulation of deformable objects is to model the realistic behavior of deformation when they are influenced by intricate contact conditions and geometric constraints. This paper describes con...

In this paper the miniaturized microphone unit that can be utilized to the implantable middle car and inner ear is designed and implemented. The implantable microphone unit that planed to set up in the center of the pinna has been designed to ensure the necessary dynamic range and to improve the sensitivity of microphone unit. In addition to, the microphone unit is miniaturized and its biocompatibility of human body is considered. The microphone unit is composed of a minimized electric microphone, a titanium case which has 5.3 mm diameter and 3.7 mm height, a SUS316L vibrating membrane of 10 /spl mu/m thickness which is touched with a hypodermic tissue and adopted for the less attenuation of microphone sensitivity. Through the experiments of the fabricated microphone unit, it is verified that the implemented microphone unit operates up to the bandwidth of 5 kHz without declining of sensitivity in the 6 mm hypodermic tissue.

For the measurement of biomedical signals in the under body, a miniaturized implantable wireless telemetry system is implemented. This overall system consists of a charging system, an IR receiver, a multi-channel signal processor and a FM transmitter. All the parts are packed in the titanium case of which size is 50(L)/spl times/27(W)/spl times/7(H) mm. To control the implanted device at the external body and utilize the advantages of the simplification of circuit structure and the reduction of power consumption, an infrared wireless communication method has been adopted. The implements system uses a unique data protocol to prevent the interferences from other infrared remote control of the household appliances. The surface of the implanted device has been coated by biocompatible material to be implanted in the body. This system can be applied to measurements system of various kinds of bio-signals such as bio-electrical, bio-chemical and bio-mechanical signals, including EMG, ECG, insulin level, blood pressure signal etc.

In 1997, the European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society (EPOS) initiated an international survey of musculoskeletal problems in individuals with Down syndrome. The goals of the study were far-reaching and ambitious in order to obtain a clear picture of the variety of orthopedic problems associated with Down syndrome, to relate their occurrence to other medical conditions, and to record and compare methods of treatment. The survey was to be international in scope, including orthopedic surgeons and departments across Europe and outside Europe. The study was coordinated from the Tel Aviv University in Israel as a multicenter study using electronic technology. This paper describes the organization and implementation of the EPOS Down Syndrome Survey, with special emphasis on the sophisticated electronic data entry instrument that was developed especially for the survey. It is concluded that computerized data entry forms like the one that we developed for the EPOS Down Syndrome Survey are valuable tools for medical surveys. They are especially important for multicenter and multinational studies.
