We examine how animating a viewpoint change in a spatial information system affects a user's ability to build a mental map of the information in the space. We found that animation improves users' ability to reconstruct the information space, with no penalty on task performance time. We believe that this study provides strong evidence for adding animated transitions in many applications with fixed spatial data where the user navigates around the data space.

This paper presents a statistical approach to developing multimodal recognition systems and, in particular, to integrating the posterior probabilities of parallel input signals involved in the multimodal system. We first derive the performance bounds of multimodal recognition probabilities, and identify the primary factors that influence multimodal recognition performance. We then develop a technique, a members-teams-committee (MTC) recognition approach, designed to optimize accurate recognition during the multimodal integration process. We evaluate these methods using Quickset, a speech/gesture multimodal system, and report evaluation results based on an empirical corpus collected with Quickset. From an architectural perspective, the integration technique presented offers enhanced robustness. It also is premised on more realistic assumptions than previous multimodal systems using semantic fusion. From a methodological standpoint, the evaluation techniques that we describe provide a valuable tool for evaluating multimodal systems.

In teleoperation, it is important for an operator to feel as if he really were in a distant place. To realize this objective, the various information from a remote site must be presented to the operator. Even though tactile information is very important to execute a task efficiently, it is not yet sufficiently provided for the operator. We propose a mechanism that can provide more dexterous tactile information to the operator. This device utilizing electromagnetic force is designed to be compact and light enough to attach to the fingerpad, and designed to be controlled continuously. The magnetic circuit is derived by the probable flux paths method in order to take forces at any given dimension. An optimization technique is also proposed to maximize the tactile force that humans can perceive under the same conditions. It is demonstrated that, by optimization, the tactile force increases by 24%, compared with that obtained from the initial design.

The line spectral frequencies (LSFs) extracted from successive analysis orders are interlaced with each other. This intermodel interlacing property gives a new relationship between the closeness of LSFs and their spectral sensitivities, which enables us to propose a weighting function for LSF distortion measurement. By applying the proposed weighting function to an LSF quantizer, we can achieve better performance than when using the conventional heuristic functions. Moreover, the complexity of the proposed weighting function is much lower than that of the optimal weighting function, while their performances are almost the same.

Genetic assays are powerful technology drivers and excellent candidate applications for miniaturization technologies because the demand for inexpensive genetic information is essentially unlimited, and the cost and time for the assay decrease with sample volume. Genetic information is stored in long DNA molecules in solution. Processing of DNA molecules in the microscale hence requires the implementation of microfluidic devices capable of handling, mixing, thermal cycling, separating, and detecting nano and pico liter liquid samples. We present the effect of several standard speech coders on speech recognition in adverse communication environments such as tandem, frame erasure, and noisy conditions. These environments were chosen to simulate the operational condition of IMT-2000. The comparative results can provide a guideline for selecting a speech coder when a speech recognition service is needed in digital communication networks.
