Software prototypes are becoming more and more important, as computer applications invade new domains and as personal prototyping environments become more powerful. Although numerous approaches recommend their use, prototypes are sometimes treated like their developers' personal toys, and little effort is made to extract and share the experiences and knowledge that emerged as a by-product of building the prototype. In this paper, a strategy is proposed to extract crucial pieces of knowledge from a prototype and from its developer. The strategy is based on monitoring explanations that developers give, analyzing their structure, and feeding results back to support and to focus explanations. During this process, the prototype turns into the centerpiece of a hyperstructured information base, which can be used to convey concepts, implementation tricks and experiences. If organizations begin to view-and treat-prototypes as executable representations of knowledge, they can fully capitalize on the assets prototypes really are.

The standard method of embedding time series data is to use a moving window of past values. By the inverse relationship between time and frequency localization, all information contained in frequencies with a period of more than twice the window size is lost using this scheme. Increasing the window size comes at the price of adding more degrees of freedom, and thereby worsening the curse of dimensionality. Wavelets provide a potential solution to this problem. Using multiresolution analysis we can separate the different time-scales in a given time series. Using the single scale representation of a signal we determine whether this method of embedding will aid in the building of predictive linear models. By separating the time series into its component time-scales, we hope to determine at which time-scale the series is most predictable.

We study a time series model that can be viewed as a decision tree with Markov temporal structure. The model is intractable for exact calculations, thus we utilize variational approximations. We consider three different distributions for the approximation: one in which the Markov calculations are performed exactly and the layers of the decision tree are decoupled, one in which the decision tree calculations are performed exactly and the time steps of the Markov chain are decoupled, and one in which a Viterbi-like assumption is made to pick out a single most likely state sequence. We present simulation results for artificial data and the Bach chorales.

The objectives of Human Engineering (HE) are generally viewed as increasing human performance, reducing human error, enhancing personnel and equipment safety, and reducing training and related personnel costs. There are other benefits that are thoroughly consistent with the direction of the Navy of the future, chief among these is reduction of required numbers of personnel to operate and maintain Navy ships. The Naval Research Advisory Committee (NRAC) report on Man-machine Technology in the Navy estimated that one of the benefits from increased application of man-machine technology to Navy ship design is personnel reduction as well as improving system availability, effectiveness, and safety The objective of this paper is to discuss aspects of the human engineering design of ships and systems that affect manning requirements, and impact human-performance and safety The paper will also discuss how the application of human engineering leads to improved performance, and crew safety, and reduced workload, all of which influence manning levels. Finally, the paper presents a discussion of tools and case studies of good human engineering design practices which reduce manning.

In this paper, we present a novel approach to optical character recognition that utilizes ring-projection-wavelet-fractal-signatures. In particular, the proposed approach reduces the dimensionality of a two-dimensional pattern by way of a ring-projection method, and thereafter, performs Daubechies' wavelet transform on the derived one-dimensional pattern to generate a set of wavelet sub-patterns, namely, curves that are non-self intersecting. Further from the resulting non-self intersecting curves, the divider dimensions are readily computed. These divider dimensions constitute a new characteristic vector for the original two-dimensional pattern, defined over the curves' fractal dimensions.
