sEMG-based Sarcopenia risk classification using empirical mode decomposition and machine learning algorithms

Early detection of the risk of sarcopenia at younger ages is crucial for implementing preventive strategies, fostering healthy muscle development, and minimizing the negative impact of sarcopenia on health and aging. In this study, we propose a novel sarcopenia risk detection technique that combines surface electromyography (sEMG) signals and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) with machine learning algorithms. First, we recorded and preprocessed sEMG data from both healthy and at-risk individuals during various physical activities, including normal walking, fast walking, performing a standard squat, and performing a wide squat. Next, electromyography (EMG) features were extracted from a normalized EMG and its intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) were obtained through EMD. Subsequently, a minimum redundancy maximum relevance (mRMR) feature selection method was employed to identify the most influential subset of features. Finally, the performances of state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) classifiers were evaluated using a leave-one-subject-out cross-validation technique, and the effectiveness of the classifiers for sarcopenia risk classification was assessed through various performance metrics. The proposed method shows a high accuracy, with accuracy rates of 0.88 for normal walking, 0.89 for fast walking, 0.81 for a standard squat, and 0.80 for a wide squat, providing reliable identification of sarcopenia risk during physical activities. Beyond early sarcopenia risk detection, this sEMG-EMD-ML system offers practical values for assessing muscle function, muscle health monitoring, and managing muscle quality for an improved daily life and well-being. © 2024 American Institute of Mathematical sciences. Probing quantum causality with geometric asymmetry in spatial-temporal correlations

Causation promotes the understanding of correlation to an advanced stage by elucidating its underlying mechanism. Although statisticians have specified the possible causal relations among correlations,inferring causal structures is impossible from only the observed correlations in the classical world. Quantum correlations encapsulating the most defining aspects of quantum physics have taken a new turn for the causal inference problem — the two-point spatial and temporal quantum correlations with observationally discernible characteristics correspond exactly to the two most basic causal structures. However, a direct causal interpretation for quantum correlations has only been established in very limited cases. Here, we explore to what extent quantum correlations promote causal inference. Theoretically, we have found that the distinguishable causal regime of two-point Pauli correlations can be expanded from a single value to an asymmetric interval, and the causal structures determining the quantum correlations can be interpreted by a simple distance criterion. Experimentally, we have devised and implemented a versatile non-unital quantum channel in an optical architecture to directly observe such an asymmetric interval. The setup enabled quantum causal inference without any requirement of active intervention, which is impossible in the classical realm. Our work facilitates the identification of causal links among quantum variables and provides insight into characterizing causation and spatial-temporal correlation in quantum mechanics.

Numerous neural network(NN)applications are now being deployed to mobile *** applications usually have large amounts of calculation and data while requiring low inference latency,which poses challenges to the computing ability of mobile ***,devices’life and performance depend on ***,in many scenarios,such as industrial production and automotive systems,where the environmental temperatures are usually high,it is important to control devices’temperatures to maintain steady *** this paper,we propose a thermal-aware channel-wise heterogeneous NN inference *** contains two parts,the thermal-aware dynamic frequency(TADF)algorithm and the heterogeneous-processor single-layer workload distribution(HSWD)*** on a mobile device’s architecture characteristics and environmental temperature,TADF can adjust the appropriate running speed of the central processing unit and graphics processing unit,and then the workload of each layer in the NN model is distributed by HSWD in line with each processor’s running speed and the characteristics of the layers as well as heterogeneous *** experimental results,where representative NNs and mobile devices were used,show that the proposed method can considerably improve the speed of the on-device inference by 21%–43%over the traditional inference method.

Dental caries detection holds the key to unlocking brighter smiles and healthier lives by identifying one of the most common oral health issues early on. This vital topic sheds light on innovative ways to combat tooth decay, empowering individuals to take control of their oral health and maintain radiant smiles. This research paper delves into the realm of transfer learning techniques, aiming to elevate the precision and efficacy of dental caries diagnosis. Utilizing Keras ImageDataGenerator, a rich and balanced dataset is crafted by augmenting teeth images from the Kaggle teeth dataset. Five cutting-edge pre-trained architectures are harnessed in the transfer learning approach: EfficientNetV2B3, VGG19, InceptionResNetV2, Xception, and ResNet50, with each model, initialized using ImageNet weights and tailored top layers. A comprehensive set of evaluation metrics, encompassing accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and false negative rates are employed to gauge the performance of these architectures. The findings unveil the unique advantages and drawbacks of each model, illuminating the path to an optimal choice for dental caries detection using Grad-CAM (Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping). The testing accuracies achieved by EfficientNetV2B3, VGG19, InceptionResNetV2, Xception, and ResNet50 models stand at 95.89%, 96.58%, 93.15%, 93.15%, and 94.18%, respectively. The Training accuracies stood at 100%, 99.91%, 100%, 100% and 100%, meanwhile on validation we achieved 97.63%, 96.68%, 98.82%, 96.68%, and 100% accuracies for EfficientNetV2B3, VGG19, InceptionResNetV2, Xception, and ResNet50 models respectively. Capitalizing on transfer learning and juxtaposing diverse pre-trained architectures, this research paper paves the way for substantial advancements in dental diagnostic capabilities, culminating in enhanced patient outcomes and superior oral health. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Incorporating syntax information into attention mechanism vector for improved aspect-based opinion mining

In Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA), accurately determining the sentiment polarity of specific aspects within text requires a nuanced understanding of linguistic elements, including syntax. Traditional ABSA approaches, particularly those leveraging attention mechanisms, have shown effectiveness but often fall short in integrating crucial syntax information. Moreover, while some methods employ Graph Neural networks (GNNs) to extract syntax information, they face significant limitations, such as information loss due to pooling operations. Addressing these challenges, our study proposes a novel ABSA framework that bypasses the constraints of GNNs by directly incorporating syntax-aware insights into the analysis process. Our approach, the Syntax-Informed Attention Mechanism Vector (SIAMV), integrates syntactic distances obtained from dependency trees and part-of-speech (POS) tags into the attention vectors, ensuring a deeper focus on linguistically relevant elements. This not only substantially enhances ABSA accuracy by enriching the attention mechanism but also maintains the integrity of sequential information, a task managed by adopting Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks. The LSTM’s inputs, consisting of syntactic distance, POS tags, and the sentence itself, are processed to generate a syntax vector. This vector is then combined with the attention vector, offering a robust model that adeptly captures the nuances of language. Moreover, the sequential processing capability of LSTM ensures minimal information loss across the text by preserving the context and dependencies inherent in the sentence structure, unlike traditional pooling methods. Our experimental findings demonstrate that this innovative combination of SIAMV and LSTM significantly outperforms existing GNN-based ABSA models in accuracy, thereby setting a new standard for sentiment analysis research. Wireless network stability is critical for organizations. Most companies rely on a solid Internet connection for at least part of their day-to-day activities. It is essential to show the fast and high capacity of Wi-Fi. Wireless network management also significantly supplies the user with quality service and helps the system administrator manage and track the network infrastructure. The user must be able to stay connected. The Wi-Fi connection engine was applied in this article using the analysis and locations engine (ALE). ALE provides the information, including MAC address, location, floor information, and the building where the device belongs. From this data, we presented the Web visualization of the Wi-Fi network monitoring system on the map using Cesium. Except for the common information about Wi-Fi users, this work presents the vertical position visualization in the buildings to provide more details about user usage. This work analyzes the user experience of using the proposed system, and latency is the appropriate metric to measure the user experience. The experiment results show that the optimized number of cluster partitions is four, and the latency is less than 1.3 s for 4-MB data. Therefore, the system provides a visualization platform with acceptable system response, and Internet managers would consider the proposed system as the management tool. © 2014 IEEE.

Effects of Performance Goal Orientations on English Translation Techniques in Digital Game-Based Learning

Despite a growing body of literature on performance goals and learning, limited studies have explored their influence on English translation education within the context of Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL). To address this gap, this study developed a DGBL system to assist students in learning English translation techniques, and compared the effects of students’ different performance goal orientations (performance-approach versus performance-avoidance goals) on their learning performance, in-game performance, self-efficacy, fear of failure, and learning perceptions. The participants were 56 university students, who were divided into a performance-approach group (PAPG) and a performance-avoidance group (PAVG). The study used quantitative analysis with data from English translation technique tests, log data from gaming sessions, and three questionnaires. It was found that the PAPG exhibited significant improvements in relatively difficult translation techniques (i.e., conversion), while the PAVG showed notable improvements in relatively simple translation techniques (i.e., polysemy). Furthermore, the PAPG outperformed the PAVG in in-game performance related to polysemy. This study enhances our understanding of the impact of performance goal orientations on both learning and in-game performance in English translation education, particularly within the context of DGBL. © 2024 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

An End-to-End Deep Learning QoS Prediction Model Based on Temporal Context and Feature Fusion

Existing end-to-end quality of service (QoS) prediction methods based on deep learning often use one-hot encodings as features, which are input into neural networks. It is difficult for the networks to learn the information that is conducive to prediction. Aiming at the above problem, an end-to-end deep learning QoS prediction model based on a temporal context and feature fusion is proposed. In the proposed model, three blocks are designed for QoS prediction. Firstly, a user-service encoding conversion block is designed to convert the one-hot encodings of users and services into the latent features of users and services, which can make full use of the data in sparse matrices. Then a time feature extraction block is designed to extract time features based on the time-varying characteristics of QoS values. Finally, the time features are fused with the latent features of users and services to predict QoS values. The experimental results show that on existing datasets, the proposed model has better prediction accuracy than other advanced methods in response time and throughput. © 2025 IEEE.
