Over the years, there have been two main branches of computergraphics image-synthesis research;one focused on interactivity, the other on image quality. Procedural shading is a powerful tool, commonly used for creating high-quality images and production animation. A key aspect of most procedural shading is the use of a shading language, which allows a high-level description of the color and shading of each surface. However, shading languages have been beyond the capabilities of the interactive graphics hardware community. We have created a parallel graphics multicomputer, PixelFlow, that can render images at 30 frames per second using a shading language. This is the first system to be able to support a shading language in real-time. In this paper, we describe some of the techniques that make this possible.

Many techniques have been developed for 3D object deformation. These techniques have been widely used in most CAD/CAM systems. Intuitive while efficient methods for interactive 3D object deformation in a VR environment, however, are rare. One of our current research projects is to develop such a technique based on the use of a sensor glove. The idea is to create a hand surface interpolating through all the data points of the sensor glove. Through mapping the vertices of an object model to the hand surface, the object model may be deformed simply by changing the hand gesture. An initial method for implementing this idea was presented in our recent paper. In this paper, we discuss some of the limitations of the earlier method and present a refined method that overcomes most of the limitations. The resulting method is both efficient and intuitive as demonstrated by the results of our experiments.

A novel design of a test pattern generator (TPG) for built-in self-testing (BIST) of path delay faults, is proposed. For an n-input CUT, the TPG generates a sequence of length (n.2/sup n/+1), that includes all n.2/sup n/ single-input-change (SIC) test pairs, and hence optimal. The generation of such a sequence of minimum length (i.e., n.2/sup n/+1) was an open problem. A simple iterative circuit of the TPG is then constructed. This provides minimum test application time for testing path delay faults, and compares favorably with the earlier BIST designs.

One of the essential properties of a surface is its normal vector. Many applications, i.e., surface rendering, surface-surface intersection, and offset surface generation, require normal vectors. A normal vector at a point on a tensor product surface is usually obtained by taking a cross product of the two partial derivatives. This paper discusses a Bezier normal vector surface which is a locus of an unnormalized cross product normal vector. It also explains several applications of the Bezier normal vector surface, such as detection and computation of degenerate normal vectors which cannot be calculated by the cross product, and an algorithm to find all critical points which are key points to solve the problems on surface-surface intersection.

Our goal is to develop physically based lighting models and perceptually based rendering procedures for computergraphics that will produce synthetic images that are visually and measurably indistinguishable from real-world images. Fidelity of the physical simulation is of primary concern. Our research framework is subdivided into three sub-sections: the local light reflection model, the energy transport simulation, and the visual display algorithms. The first two subsections are physically based, and the last is perceptually based. We emphasize the comparisons between simulations and actual measurements, the difficulties encountered, and the need to utilize the vast amount of psychophysical research already conducted. Future research directions are enumerated. We hope that results of this research will help establish a more fundamental, scientific approach for future rendering algorithms. This presentation describes a chronology of past research in global illumination and how parts of our new system are currently being developed.
