The authors have developed a graphical user interface that supports the development of data-parallel programs for distributed-memory multiple instruction multiple data (MIMD) computers. The name of the tool is Intercom, since it facilitates programmer interaction with the compiler. Intercom allows the programmer to edit data-parallel programs, invoke the compiler, and examine the places in the program where the compiler has inserted calls to the message-passing library. Intercom also provides automatic version control, which allows the programmer to revert to earlier versions of the program at any point in the editing session. Intercom is a Motif-based application running in an X11 environment. Currently, Intercom is being used to support the development of programs written in the Dataparallel C language.< >

A new contour extraction method is described in this paper. It is based on organization of the image data using perceptual grouping rules, and is therefore largely domain independent. The first step is to form an intermediate line segment representation of the contours by grouping edge points in parallel and at different resolutions. The main feature of the line segment extraction process is the identification, by perceptual criteria, of weak but significant edge points for participation in the grouping process. In the second stage the line segments are grouped into contours, again on the basis of perceptual criteria. This grouping stage is carried out hierarchically using a pyramid structure. In both cases, the use of perceptual grouping allows the filtering of noisy edges and line segments regardless of their strength.

They are characterized by having a torso, two manipulator arms, a head mounted with vision system, and a lower body which is either a transport unit or legs. The total number of degrees-of-freedom involved is usually fairly large for these robots. Traditional models of input work on the assumption that inputs delivered to a system are fairly certain to have occurred as they are reported. However, a number of new input modalities, such as pen-based inputs, hand and body gesture inputs, and voice input, do not share this property. Inputs under these techniques are normally acquired by a process of recognition. As a result, each of these techniques makes mistakes and provides inputs which are approximate or uncertain. This paper considers some preliminry techniques for dialog management in the presence of this uncertainty. These techniques—including a new input model and a set of extended state machine abstractions—will explicitly model uncertainty and handle it as a normal and expected part of the input process.
