In the modern digital world, the use of animated applications has increased significantly and such applications have quietly become an integral part of life. Capturing human motions is a fundamental aspect of these applications which is performed by motion-capturing (MoCap) systems. Due to the heterogeneity of MoCap systems and marker configurations, the captured skeletons may vary in their structure, number of joints, and bone lengths. The need for motion retargeting arises to transfer motion captured from one articulated actor to another. Although motion retargeting is a long-standing issue, current methods cannot automatically execute retargeting between skeletons. This paper presents the retraining of a popular motion retargeting network with a new large-scale motion dataset. The retraining aims to demonstrate the capabilities of the motion retargeting network to handle the problem of motion retargeting between skeletons that may have different structures. The paper first, presents the motion retargeting network that employs an encoder-decoder architecture. Afterward, we re-train the motion retargeting network with a new MoCap dataset. To validate the effectiveness of the network, we visually compare the generated results with the existing retargeting model. The results show that the motion retargeting network effectively retargets the different motions. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected all aspects of our daily life and imposed social distancing among people. In higher education, the shift from traditional learning (TL) to the distance learning (DL) model has become inevitable to continue academic life. However, this unexpected shift is complex and poses new challenges and obstacles for the stakeholders of the DL system. In this research, the DL system's stakeholders have been classified into students, instructors, technical administrators, and educational administrators. This research study aims to gather the perceptions of and satisfaction level of these stakeholders with DL and explore the challenges encountered by these stakeholders during the shift to DL during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, four questionnaires were developed and distributed to the identified stakeholders at the University of Petra, which has been adopted as a case study for this research. © 2024 IEEE.

Estimation of importance for considered features is an important issue for any knowledge exploration process and it can be executed by a variety of approaches. In the research reported in this study, the primary aim was the development of a methodology for creating attribute rankings. Based on the properties of the greedy algorithm for inducing decision rules, a new application of this algorithm has been proposed. Instead of constructing a single ordering of features, attributes were weighted multiple times. The input datasets were discretised with several algorithms representing supervised and unsupervised discretisation approaches. Each resulting discrete data variant was exploited to construct a ranking of attributes. The effectiveness of the obtained rankings was confirmed through a rule filtering process governed by weighted attributes. The methodology was applied to the stylometric task of authorship attribution. The experimental outcomes demonstrate the value of the proposed research method, as it generally led to improved predictions while taking into account a noticeably decreased sets of attributes and decision rules. © 2024 The Authors.

Treemaps are a popular representation to show hierarchical as well as part-to-whole relationships in data. While most students are aware of node-link representations/network diagrams based on their K-12 education, treemaps are often a novel representation to them. We present our experience of developing a software using principles from constructivism to help students understand treemaps using linked, side-by-side views of a node-link diagram and a treemap of the same data. Based on the qualitative survey conducted at the end of the intervention, students found the linked views to be beneficial for understanding hierarchical representation of data using treemaps. © 2023 The Authors.

The paper presents a description of the research methodology dedicated to a two-step discretisation process applied to the input numeric data, with combining the characteristics of selected supervised and unsupervised algorithms, which leads to extended processing of some attributes in train and test sets. The methodology was illustrated with the investigations carried out in the domain of stylometric analysis of texts, for two datasets prepared for the task of binary authorship attribution. The several variants of transformed input data obtained were subjected to exploration using two selected machine learning methods capable of inducing knowledge from both continuous and categorical forms, namely the PART and J48 classifiers. The results from the experiments indicate that, as can be expected, supervised transformations of data work well enough, however, they do not always return the best outcome. The two-step processing of some attributes shows sufficient promise to warrant a closer study, as opposed to always unconditionally relying only on supervised algorithms as outperforming all other approaches. © 2023 The Authors. This paper presents a tool for automatic and interactive visualization of game plots, which can be used to check whether the designers’ work meets the constraints of the world, to help testers control played game story paths. The referential designers’ game plots can be imported from any flowchart diagrams as an XML file and the actual gameplay variant is generated on the fly and applied to the original design based on detected common diagram points. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper summarises the Competition on Presentation Attack Detection on ID Cards (PAD-IDCard) held at the 2024 International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB 2024). The competition attracted a total of ten registered teams, both from academia and industry. In the end, the participating teams submitted five valid submissions, with eight models to be evaluated by the organisers. The competition presented an independent assessment of current state-of-the-art algorithms. Today, no independent evaluation on cross-dataset is available;therefore, this work determined the state-of-the-art on ID cards. To reach this goal, a sequestered test set and baseline algorithms were used to evaluate and compare all the proposals. The sequestered test dataset contains ID cards from four different countries. In summary, a team that chose to be "Anonymous"reached the best average ranking results of 74.80%, followed very closely by the "IDVC"team with 77.65%. © 2024 IEEE.

Decision reducts and rules belong to forms used for the representation of knowledge learnt from input data while using a rough set approach in the exploration stage. As with any patterns that capture properties of data, the size is considered as the most important indicator of their quality, as a more general and concise description allows for improved understanding and simplified interpretation. The size of a reduct is given by its cardinality, and for a rule it is a number of included conditions, both referred to as lengths. These lengths undergo transformations along with data transformations, so such processing as discretisation leads to changed characteristics of existing patterns and through them also reducts and rules. The paper presents research with contributions in the observations focused on the influence of supervised and unsupervised discretisation on properties of attributes, induced decision reducts, and rules, offering a deeper insight into relations among them. © 2023 The Authors. We present a visual analytics system to support treatment decisions in late-stage Melanoma patients. With the aim of improving patient outcomes, personalized treatment decisions based on individual characteristics and medical histories are crucial. The research focuses on the design and development of a visual analytics system tailored specifically for tumor boards, where multidisciplinary teams collaborate to make informed decisions. By leveraging a comprehensive database containing treatment and tumor stage progression information from over 1100 patients, the system provides healthcare professionals with a holistic overview and facilitates the analysis of individual cases as well as comparisons between multiple patients. The distinction between tumor board preparation systems and systems used during discussions is emphasized to ensure user-centric design and usability. Through the use of visual analytics techniques, complex relationships between treatment outcomes, temporal features, and patient-specific factors are explored, enabling clinicians to identify patterns and trends that may impact treatment decisions. The findings of this research contribute to the growing field of visual analytics in healthcare and have the potential to enhance treatment decision-making and patient care in late-stage cancer scenarios. © 2023 The Authors.

Feature selection makes significant role in movement classification based on electromyography data. It is assumed that the efficiency of movement classification is improved when time-domain (TD) and frequency-time-domain (TFD) features are used together. To validate the hypothesis, classifiers based on Support Vector Machines (SVM), K Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Random Forest (RF) were trained using NinaPro DB5 dataset. Classification efficiencies of 91.3% and 92.8% were achieved for Recall and Precision metrics, respectively, using KNN. The proposed methods can be used to create human-machine interfaces using muscle activity data.
