Recently, we witness a high usage of social media platforms for different purposes, from contacting with friends and colleagues to raising voice for different causes. Many times, on such social media platforms people are also interested to see and analyze the connections not only with their connected people but also the connections between these connected people (called the ego network of a user). Hereby they want to find out different behavioral patterns and interesting findings. In this work, we introduce our developed visualization tool, called PerSoN-Vis (Personal Social Network Visualizer). It visualizes intuitively people ego-networks and enables them to explore interactively their social contacts and the relations between these contacts. Further, it allows them to filter the resulting visualization based on several collected features. A preliminary evaluation study shows that participants performed much better in our PerSoN-Vis tool compared to Socialab social-network visualization tool. © 2016 Authors.

The purpose of this paper was to describe the 3 D nano-scaled surface topography of the aluminum nitride on sapphire. The structures were prepared by magnetron sputtering with heating of the sapphire substrate. The dependence of the layers topography on the substrate temperature was presented. Surface appearance was studied by atomic force microscopy(AFM). The quantitative topography data from AFM were used for surface characterization by fractal analysis and statistical parameters. The results of fractal analysis show the correlation of fractal dimension and statistical characteristics of surface topography. The data may contribute to manufacture of AlN thin films with desired surface characteristics.

Flat Electroencephalography (fEEG) is a technique that mapped high dimensional signal into low dimensional space. An image of fEEG which is in grayscale is obtained via fuzzy approach by the process of digitization and quantization. In this paper, the enhancement of fEEG images of two epileptic patients at varied time are presented. The images are enhanced by using intuitionistic fuzzy set theory (IFS). Moreover, the quality test of the images is determined by mean structural similarity index measure (MSSIM) for particular values of parameter namely lambda, λ in the Sugeno type intuitionistic fuzzy generator. The relationship between the membership, non-membership, and hesitation degree for λ=2 and λ=5 (of patient A at t=1) are demonstrated graphically.

Edge crossings in a graph drawing are an important factor in the drawing’s quality. However, it is not just the presence of crossings that determines the drawing’s quality: any drawing of a nonplanar graph in the plane necessarily contains crossings, but the geometric structure of those crossings can have a significant impact on the drawing’s readability. In particular, the structure of two disjoint groups of locally parallel edges (bundles) intersecting in a complete crossbar (a bundled crossing) is visually simpler—even if it involves many individual crossings—than an equal number of random crossings scattered in the plane. In this paper, we investigate the complexity of partitioning the crossings of a given drawing of a graph into a minimum number of bundled crossings. We show that this problem is NP-hard, propose a constant-factor approximation scheme for the case of circular embeddings, where all vertices lie on the outer face, and show that the bundled crossings problem in general graphs is related to a minimum dissection problem. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2016.

An energy-aware task consolidation algorithm for cloud computing data centre

Energy efficiency has become an increasingly prominent issue in cloud computing. Task consolidation is an effective way to maximise utilisation of cloud computing resources and reduce energy consumption. Presented in this paper is an improved energy-aware task consolidation algorithm to optimise the scheduling of tasks in cloud computing data centres. Our algorithm was developed based on the linear relationship between energy consumption and the CPU utilisation. Instead of consolidating tasks to a service node until its CPU utilisation reaches 100%, our algorithm uses an optimal point, where the CPU utilisation of a service node reaches 70%, and ensures that every task is preferentially assigned to service nodes that satisfy the 70% CPU utilisation. Our experiments demonstrate that our algorithm can significantly reduce the energy consumption of cloud computing data centres without performance degradation while maintaining good performance compared to the energy-conscious task consolidation (ECTC) approach. Many engineering colleges have been facing the retention problem in engineering programs due to difficulties and lack of knowledge about what really means being an engineer. It is mainly due to the fact that the first 3 years are particularly intense and hard. A possible way to overcome this period is to implement a new kind of course more attractive and dynamic, which is the idea of COPEC's engineering education research team, to embed a course with a more interesting activity for students in the first year. It is a short-term workshop in order to show the students the possibilities of performing as engineers in a global environment - a project developed for a private university in order to augment the retention rate in their engineering courses.

The world is becoming more complex and problem solving often requires teams of experts to work together at the same or from different locations. To support this there is a need for collaborative tools, and a variety of teleconferencing and telepresence technologies have been developed. However, most of them involve some variation of traditional video conferencing, which has limitations, such as not being able to effectively convey spatial cues or share the user's task space. This workshop will focus on how these limitations can be overcome by using Mixed Reality (MR) technology, leading to the development of radically new types of collaborative experiences. © 2016 IEEE.

Standing at the paradigm shift towards data-intensive science, machine learning techniques are becoming increasingly important. In particular, as a major breakthrough in the field, deep learning has proven as an extremely powerful tool in many fields. Shall we embrace deep learning as the key to all? Or, should we resist a "black-box" solution? There are controversial opinions in the remote sensing community. In this article, we analyze the challenges of using deep learning for remote sensing data analysis, review the recent advances, and provide resources to make deep learning in remote sensing ridiculously simple to start with. More importantly, we advocate remote sensing scientists to bring their expertise into deep learning, and use it as an implicit general model to tackle unprecedented large-scale influential challenges, such as climate change and urbanization. This paper is a work in progress research to practice project developed in order to enhance the quality of engineering programs. It is a fact that the so called global work market has become challenging and increasingly multicultural The not so new trend for university programs is the internationalization that is a strategic element to raise the quality of courses and thus attracts more students. This trend has made many universities to revise and update their strategies so that their students and their graduates can have the essential academic and professional skills that allow them to enter and to stay in the work market. Although it is not the only measure that guarantees a good course it adds value for the formation of the new professional. The objective is to make it more attractive and promote the double diploma in order to higher the quality of the offered programs.

Today, the need for interaction and visualization techniques to fulfill user requirements for collaborative work is ever increasing. Current approaches do not suffice since they do not consider the simultaneous work of participating users, different views of the data being analyzed, or the exchange of information between different data emphases. We introduce Intuitive Collaboration (IN2CO), a scalable visualization framework that supports decision-making processes concerning multilevels and multi-roles. IN2CO improves the state of the art by integrating ubiquitous technologies and existing techniques to explore and manipulate data and dependencies collaboratively. A prototype has been tested by mechanical engineers with expertise in factory planning. Preliminary results imply that IN2CO supports communication and decision-making in a team-oriented manner. © 2016 The Author(s) Eurographics Proceedings © 2016 The Eurographics Association.
