Realistic computergraphics will change the way people think and communicate. Achieving deeper success as a ubiquitous medium will require a more resonant understanding of visual modelling that must embrace mathematical, philosophical, cultural, perceptual and social aspects. With an interleaved understanding, people will be able to create visual ontologies that better align to their expressive needs. In turn, this will naturally lead to ubiquitous supporting technologies. First we need good visual models. A model induces an ontology of things that inevitably omits aspects of the phenomenon, whether desired or not. Thus modelling a model's incompleteness is crucial, for it allows us to account for artifacts, errors, and ontological surprises such as the "uncanny valley". Over the years, my choice of tools to model models has been mathematics. In this paper, I will speak to how little progress we have made and how much broader our investigation must be.
We introduce a geodesic based tractography method for High Angular Resolution Diffusion Imaging (HARDI). The concepts used are similar to the ones in geodesic based tractography for Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). In ...

Commonly, data used in public authorities are statistical data about certain indicator. Such valid kind of data allows an objective observation about indicator developments over time. In case of a significant deviation from the normal indicator level, it is difficult to understand the reasons for upcoming problems. In our paper we present an approach that allows an enhanced information gathering through an improved information overview about the depending aspects to such an indicator by considering governmental data-sources that provide also other types of data than just statistics. Even more, our approach integrates a system that allows generating explanations for Open Government Data, especially to specific indicators, based on Linked-Open Data. This enables decision-makers to get hints for unexpected reasons of concrete problems that may influence an indicator.
Due to continuing advances in medical imaging technology, and in medicine itself, techniques for visualizing medical image data have become increasingly important. In this chapter, we present a brief overview of the p...

Online social networks have found a significant increase in their popularity in recent years. All the networks have community structure, and one of the research problems mostly frequently tackled is the discovery of communities. An overlapping community is a network structure that allows one node to be a member of multiple communities. The method presented in this paper aims at detecting overlapping communities in social networks, and its novelty lies in that it combines with the Microblog User Model (MUM) which can reflect the interest of the user accurately. First, the MUM network, which is an undirected and weighted network, is constructed by computing the similarity among MUMs. Afterwords, Overlapping Community Detection based on MUM (OCD-MUM) is performed to partition the network. A community stops expanding when the fitness function reaches a local maximum. The communities detected are locally optimized. A user's interest is not only decided by the MUM, but it is also affected by the communities the user belongs to. The community model can reflect the interest of the community. The MUM is updated with community model of its communities, and therefore the interest of the user can be predicted by these communities. Our experiment result shows that OCD-MUM has a higher modularity Q value than traditional methods and the predicted interest is more close to the real world situations.
