Guided filter for adaptive persistence of ultrasound images

Medical ultrasonic images often suffer from the electronics noise and speckle artifact, which degrade lesion detectability and increase the likelihood of misdiagnosis. In this paper, a legible and comprehensive method for ultrasonic image is proposed and it can be effective to suppress the noise and improve the images quality. Persistence technology based on temporal multi-frames is utilized to smooth the electronics noise and even lower speckle artifact. To reduce computing complexity, a sum table method and conjugate direction search approaches are applied to speed up estimation of motion vectors. Then, the guided image filter strategy is used to enhance the contrast and detail resolution for the processed image by persistence. The experimental results show that the proposed method is better in quantitative and qualitative perfomance, and enhances the ultrasound image in contrast with existing methods. © 2013 ICIC International.

The location of foundations in a demolished building can be accomplished by undertaking a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey and then to use the GPR data to generate 3D isosurfaces of what was beneath the soil surface using image reconstruction. The SIMCA ('SIMulated Correlation Algorithm') algorithm is a technique based on a comparison between the trace that would be returned by an ideal point reflector in the soil conditions at the site and the actual trace. During an initialization phase, SIMCA carries out radar simulation using the design parameters of the radar and the soil properties. The trace which would be returned by a target under these conditions is then used to form a kernel. Then SIMCA takes the raw data as the radar is scanned over the ground and removes clutter using a clutter removal technique. The system correlates the kernel with the data by carrying out volume correlation and produces 3D images of the surface of subterranean objects detected. The 3D isosurfaces are generated using MATLAB software. The validation of the algorithm has been accomplished by comparing the 3D isosurfaces produced by the SIMCA algorithm, Scheers algorithm and REFLEXW commercial software. Then the depth and the position in the x and y directions as obtained using MATLAB software for each of the cases are compared with the corresponding values approximately obtained from original Architect's drawings of the buildings.

This paper presents a new approach for the evaluation of User Experience (UX) aspects applied to virtual museums (VM) - VMUXE. A wide percentage of projects and applications for VMs are often "born and buried" in digital labs, without having been experimented and monitored with people. These "prototypes" are the result of experts, technicians, curators, combined together to give birth for multidisciplinary and avant-garde outputs. Earlier attempts to evaluate VM installations failed due to the lack of strategy facing the multidimensional complexity in studying and comparing digital applications in different installations using different devices and metaphors offering different UXs. As a conclusion "communicating" culture through the aid of advanced technology was not a technological issue, but an epistemological one. Setting up a good process of evaluation and analysis is therefore important for establishing next generation virtual museums (NGVM) aiming to reach certain goals such as knowledge exchange, cognitive improvement and heritage communication. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This work presents a methodology for designing online web presentations reusing a large scale, interactive and immersive VR installation by mapping assets as well as interactions to a low capability environment. With the emergence of WebGL plugin-free interactive 3D graphics inside limited information processing environments, e.g. browser technologies, becomes reality. However, macro VR worlds typically use large or even out-of-core data sets in order to produce and communicate scientifically relevant content. The major challenge still remains on how we can redesign and optimize applications that have been planned for macro VR worlds and map those to adequate concepts of micro scale worlds. We showcase this in the area of virtual archaeology for the online virtual museum of "Villa Di Livia", part of the bigger project "Flaminia Reloaded", in which several limitations could become crucial. The elaborated workflow could easily be adopted by other VMs and assist in future migrations. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The reconstruction of hv-convex binary matrices (or equivalently, binary images) from their horizontal and vertical projections is proved to be NP-hard. In this paper we take a closer look at the difficulty of the problem. We investigate different heuristic reconstruction algorithms of the class, and compare them from the viewpoint of running-time and reconstruction quality. Using a large set of test images of different sizes and with varying number of components, we show that the reconstruction quality can depend not only on the size of the image, but on the number and location of its components, too. We also reveal that the reconstruction time can also be affected by the number of the so-called switching components present in the image.

Online social networks are gaining galloping upward momentum in a quick succession ever since from their inception as they lay a sturdy platform to share the information seeping into everyone who is concerned about it. In this spirited world substantial amount of success depends on how quickly one is able to reach out to the maximum number of people. There are very few who can have paramount consideration of influence on others. Crux of the problem is to pick right people whose influence is absolute in order to diffuse the influence with minimum effort. These seeding people can in turn be used to make an upward notion in areas like politics, all types of education including health and farming, introduce a product or service in the market, to revolutionize any formal setup environment of both private and public, training employees, changes in thinking patterns of the society and its life style, to propagate superior deliberations in the minds of people and likewise. In this paper Pareto front function is used to identify the eminent leaders which is followed by the empirical analysis of the results of evolution of their influence.

Edit Propagation via Edge-Aware Filtering

This paper presents a novel framework for efficiently propagating the stroke-based user edits to the regions with similar colors and locations in high resolution images and videos. Our framework is based on the key observation that the edit propagation intrinsically can also be achieved by utilizing recently proposed edge-preserving filters. Therefore, instead of adopting the traditional global optimization which may involve a time-consuming solution, our algorithm propagates edits with the aid of the edge-preserve filters. Such a propagation scheme has low computational complexity and supports multiple kinds of strokes for more flexible user interactions. Further, our method can be easily and efficiently implemented in GPU. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and user-friendliness of our approach.

The federated Kalman filter embodies an efficient and easy-to-implement solution for linear distributed estimation problems. Data from independent sensors can be processed locally and in parallel on different nodes without running the risk of erroneously ignoring possible dependencies. The underlying idea is to counteract the common process noise issue by inflating the joint process noise matrix. In this paper, the same trick is generalized to nonlinear models and non-Gaussian process noise. The probability density of the joint process noise is split into an exponential mixture of transition densities. By this means, the process noise is modeled to independently affect the local system models. The estimation results provided by the sensor devices can then be fused, just as if they were indeed independent.

In many biomedical applications, it is often desired to simulate, analyse and visualise the dynamics of a particular patient based on a patient-specific musculoskeletal model. However, reconstructing a patient-specific model directly from medical images is highly labour intensive, and impractical in the clinical context. A more efficient method is to derive it from an atlas musculoskeletal model using patient-specific hints. In this paper, Laplacian mesh processing is introduced to deform an atlas model to a patient-specific model, based on patient-specific landmarks extracted from two orthogonal clinical images and using least-squares error optimization. Muscle attachment landmarks and motion landmarks in the atlas are also transformed as part of the process. Drift and inter-surface penetrations are prevented by supplementary inter-surface landmarks. Mesh simplification and reconstruction are used to avoid out-of-memory failures that may result from trying to deform models at high resolution.

In this paper, a legible method for ultrasonic image is constructed and it can be effective to suppress the noise and improve the images quality. Dynamic persistence technology based on temporal multi-frames is utilized to smooth the electronics noise and even lower speckle artifact. To reduce computing complexity, a sum table method and conjugate direction search approaches are applied to speed up estimation of motion vector. The guided image filter strategy is used to enhance the contrast and detail resolution for the processed image by persistence. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective to smooth noise and enhance contrast of ultrasound image in vivo.
