In composite document image, handwritten and printed text is often found to be overlapped with printed lines. The problem becomes critical for obscure and broken lines at multiple positions. Consequently, line removal is unavoidable pre-processing stage in the development of robust object recognizers. Moreover, the restoration of the handwritten area after removal of lines still persists to be a problem of interest. This paper presents a new approach to detect and remove unwanted printed line inherited in the text image at any position without characters distortion to avoid restoration stage. The proposed technique is based on connected component analysis. Experiment is conducted using single line images that scanned and extracted manually from several documents and forms. It is demonstrated that our approach is equally suitable to deal with line removal in printed and handwritten text written in any language circumvent restoration stage.

Amongst all atmospheric phenomena, rain is probably the most commonly used effect to create realistic immersive virtual environments, and to set the mood in movie storytelling. Although not immediately obvious, the beauty of rain emanates from the interplay of the involved light-matter interaction, generating effects of refraction and reflection, coupled with scattering effects. At the core, rain consists of water droplets under the influence of gravity. Current state of the art methods of generating rain are either computationally burdening, or not realistic enough. The key idea we introduce in this paper is to consider these droplets as transparent objects in the environment matting (EM) framework. This enables careful preprocessing to discover the light transport phenomena. We end up with a free-viewpoint real-time technique of simulating realistic droplets and rain in novel environments.

Texture synthesis and morphing are importam techniques for efficiently creating realistic textures used in scientific and entertainment applications. In this paper we present a novel fast algorithm for multi-dimensional texture synthesis and morphing that is especially suitable for parallel architectures such as GPUs or direct volume rendering (DVR) hardware. Our proposed solution generalizes the synthesis process to support higher than three-dimensional synthesis and morphing. We introduce several improvements to previous 2D synthesis algorithms, such as new appearance space attributes and an improved jitter function. We then modify the synthesis algorithm to use it for texture morphing which can be applied to arbitrary many 2D input textures and can be spatially controlled using weight maps. Our results suggest that the algorithm producçs higher quality textures than alternative algorithms with similar speed. Compared to higher quality texture synthesis algorithms, our solution is considerablly faster and allows the synthesis of additional channels without affect-ing the running time of the synthesis at all. The method is easily extended to allow fast 3D synthesis and as another novel contribution we show several examples for morphed solid 3D textures. Overall the presented technique provides an excellent trade-off between speed and quality, is highly flexible, allows the use of arbi-trary channels such as transparencies and displacement maps, can be extended to arbitrary dimensions and is suitable for a GPU-implementation.
