Structured data including sets, sequences, trees and graphs, pose significant challenges to fundamental aspects of data management such as efficient storage, indexing, and similarity search. With the fast accumulation of graph databases, similarity search in graph databases has emerged as an important research topic. Graph similarity search has applications in a wide range of domains including cheminformatics, bioinformatics, sensor network management, social network management, and XML documents, among others. Most of the current graph indexing methods focus on subgraph query processing, i.e. determining the set of database graphs that contains the query graph and hence do not directly support similarity search. In data mining and machine learning, various graph kernel functions have been designed to capture the intrinsic similarity of graphs. Though successful in constructing accurate predictive and classification models for supervised learning, graph kernel functions have (i) high computational complexity and (ii) non-trivial difficulty to be indexed in a graph database. Our objective is to bridge graph kernel function and similarity search in graph databases by proposing (i) a novel kernel-based similarity measurement and (ii) an efficient indexing structure for graph data management. Our method of similarity measurement builds upon local features extracted from each node and their neighboring nodes in graphs. A hash table is utilized to support efficient storage and fast search of the extracted local features. Using the hash table, a graph kernel function is defined to capture the intrinsic similarity of graphs and for fast similarity query processing. We have implemented our method, which we have named G-hash, and have demonstrated its utility on large chemical graph databases. Virtual neuron is tool that able to provide an extensive neuron cell visualizing and lab-experimenting experience. Its development requires combination efforts of informatics and neurosciences in order to create data acquisition, databasing and computational tool. The requirement to reconstruct neuron model towards greater realism still remains as an essential challenge in biological computing and visualization as to provide abroad appearance of neuron knowledge distribution. This paper enlightens on the ability of computational neuronal modeling as a powerful tool for exploring greater understanding in neuron's developmental processes and structure-function relationships. By this finding, we proposed a design consideration that believes can generate a neuron model with successful and equivalent as per available neuron biological form requirement based on validation from existing neuron visualization. In this proposal, we apply the reconstruction model in generating virtual neuronal morphology integrated with Gouraud shading technique to perform smooth lighting on visualization surface presentation.

In this paper, we present a very high-capacity and low-distortion 3D steganography scheme. Our steganography approach is based on a novel multi-layered embedding scheme to hide secret messages in the vertices of 3D polygon models. Experimental results show that the cover model distortion is very small as the number of hiding layers ranges from 7 to 13 layers. To the best of our knowledge, this novel approach can provide much higher hiding capacity than other state-of-the-art approaches, while obeying the low distortion and security basic requirements for steganography on 3D models. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper we propose the Arch-Explore user interface, which supports natural exploration of architectural 3D models at different scales in a real walking virtual reality (VR) environment such as head-mounted display (HMD) or CAVE setups. We discuss in detail how user movements can be transferred to the virtual world to enable walking through virtual indoor environments. To overcome the limited interaction space in small VR laboratory setups, we have implemented redirected walking techniques to support natural exploration of comparably large-scale virtual models. Furthermore, the concept of virtual portals provides a means to cover long distances intuitively within architectural models. We describe the software and hardware setup and discuss benefits of Arch-Explore.

Texture synthesis and morphing are important techniques for efficiently creating realistic and visually attractive textures. A popular class of synthesis algorithm are pixel-based techniques, which search in a given 2D exemplar for a pixel with a similar neighbourhood to the pixel currently being generated. The methods have the advantage that they are fast, they can be easily generalised to higher dimensions, and synthesised textures can be represented as references to the exemplar which allows definition of additional channels, such as displacement maps, at no additional cost. The quality of pixel-based techniques depends on the metric used to compare pixel neighbourhoods. Lefebvre and Hoppe introduced the term appearance space for measures describing pixel neighbourhood similarity. In this paper we introduce new appearance space attributes and evaluate them and existing attributes for texture synthesis and morphing. Our results show that our proposed gradient estimate significantly improves synthesis and morphing quality with little additional cost.

Animated models are essential for simulations and virtual worlds. In many applications approximate models are sufficient and an efficient model creation and animation suitable for untrained users is required. Sketch-based modelling has been shown to be a suitable interface for creating such models because the underlying pen-and-paper metaphor is intuitive and effective. However, there is no similarly easy process for animating these models. In this paper we present an automatic skeletalisation and rigging algorithm for sketch-based models. Our algorithm analyses sketched contours and creates fully automatically a hierarchical skeleton with joints. The surface mesh is bound to the curved skeleton bones using skinning techniques and the resulting model can be animated using skeletal animation techniques. Our analysis and user evaluation suggests that the joints placements are perceived as natural. The models can be animated using traditional skeletal animation techniques such as key-framing and motion capturing, or can be used as input to physically-based animation techniques and evolutionary algorithms.

In this article we evaluate the use of approximate visibility for efficient global illumination. Traditionally, accurate visibility is used in light transport. However, the indirect illumination we perceive on a daily basis is rarely of high-frequency nature, as the most significant aspect of light transport in real-world scenes is diffuse, and thus displays a smooth gradation. This raises the question of whether accurate visibility is perceptually necessary in this case. To answer this question, we conduct a psychophysical study on the perceptual influence of approximate visibility on indirect illumination. This study reveals that accurate visibility is not required and that certain approximations may be introduced. © 2009 ACM.

This paper intends to show the importance of haptic vibration to support emotional expression of avatar in virtual reality systems. As we know emotional avatar plays a vital role to improve the degree of realism in virtual reality. Current practice in virtual reality still lack of interactivity and immersiveness. In this research, we aim to create a realistic avatar based on haptic tactile frequency. The created avatar will be equipped with some intelligence and emotional features in order to support the interactive communication in virtual reality. Using several level of emotion strengths, the created avatar are ask to communicate their emotion through tactile frequency and operated synchronously with the avatar facial expression, acoustic representation and action-reaction between avatars. Several experiments have been conducted based on particular frequencies of haptic tactile to show the visibility of haptic emotional avatar expression. The results proved that the use of several levels of emotion strengths is able to create very realistic avatar expression.

In the near future mobile robots accomplishing such tasks as delivery of goods, assistance for handicapped people and surveillance will become increasingly available. The aim of this paper is to show the disparity that exists at present in modeling buildings for the purposes of two domains: Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) and Mobile Robotics (MR). Digital product and process models developed in the AEC-domain give the user a comprehensive insight into the components and functions of the building but they neglect the needs of mobile robot operating autonomously inside the building. On the other hand, researchers in the MR-domain seem to be unaware of the results achieved in the AEC area. During the last decades the main effort in MR was devoted to the autonomous navigation. This resulted in efficient and robust procedures of acquiring floor maps from sensor readings. Further progress requires the robot to understand semantics of the surrounding world. Based on our previous research in the graph-oriented support of the AEC-design, we propose a digital model of the building that will enable the robot to recognize the functionality of particular spaces, to transform CAD-based floor plans into graphs reflecting topology and function of the building, to plan the execution of tasks posed by the human operator and to navigate inside the building. © 2009 ASCE.

In composite document image, handwritten and printed text is often found to be overlapped with printed lines. The problem becomes critical for obscure and broken lines at multiple positions. Consequently, line removal is unavoidable pre-processing stage in the development of robust object recognizers. Moreover, the restoration of the handwritten area after removal of lines still persists to be a problem of interest. This paper presents a new approach to detect and remove unwanted printed line inherited in the text image at any position without characters distortion to avoid restoration stage. The proposed technique is based on connected component analysis. Experiment is conducted using single line images that scanned and extracted manually from several documents and forms. It is demonstrated that our approach is equally suitable to deal with line removal in printed and handwritten text written in any language circumvent restoration stage.
