The direct connection of application logic to network logic allows parallel applications to better leverage the network resources. We present a hardware description language message passing application programming interface (HDL MP API) for FPGAs. This allows an application to operate both local and network resources in a uniform, scalable and portable manner, independent of the interconnect. We use the message passing communication paradigm with all necessary communication operations performed by dedicated control hardware, independently of the interconnect. Ethernet has been used as the interconnect to demonstrate the HDL MP API functionality for this proof of concept system. Parallel linear array matrix multiplication has been implemented and tested using the HDL MP API. This application demonstrates the scalability provided by the HDL MP API.

We study two methods of micrograph processing in cryo- electron microscopy: the defocus-gradient corrected back- projection algorithm and the correction of micrographs for the contrast transfer function based on the frequency-distance relation. Analyzing integral images produced by the methods we conclude that they are asymptotically equivalent within the framework of stationary phase approximation.

Classifying chemical compounds is an active topic in drug design and other cheminformatics applications. Graphs are general tools for organizing information from heterogeneous sources and have been applied in modelling many kinds of biological data. With the fast accumulation of chemical structure data, building highly accurate predictive models for chemical graphs emerges as a new challenge . In this paper, we demonstrate a novel technique called Graph Pattern Matching kernel (GPM). Our idea is to leverage existing frequent pattern discovery methods and explore their application to kernel classifiers (e.g. support vector machine) for graph classification. In our method, we first identify all frequent patterns from a graph database. We then map subgraphs to graphs in the database and use a diffusion process to label nodes in the graphs. Finally the kernel is computed using a set matching algorithm. We performed experiments on 16 chemical structure data sets and have compared our methods to other major graph kernels. The experimental results demonstrate excellent performance of our method.

Traveling through immersive virtual environments (IVEs) by means of real walking is an important activity to increase naturalness of VR-based interaction. However, the size of the virtual world often exceeds the size of the tracked space so that a straightforward implementation of omni-directional and unlimited walking is not possible. Redirected walking is one concept to solve this problem of walking in IVEs by inconspicuously guiding the user on a physical path that may differ from the path the user visually perceives. When the user approaches a virtual object she can be redirected to a real proxy object that is registered to the virtual counterpart and provides passive haptic feedback. In such passive haptic environments, any number of virtual objects can be mapped to proxy objects having similar haptic properties, e.g., size, shape and texture. The user can sense a virtual object by touching its real world counterpart. Redirecting a user to a registered proxy object makes it necessary to predict the user's intended position in the IVE. Based on this target position we determine a path through the physical space such that the user is guided to the registered proxy object. We present a taxonomy of possible redirection techniques that enable user guidance such that inconsistencies between visual and proprioceptive stimuli are imperceptible. We describe how a user's target in the virtual world can be predicted reliably and how a corresponding real-world path to the registered proxy object can be derived.

The measurement of affect in HCI research is a challenging and complex issue. Although a number of techniques for measuring affect have been developed, a systematic discussion of their effectiveness and applicability in different contexts remains lacking, especially in social contexts with multiple users. As computing shifts to increasingly collaborative and ubiquitous models, it is important to discuss affect measurement beyond the individual level. This workshop will provide a forum where designers, practitioners, and researchers can 1) introduce novel methods of affect measurement that go beyond physiological and self-report measures, 2) advance our understanding of existing measurement methods and how they can be expanded, and 3) critically evaluate issues of affect measurement.

This paper introduces techniques for the exploration of images augmented with additional information. We present the so-called meta-previewer and propose the cascading-views which are widgets that can assist the end-user in interactively exploring metadata embedded in augmented images. In this regard, the term Interactive Images (Sonnet et al., 2008) will refer to those augmented images which allow the end-user to request further information which is in relation to the entire image or parts of it. Using our tools, data exploration process is accomplished following three steps: (i) getting an overview of the image regions that contain additional information, (ii) requesting and displaying the additional information which is of interest, and (iii) diving into that additional information to get even more information linked with it.

In an effort to develop a tool for automatic ontology building from Malay text based on formal concept analysis, an effective natural language processing (NLP) tool as the pre-processing components is needed. The goal of the study is to investigate whether existing Malay NLP tools can be a viable component to be part of the ontology learning tool. This paper discusses the outcome of the study on three NLP applications. The annotated corpus approach was adopted in this study as deemed suitable for exploratory research. Using the metrics relative subject recall and precision, the results obtained show that statistical modeling technique outperformed pola grammar technique.

Historically, the ACM Multimedia Conference is split into a "technical" program and an "arts" program. These programs sometimes seem completely separate from one another, victims of a "semantic gap" between disciplines. The goal of this panel is to create a space in which scientists learn from artists, and arts from science. We need to discover new connections between modalities of research. In order to create the most exciting and powerful future forms of interactive multimedia systems, the ones that will create the most beneficial broader impact on humanity, we need to foster new collaborations between artists and scientists. This panel seeks to bridge the great divide of language and communities that has fragmented us, creating a new space for developing connections between the arts and sciences of multimedia research, as embodied through the artists and scientists of ACM Multimedia. The goal is to make this conference a premier site for catalyzing emergent connections. Among the ancient Greeks, the techne, which included the sciences, were based in the arts. Our modes of knowledge production have since separated and grown alienated. "What weird stuff are those people doing?" To bridge the divide, we must understand and acknowledge differences, and use this as a basis for discovering common ground. In the sciences, knowledge is constructed empirically, through hypotheses and validations. Aesthetics and concepts play essential roles in how works of art are formulated to stimulate experiences. Where do these aims intersect and how might they inform each other? In this conference, one track develops pattern recognition methods for content analysis and retrieval. Another develops network and system techniques. Applications invoke these methods in usable systems. Human-centered multimedia serves as a bridge connecting human experiences with algorithmic methods. Delay-tolerant networking (DTN) is an architecture to enable data communications between isolated or remote regions, where long delays and intermittent connectivity can be tolerated. An emerging class of DTN, called vehicular DTNs (VDTN), exploits transportation systems as the transport layer to transfer data. In these networks, vehicles (e.g., busses, boats, trains) act as mobile nodes and carry data messages around. Mobile nodes can exchange data messages using devices called relay nodes. Relay nodes, placed in strategic positions along vehicle routes, have the capability to download, store, and upload the data messages from/to the mobile nodes. An important issue in VDTN is the optimal placement of the relay nodes such that delay-tolerant connectivity in VDTN is ensured at minimum cost. In this paper we show that the problem of optimal relay node placement is an NP-hard problem. Other contributions of this paper are the formulation of the relay node placement problem using ILP and the proposal of heuristic algorithms solving the optimization problem. Using simulation results, we compare the performance of each algorithm under different network constraints, such as node storage capability and network topology.

Feature-based flow visualization is naturally dependent on feature extraction. To extract flow features, often higher-order properties of the flow data are used such as the Jacobian or curvature properties, implicitly describing the flow features in terms of their inherent flow characteristics (e.g., collinear flow and vorticity vectors). In this paper we present recent research which leads to the (not really surprising) conclusion that feature extraction algorithms need to be extended to a time-dependent analysis framework (in terms of time derivatives) when dealing with unsteady flow data. Accordingly, we present two extensions of the parallel vectors based vortex extraction criteria to the time-dependent domain and show the improvements of feature-based flow visualization in comparison to the steady versions of this extraction algorithm both in the context of a high-resolution dataset, i.e., a simulation specifically designed to evaluate our new approach, as well as for a real-world dataset from a concrete application. © 2006 IEEE.
