With the increasing availability of high-performance massively parallel computer systems, the prevalence of sophisticated scientific simulation has grown rapidly. The complexity of the scientific models being simulated has also evolved, leading to a variety of coupled multi-physics simulation codes. Such cooperating parallel programs require fundamentally new interaction capabilities, to efficiently exchange parallel data structures and collectively invoke methods across programs. So-called "M×N" research, as part of the Common Component Architecture (CCA) effort, addresses these special and challenging needs, to provide generalized interfaces and tools that support flexible parallel data redistribution and parallel remote method invocation. Using this technology, distinct simulation codes with disparate distributed data decompositions can work together to achieve greater scientific discoveries.

In this paper, we present some qualitative experiments that have been conducted with a sparse compiler. This compiler can automatically transform a program operating on two-dimensional arrays into semantically equivalent code that operates on sparse storage schemes. Automatic exploitation of sparsity to reduce the storage requirements and computational time of the original program substantially reduces the complexity of developing and maintaining the program and provides more opportunities for parallelization. The experiments indicate that, in many cases, a sparse compiler is capable of transforming a dense implementation of an algorithm into efficient sparse code.

Self-propagating computer worms have been terrorizing the Internet for the last several years. With the increasing density, inter-connectivity and bandwidth of the Internet combined with security measures that inadequately scale, worms will continue to plague the Internet community. Existing anti-virus and intrusion detection systems are clearly inadequate to defend against many recent fast-spreading worms. In this paper we explore an active counter-attack method - anti-worms. We propose a method that transforms a malicious worm into an anti-worm which disinfects its original. The method is evaluated using the CodeRed, Blaster and Slammer worms. We show through simulation the effectiveness of an anti-worm with several propagation schemes and its impact on the overall network. We also discuss important limitations of the proposed method.
