Network robustness is critical for various industrial and social networks against malicious attacks, which has various meanings in different research contexts and here it refers to the ability of a network to sustain its functionality when a fraction of the network fail to work due to attacks. The rapid development of complex networks research indicates special interest and great concern about the network robustness, which is essential for further analyzing and optimizing network structures towards engineering applications. This comprehensive survey distills the important findings and developments of network robustness research, focusing on the a posteriori structural robustness measures for single-layer static networks. Specifically, the a posteriori robustness measures are reviewed from four perspectives: 1) network functionality, including connectivity, controllability and communication ability, as well as their extensions;2) malicious attacks, including conventional and computation-based attack strategies;3) robustness estimation methods using either analytical approximation or machine learning-based prediction;4) network robustness optimization. Based on the existing measures, a practical threshold of network destruction is introduced, with the suggestion that network robustness should be measured only before reaching the threshold of destruction. Then, a posteriori and a priori measures are compared experimentally, revealing the advantages of the a posteriori measures. Finally, prospective research directions with respect to a posteriori robustness measures are recommended. © 2023, CC BY.

The Industrial Internet of Things or Industry 4.0 efficiently enhances the manufacturing process in terms of raising productivity, system performance, cost reduction, and building large-scale systems. It enables the connection of numerous heterogeneous devices and sensors into the internet network through the utilization of revolutionary techniques that transfer the manufacturing paradigm to intelligent processes. The traditional industrial internet of things adopts centralized architectures and complex encryption algorithms that suffer from several cyber-security threats and lead to data leakage, privacy disclosure, and high computational and communicational costs. In our work, we proposed a decentralized, efficient, low-power, scalable, secure, privacy-preserving, and trusting architecture based on a private blockchain network/smart contract and interplanetary file system technology for the Al-NajafyIraq oil refinery factory. That enables autonomous working and provides a high level of security authentication and privacy preservation, P2P communication, remote access, immutability and information backtracking. Traditional blockchain technology has storage limitation issues, most recent works adopted external servers or the cloud for storage purposes. Our proposed scheme addresses the limitations of blockchain data storage by adopting an interplanetary file system (IPFS) network;provides an efficient data encryption mechanism at the perceptual layer by adopting a lightweight encryption algorithm, high-performance, and ultra-low-power consumption ARM Cortex-M microcontroller. In addition, our architecture succeeds in merging blockchain technology, IoTs, and an IPFS with the oil refinery as an industrial application area. Moreover, it provides an efficient framework that resists common cyber-security attacks and realizes cyber-security requirements represented by data availability, integrity, and confidentiality. © 2022 IEEE.

Set-based Scheduling for Highway Entry of Autonomous Vehicles ⁎

This paper proposes a framework for generation of collision-free reference trajectories in a cooperative multi-agent setting. The approach is hierarchical: a high-level controller schedules groups of cooperating agents, for which trajectories are then determined by a lower-level trajectory planner. Admissible behaviors of a cooperative group are encoded by so-called maneuvers, which are modeled by hybrid automata. This allows to plan trajectories by solving hybrid optimal control problems. controllable sets characterize the solution sets of these problems and are used for quick assessment of feasibility prior to planning. This enables the high-level controller to quickly assess the feasibility of different maneuver options and cooperative groups. Special emphasis is put on safety and feasibility of the framework. The efficacy of the approach is demonstrated by simulation of a highway entry scenario for autonomous vehicles.

Generalized Multi-kernel Maximum Correntropy Kalman Filter for Disturbance Estimation

Disturbance observers have been attracting continuing research efforts and are widely used in many applications. Among them, the Kalman filter-based disturbance observer is an attractive one since it estimates both the state and the disturbance simultaneously, and is optimal for a linear system with Gaussian noises. Unfortunately, The noise in the disturbance channel typically exhibits a heavy-tailed distribution because the nominal disturbance dynamics usually do not align with the practical ones. To handle this issue, we propose a generalized multi-kernel maximum correntropy Kalman filter for disturbance estimation, which is less conservative by adopting different kernel bandwidths for different channels and exhibits excellent performance both with and without external disturbance. The convergence of the fixed point iteration and the complexity of the proposed algorithm are given. Simulations on a robotic manipulator reveal that the proposed algorithm is very efficient in disturbance estimation with moderate algorithm complexity. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. On the convergence of step decay step-size for stochastic optimization

The convergence of stochastic gradient descent is highly dependent on the step-size, especially on non-convex problems such as neural network training. Step decay step-size schedules (constant and then cut) are widely used in practice because of their excellent convergence and generalization qualities, but their theoretical properties are not yet well understood. We provide the convergence results for step decay in the non-convex regime, ensuring that the gradient norm vanishes at an (Formula presented) rate. We also provide the convergence guarantees for general (possibly non-smooth) convex problems, ensuring an (Formula presented) convergence rate. Finally, in the strongly convex case, we establish an (Formula presented) rate for smooth problems, which we also prove to be tight, and an (Formula presented) rate without the smoothness assumption. We model a platooning system including trucks and a third-party service provider that performs platoon coordination, distributes the platooning profit within platoons, and charges the trucks in exchange for its services. This paper studies one class of pricing rules, where the third-party service provider keeps part of the platooning profit each time a platoon is formed. Furthermore, we propose a platoon coordination solution based on distributed model predictive control in which the pricing rule is integrated. To evaluate the effect of the pricing on the platooning system, we perform a simulation over the Swedish road network. The simulation shows that the platooning rate and profit highly depend on the pricing. This suggests that pricing needs to be set carefully to obtain a satisfactory platooning system in the future.

Due to the light absorption and scattering induced by the water medium, underwater images usually suffer from some degradation problems, such as low contrast, color distortion, and blurring details, which aggravate the difficulty of downstream underwater understanding tasks. Therefore, how to obtain clear and visually pleasant images has become a common concern of people, and the task of underwater image enhancement (UIE) has also emerged as the times require. Among existing UIE methods, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) based methods perform well in visual aesthetics, while the physical model-based methods have better scene adaptability. Inheriting the advantages of the above two types of models, we propose a physical model-guided GAN model for UIE in this paper, referred to as PUGAN. The entire network is under the GAN architecture. On the one hand, we design a Parameters Estimation subnetwork (Par-subnet) to learn the parameters for physical model inversion, and use the generated color enhancement image as auxiliary information for the Two-Stream Interaction Enhancement subnetwork (TSIE-subnet). Meanwhile, we design a Degradation Quantization (DQ) module in TSIE-subnet to quantize scene degradation, thereby achieving reinforcing enhancement of key regions. On the other hand, we design the Dual-Discriminators for the style-content adversarial constraint, promoting the authenticity and visual aesthetics of the results. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that our PUGAN outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both qualitative and quantitative metrics. The article puts focus on the the problem of performance assessment for UAV formation with leader-following structure and switching communication topology in the presence of unknown exogenous perturbations. First, two time-varying indicators are devised on the basis of the regulated outputs of the followers. Then, a trainable performance assessment model is constructed by means of belief rule base expert system (BRB) with the two time-varying indicators as the inputs and the assessment utility as the final output. At last, relevant simulation experiments are conducted to validate the practicability of the established performance assessment model for leader-following UAV formation subject to switching communication topology and unknown external perturbations.

Smart manufacturing systems combine collaborative and autonomous control systems to provide optimal performance and respond to volatile demands. A key component of smart manufacturing is material management, as raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished products must be transported to the right location at the right time. However, during the production phase, it is imperative to establish an optimal traffic control scheme in order to avoid congestion and optimize material flow. This paper proposes a platooning-based control procedure implemented in a virtual agent-based manufacturing environment to increase the material flow efficiency on a manufacturing shop floor. An analysis of the production makespan and an indicator of the level of congestion in the material handling system was conducted in order to determine productivity improvements. An agent-based simulation is used to test the effectiveness of the novel platooning approach versus a traditional basic approach. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) reveals that the inclusion of a platoon-based procedure improves production performance and reduces congestion risks.

This paper presents two computationally efficient algorithms for the orientation estimation of inertial measurement units (IMUs): the multi-kernel correntropy-based gradient descent (CGD) and the multi-kernel correntropy-based decoupled orientation estimation (CDOE). Traditional methods, such as gradient descent (GD) and decoupled orientation estimation (DOE), rely on the least square (LS) criterion in algorithm derivation, making them vulnerable to external acceleration and magnetic interference. To address this issue, we first demonstrate that the multi-kernel correntropy loss (MKCL) is an optimal objective function under the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) framework when the noise follows a specific type of heavy-tailed distribution. Then, we provide some important properties of the MKCL as a cost function. By replacing the LS cost with the MKCL, we develop the CGD and CDOE algorithms. We evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed methods by comparing them with existing algorithms in various situations. Experimental results indicate that our proposed methods (CGD and CDOE) outperform their conventional counterparts (GD and DOE), especially when faced with external acceleration and magnetic disturbances. Furthermore, the new algorithms demonstrate significantly lower computational complexity than Kalman filter-based approaches, making them suitable for applications with low-cost microprocessors.
