This paper investigates the robustness and optimality of the multi-kernel correntropy (MKC) on linear regression. We first derive an upper error bound for a scalar regression problem in the presence of arbitrarily large outliers and state that the kernel bandwidth plays an important role in minimizing the lowest upper error bound. Then, we find that the proposed MKC is related to a specific heavy-tail distribution, where its head shape is consistent with the Gaussian distribution but its tail shape is heavy-tailed, and the extent of heavy-tail is controlled by the kernel bandwidth. It becomes a Gaussian distribution when the bandwidth is infinite, which allows one to tackle both Gaussian and non-Gaussian problems without explicitly investigating the noise distributions. To explore the optimal underlying distribution parameters, an expectation-maximization-like (EM) algorithm is developed to estimate the parameter vectors and the distribution parameters in an alternating manner. The results show that our algorithm can achieve equivalent performance compared with the traditional linear regression under Gaussian noise, and it significantly outperforms the conventional method under heavy-tailed noise. Both numerical simulations and experiments on a magnetometer calibration application verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Note to Practitioners-The goal of this paper is to enhance the accuracy of conventional linear regression in handling outliers while maintaining its optimality under Gaussian assumptions. Our algorithm is formulated under the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) framework, assuming the regression residuals follow a type of heavy-tailed noise distribution with an extreme case of Gaussian. The degree of the heavy tail is explored alternatingly using an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm which converges very quickly. Driven by the coexisted heterogeneous communication protocols and diverse quality of service (QoS) requirements of industrial applications, time-sensitive networking (TSN) has been proposed as a promising and unified standard to provide deterministic transmission. However, the traffic scheduling of the TSN network should be orchestrated in a coordinated manner, which is challenging to respond to dynamic applications rapidly. For this, network function virtualization (NFV) has been introduced to eliminate the tight coupling between functions and devices, thus enabling a more flexible network resource allocation. However, NFV cannot be simply applied in a TSN network due to the inherent complex characteristics of TSN. To address this issue, we develop SvTI, a service function chain (SFC) driven queue injection scheme in the NFV-enabled TSN network. The basic idea of SvTI is to jointly model virtual network functions (VNFs) embedding and the TSN multi-queue characteristic by constructing an ordered augmented topology according to the SFC. Thus, the VNF embedding and TSN queue injection problem can be transformed into a shortest path routing problem. Besides, considering the QoS requirements of applications, a TSN queue-based topology division mechanism is proposed to simplify the augmented topology further and improve the algorithm efficiency. Simulation results show that our SvTI obtains a smaller graph size than other works and is more scalable.

Challenges of Trajectory Planning with Integrator Models on Curved Roads ⁎

In the context of trajectory planning for autonomous vehicles, a widely used vehicle model relies on linear integrator dynamics. We consider planning with this model type, with a focus on the requirement to account for curved road topologies. As our analysis reveals, this generally gives rise to non-convex, coupled constraints on the vehicle’s states and inputs, which impedes computationally efficient planning. We propose a method to resolve this issue by modification of the non-convex constraints. This modification is based on inner approximations of sub-level sets of nonlinear functions, which are obtained by quantifier elimination. The efficacy of the method is demonstrated in two example scenarios.

A new family of feasible methods for distributed resource allocation

Distributed resource allocation is a central task in network systems such as smart grids, water distribution networks, and urban transportation systems. When solving such problems in practice it is often important to have non-asymptotic feasibility guarantees for the iterates, since overallocation of resources easily causes systems to break down. In this paper, we develop a distributed resource reallocation algorithm where every iteration produces a feasible allocation. The algorithm is fully distributed in the sense that nodes communicate only with neighbors over a given communication network. We prove that under mild conditions the algorithm converges to a point arbitrarily close to the optimal resource allocation. Numerical experiments demonstrate the competitive practical performance of the algorithm. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

SNNs have achieved great attention in recent years as they contain neurons more like those in the brain and use spikes to encode and transmit information efficiently among neurons with lower energy consumption. A Retina-LGN-V1 structure-like spiking neuron network (RLVSL-SNN) is proposed in this paper. It is inspired by the structure of mammalian primary visual pathway, and simulates different biological structures of Retina, LGN and V1. Noise reduction circuit and light adaptation circuit are also simulated for enhancing the robustness of its extracted features. RLVSL-SNN is a bio-plausible neuron network as it has firing rates of neurons in each layer that are similar to those of biological experiments. Besides, a full-connected SNN (FC SNN) is implemented following RLVSL-SNN for classification to evaluate the extracted features. The additive spiking timing dependent plasticity (STDP) learning rules and the ANN-to-SNN conversion method are utilized to train RLVSL-SNN and FC SNN, respectively. The experiments on MNIST dataset have verified that RLVSL-SNN is comparable to AlexNet for classification by features from spikes.

In recent years, the number of car accidents has been gradually increasing. A major factor in this increase is the drowsiness of drivers. There are many image recognition research studies on drowsiness detection but tend to neglect the case of low-light conditions. This paper focuses on detecting drowsy drivers in low-light conditions. In this paper, a behavioralbased drowsy driver detection system (DDDS) was proposed. The proposed DDDS applies a preprocessing algorithm that improves illumination and then focuses on detecting the driver’s face and eyes to calculate eye blink duration. A deep neural network model was used for facial recognition, and Haar Cascade classifiers were used for eyes detection. Every single eye was based to a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model to predict its state as either ‘‘Open’’ or ‘‘Closed’’. The proposed CNN was developed using a dataset of 1452 samples and gave an accuracy of 97.92% on the testing dataset, 15% of the 1452 samples. Different case scenarios in poor light conditions were implemented to evaluate the proposed DDDS. The system was able to identify the state of the driver even in harsh and severe poor light conditions.

In this article, the observer-based H ∞ $$ {H}_{\infty } $$ proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control problem is studied for a class of singular perturbed systems with randomly switching nonlinearities. During the modeling process, a set of binary random sequences is introduced to describe the random behaviors of the nonlinear switching encountered in engineering practice. Considering the singular perturbation parameter (SPP), an observer-based H ∞ $$ {H}_{\infty } $$ PID controller is constructed for the concerned singularly perturbed systems (SPSs), where the state information is estimated. To improve communication efficiency and reduce resource waste, a dynamic event-triggered mechanism is employed during the measurement transmission. Meanwhile, an SPP-dependent Lyapunov-Krasovskii function is utilized to derive conditions under which the closed-loop system is guaranteed to be stochastically stable with the desired H ∞ $$ {H}_{\infty } $$ performance under a specified upper bound on the SPP. All the desired observer and controller gains are determined by solving a set of matrix inequalities. Finally, the effectiveness and superiority of the suggested PID control method are verified through a simulation example.

The paper describes the process of the information objects classification in e-learning systems using the mathematical background of fuzzy logic. This approach can be used to improve the process of searching and organizing information in e-learning systems. As the volume of educational materials grows, it becomes more and more difficult to find and structure information. Fuzzy logic helps to optimize the search, and the use of a neural network can correctly classify materials in e-learning systems, which increases the efficiency and accuracy of search queries.

Pyrolysis is a prominent technique to harvest energy while addressing the global waste problem. Product yield relies heavily on precise reactor temperature control in a pyrolysis process;thus, a representative mathematical model is necessary to design and evaluate the control system. Hence, this research aims to create a data-driven model of a 1 kg/h Auger-based pyrolysis (APR) plant and design a robust controller accordingly. The system is excited by using a pseudo-random binary signal (PRBS) to trigger process response and is recorded for 2 hours. Various models with different orders, such as Auto Regressive Exogeneous (ARX), Auto Regressive Moving Average Exogeneous (ARMAX), Box-Jenkins (BJ), and Output Error (OE) were created from the obtained data. The models were examined using best-fit percentage, final prediction error (FPE) and mean square error (MSE) criteria and validated using cross-correlation and auto-correlation functions. Two widely used and purpose-fit controllers, Proportional-Integral-Derivate (PID) and Model Predictive control (MPC), with output constraints, were designed and tuned for this application. Several operational scenarios were investigated, such as setpoint tracking and disturbance rejection. The best-fit models were selected and validated for TIC-3, TIC-4 and TIC-5, with 96.22%, 97.4% and 84.83% fitness criteria, respectively. Both controllers successfully satisfied all the tests with less than 2% steady-state error. However, MPC surpassed PID controllers in all aspects, such as 5-7 times faster settling time, negligible overshoot, and reduced integral absolute error (IAE) and integral square error (ISE) up to 44.75% and 5.45%, respectively. Nevertheless, MPC with input and output constraints performance pales compared to other controllers despite some adjustments with massive ISE and settling time above 3000 seconds.
