It has been previously shown that intensity and volume features of the hippocampus from MR images of the brain are useful in detecting the abnormality and consequently candidacy of the hippocampus for temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) surgery. In this paper, we have studied and compared volume and texture features of hippocampus for TLE lateralization. Volume and some features describing the intensity non-uniformities are used. We use manual segmentation of the hippocampi from T1 weighted images and map them to the FLAIR images. Wavelet features as well as mean and variance of the hippocampus intensities of the FLAIR slices are used as texture features. A dataset of 55 patients with 28 right and 27 left abnormal sides was used in the experiments. Experimental results show that the volume and intensity features are useful in determining the abnormal side

control concepts for mobile service robots are a key issue in robotic research. With the use of mobile robots in the domestic area, further challenges entail new designs facilitating efficient control concepts for fast motion with reduced computational capacity. This paper presents motion control designed for an autonomously acting two-wheel driven robot, which fits in a cuboid with 75times75times150mm. Due to the outstanding design of mechanical and electrical components, the robot is capable to perform high precision movements up to a speed of 2.5m/s, featuring a vision unit that allows a fast environment recognition interpreting current position based on an application dependent world model. Based on predictive control algorithms, trajectory tracking and point stabilization are facilitated. The use of realtime communication for all units allows fast interaction of all components exchanging information, which is indispensable for fast motion control

The overload control system of anti-warship missiles is researched. The output-redefinition technique is used to eliminate the nonminimum phase characteristics of missile overload output. In order to improve the robustness of the control system in the whole control process, an adaptive global terminal sliding mode (TSM) control method is proposed to control the missile's modified output. With this method, the system states lie in the global TSM at the onset of the motion, hence the reaching phase is removed from the control system. The adaptive controller is applied to estimate the upper bound of the lumped uncertainty. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through a simulation example

Web Services (WS) security has undergone an enormous development, as carried out by the major organizations and consortiums of the industry over the last few years. This has brought about the appearance of a huge number of WS security standards. Such a fact has made organizations remain reticent about adopting technologies based on this paradigm, due to the learning curve which is inevitable in the integration of security into their practical deployments. In this paper we present PWSSec (Process for Web Services Security), which enables the integration of a set of specific security stages into the traditional phases of WS-based systems development. PWSSec defines three stages, WSSecReq (Web Services Security Requirements), WSSecArch (Web Services Security Architecture) and WSSecTech (Web Services Security Technologies). These facilitate, respectively, the definition ofWS-specific security requirements, the development of a WS-based security architecture and the identification of the WS security standards that the security architecture must articulate in order to implement the security services. This paper presents a new, practical, and realizable methodology and scheme for an optimal hybrid tracking control problem for continuous neutral time-delay system. A continuous-time linear quadratic cost function that has a high-gain property is used for tracking control specification. Two interpolation formulas together with an extended state vector are applied to directly convert the original analog optimal tracking problem into an equivalent digital optimal regulator problem. Then, using the discrete-time optimal control theory and an indirect digital redesign technique with a predictive feature, an effective low-gain digital tracker, without losing the pre-specified high-quality performance in the continuous domain, is designed for the original analog neutral time-delay system.

Preventative diagnosis and maintenance of transformers has become more popular in recent times in order to improve the reliability of electric power systems. A number of transformers have recently been tested using Return Voltage (RV) and Dielectric Dissipation Factor (tanδ) measurements in the time and frequency domain, respectively. This paper outlines a circuit model which describes the dielectric behaviour of the transformer insulation system and has been parameterised from the frequency domain data. This model was then used to simulate RV and Polarisation-Depolarisation current (PDC) results. Some recommendations about the diagnosis of the transformers have been proposed. © Institution of Engineers.

In this paper, we discuss the relational algebra and recursive relationships between binary and ternary relationships in entity-relationship modeling. We define the interpretation of the recursive tables that can be applied to the complicated relationships having the same participating entities. We propose a new approach to modeling that is suitable for representing self-similar objects and for creating hierarchical structures. It combines methods of the set theory for the recursive relations within a single modeling paradigm, allowing users to define self-similar, partially self-similar, or hierarchical systems in a consistent and flexible manner. The use of recursive relationships in the definitions of self-similar objects yields representations that can be rendered at varying levels of detail or precision at run time.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a widely used approach to obtaining high quality medical images of the brain. Post-processing MRI images with segmentation algorithms enhances the visualization and measurement of soft tissues and lesions. Segmented brain images contain information amenable to quantitative analysis (e.g., tissue component percentage in a region of interest (ROI)) and diagnostic interpretation (e.g., total lesion volume). A number of different segmentation algorithms have been developed for this purpose. In this paper, we propose a novel automated segmentation technique, hierarchical structure weighted probabilistic neural network (HSWPNN), based on multi-scale feature extraction, hierarchical labeling structure, and a modified weighted probabilistic neural network (PNN). Compared to other clustering algorithms, our method is relatively robust to noise and accurate. We compare our results to a model of ground truth.

This paper deals with modeling and analysis for the landing motion of a human-body model. First, the dynamic model of a floating human body and the impact model are derived and the external impulse exerted on the ground as well as the internal impulse experienced at the joints of the human body model are investigated. Second, a motion planning algorithm exploiting the kinematic redundancy is suggested to ensure stability in terms of ZMP stability condition during a series of landing phases. Four phases of landing motion are investigated. In simulation, the external and internal impulses experienced at the human joints and the ZMP history resulting from the motion planning are analyzed for two different configurations. A desired landing posture is suggested by comparison of the simulation results.
