Kitano's approach to neural network design is extended in the sense that not just the neural network structure, but also the values of the weights are coded in the chromosome. Experimental results are presented demonstrating the capability of the technique in the solution of a standard test problem.

Because of its capability of high-speed search, the associative memory (CAM) is expected to be used in a variety of information processing systems. In this paper, novel fault-tolerant techniques which are effective for on-line use are proposed for TLB which is an example of the application of CAM. First, fault and error models of the TLB consisting of the CAM part and the SRAM part are clarified. Then, the fault-tolerant techniques for these faults and errors, such as distance separable technique, cod-ing technique, simplified 1-out-of-n check and graceful degradation, are proposed. The distance separable technique which encodes the data stored in the CAM part is the one which masks the faulty CAM part and prevents errors from propagating to the subsequent circuits. The coding technique checks the one-to-one correspondence between the data in the CAM and those in SRAM by using the SEC-DED code with byte error detection capability, i.e., SEC-DED-SbED code, and at the same time it detects and corrects errors in the data stored in SRAM. The simplified 1-out-of-n check processes association errors. The graceful degradation gives a flag in the faulty memory section and prevents it from being used. The methods proposed in this paper are evaluated from area augmentation and error detection capability perspectives. The results show that the fault-tolerant TLB with 32 virtual address bits, 32 physical address bits and 128 entries gives single fault detection probability of nearly 99 percent with 28 percent area increase.

Iterative least-squares estimation requires accurate reflectance models to retrieve geometrical parameters of 3-D objects from an image projection. We investigate the use of separating the diffuse (body) reflection from the specular (surface) reflection, where the latter is responsible for image highlights. The performance of several models has been analysed by comparing local higher-order derivatives of the least-squares error function. Experiments show that the (smooth) diffuse component yields the best convergence properties, while the (sharp) specular component cast be utilized to improve noise insensitivity.

This paper reports the application of evolutionary computation in the automatic generation of a neural network architecture. It is a usual practice to use trial and error to find a suitable neural network architecture. This is not only time consuming but may not generate an optimal solution for a given problem. The use of evolutionary computation is a step towards automation in architecture generation. In this paper a brief introduction to the field is given as well as an implementation of automatic neural network generation using genetic programming.< >

In this paper the control architecture of the PRIAMOS mobile robot system is presented. It consists of four layers which integrate reactive and reflexive components in such a way that the robot can combine fast reaction to unexpected obstacles with predictive behaviour to known components in the environment. A solution for the problem of how to combine control layers which process information on different levels of abstraction and of increasing complexity is discussed. The reflexive part of the control architecture and the modification concerning the motion controller of the mobile robot which was necessary to apply the idea of reflexive navigation is described in more detail. The architecture presented allows motion tasks to be executed in partially unknown or changing environment in an efficient manner. Especially, the time-critical reflexive level is computationally less expensive than in previous approaches.

This paper outlines some preliminary work on the stability analysis of switched and hybrid systems. The hybrid systems considered are those that combine continuous dynamics, represented by differential or difference equations, with finite dynamics usually thought of as being a finite automaton. Here, we concentrate on the continuous dynamics and model the finite dynamics as switching among finitely many continuous systems. We introduce multiple Lyapunov functions as a tool for analyzing Lyapunov stability of such "switched systems". We use iterated function systems theory as a tool for Lagrange stability. We also discuss the case where the switched systems are indexed by an arbitrary compact set.< >

This paper introduces a framework of tools which allow the design of distributed, potentially fault-tolerant, real-time control software. This framework takes a system specified in the control engineering domain and translates this application-oriented representation into a software engineering representation. From this new representation, automatic code generation tools have been developed to create a complete, executable control system implementation.< >

A simple algorithm for establishing the presence of points common to some singularity (hyper)surfaces associated to covariance matrices is developed. It allows, on the basis of the new algebraic and geometric properties recently given by Guidorzi (1994), the computation of the maximal number of linear relations that can be associated to a given set of data.
