Software effort estimation using convolutional neural network and fuzzy clustering

Adopting an efficient software process model is critical for building high-quality software applications. An important factor impacting the software development process is an accurate estimate of human effort required to complete the software project. While machine learning methods were historically used to develop estimation models, there has been little investigation into the potential of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) for improving software effort estimation. One of the biggest obstacles in using DCNN for this purpose is the common nature of software datasets, which often consist of vectorized samples rather than matrices. To defeat this obstacle and reduce vagueness in software attribute measurement, this study uses Fuzzy theory to generate an appropriate two-dimensional datapoint representation. The fuzzy clustering is commonly used to split dataset samples into separate clusters, which can help to generate Fuzzy membership functions. This approach makes it easier to generate a two-dimensional array representation for each data sample based on the membership values, allowing it to be used as input to the DCNN model. The efficiency of the proposed model was thoroughly evaluated using PROMISE benchmark datasets. The findings based on mean absolute errors and standardized accuracy show that our proposed model produced very good performance with low error rates and outperformed several current state-of-the-art effort estimation models. Nonetheless, further research is needed to determine the impact of different cluster numbers and features on the performance of our model. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the possibility for incorporating DCNN into software effort estimates and highlights the viability of utilizing fuzzy modeling and clustering techniques to enhance the data representation of software datasets. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Robust cybersecurity measures are essential to protect complex information systems from a variety of cyber threats, which requires sophisticated security solutions. This paper explores the integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) to improve cybersecurity operations within Security Operations Centers (SOCs). The proposed framework has a modular plugin architecture where Agentic AI controls the information flow, includes Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), protection methods for human-chatbot interactions and tools for managing tasks such as database interactions, code generation and execution. By utilizing these techniques, the framework aims to streamline the workflows of SOC analysts, allowing them to focus on critical tasks rather than redundant activities. The study also explores the dynamic customization of LLMs based on client data, user experience, potential risks and language preferences to ensure a user-centric approach. The results show improvements in efficiency and effectiveness and highlight the potential of LLMs in cybersecurity applications. Recent metaheuristic algorithms for medical object localization using MSER detector in computer-aided diagnosis system

Object localization is a critical task in image analysis, often facilitated by artificial intelligence techniques. While the Maximally Stable Extremal Regions (MSER) detection algorithm is a popular choice for local detection, its exhaustive approaches can be algorithmically complex and prone to suboptimal results with improper parameter selection. Various metaheuristic algorithms have been proposed for medical object localization to address this. In this context, four contributions are presented. Firstly, recent metaheuristics, including the Slime Mould Algorithm (SMA), Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), Heap-based Optimizer (HBO), and Gradient-based Optimizer (GBO), are adapted to tackle the MSER localization problem. These algorithms are rigorously evaluated across diverse medical image datasets using multiple metrics, with their performance statistically validated through the Friedman mean rank test. The second contribution introduces a novel objective function to improve the localization process. The third contribution involves a comparative analysis of the recent algorithms against seven standard metaheuristics specifically designed for MSER localization. Lastly, we present an improved computer-aided diagnosis system that integrates an SVM-based model with Local Binary Patterns (LBP) descriptors extracted from each MSER alongside DenseNet-121 features. Experimental results demonstrate that the HBO and SMA optimizers outperform conventional algorithms, showing a higher diversity, improved exploitation and exploration capabilities, a well-balanced exploration-exploitation trade-off, elevated fitness values, faster convergence speeds, and enhanced computational efficiency. Additionally, we integrate these findings into an improved computer-aided diagnosis system, yielding classification results surpassing state-of-the-art models. Low back pain is a leading cause of disability globally, is often associated with degenerative lumbar spine conditions. Accurate diagnosis of these conditions is critical but challenging due to the subjective nature of MRI interpretation and the weak correlation between imaging findings and symptoms. Thus, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of CNN-based architectures (VGG-16, EfficientNetB0, EfficientNetV2) and transformer-based architecture specifically Vision Transformers (ViT) in classifying lumbar spine conditions as normal, moderate, or severe. Using the RSNA 2024 Lumbar Spine Degenerative Classification dataset. The models are evaluated using the ROC-AUC and PRAUC as the performance metrics due to the dataset imbalance. Results indicate that EfficientNetB0 achieved the highest overall performance, with an average ROC-AUC of 0.784 and PR-AUC of 0.528, demonstrating strong adaptability to imbalanced datasets. EfficientNetV2 also performed competitively, while VGG-16 showed moderate effectiveness. The Vision Transformer (ViT), however, underperformed due to its reliance on larger datasets and challenges in capturing fine-grained spatial features. The findings highlight the potential of EfficientNet-based models for accurate and efficient lumbar spine diagnostics. This study underscores the potential of advanced deep learning approaches in improving diagnostic workflows for degenerative lumbar spine conditions. © 2025 IEEE.

Enabling high fault-tolerant embedding capability of alternating group graphs

The Hamiltonian path/cycle serves as a robust tool for transmitting messages within parallel and distributed systems. However, the prevalent device-intensive nature of these systems often leads to the occurrence of faults. Tackling the critical challenge of tolerating numerous faults when constructing Hamiltonian paths and cycles in these systems is of utmost significance. The alternating group graph AGn is a suitable interconnection network for building parallel and distributed systems due to its outstanding topological properties. Many studies have been dedicated to the fault-tolerant embedding of Hamiltonian paths and cycles in AGn, but they all fail to reach the desired level of fault-tolerance. In this paper, we aim to enhance the edge fault-tolerant embedding capability of AGn by leveraging a newly emerged fault model, called the Partitioned Edge Fault (PEF) model. We prove the existence of Hamiltonian paths/cycles tolerating large-scale edge faults in AGn under the PEF model. Additionally, we propose a fault-tolerant Hamiltonian path embedding algorithm for AGn under the PEF model and validate its effectiveness through experiments. To gauge the significance of each missed edge, we conduct experimental calculations for the average path length of every edge along the Hamiltonian path produced by the proposed embedding algorithm. Furthermore, the fault-tolerance comparison and experimental analysis reveal that our results improve the fault-tolerant embedding capability of AGn from a linear level to an exponential one. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a Hamiltonian path/cycle embedding approach is proposed and actually implemented for AGn with large-scale edge faults. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Modernization and intense industrialization have led to a substantial improvement in people’s quality of life. However, the aspiration for achieving an improved quality of life results in environmental contamination. A primary consequence of environmental degradation is air pollution, resulting from rising levels of poisonous chemicals in the atmosphere, which may induce detrimental health conditions in humans. It is harmful to both humans and agriculture. Given that the effects of air pollution on plants may not be readily apparent, it is important to analyse the necessary data and compute the outcomes. Farmers prioritise on pests and plant diseases, frequently neglecting the detrimental impacts of air pollution. Some plant species can withstand high amounts of pollution from suspended particulate matter and accumulated gases, while others are more susceptible to harm. Therefore, plants’ reaction to air pollution is influenced by the kind of harmful compounds, their levels, and the plant’s susceptibility to them. The LSTM +CNN Proposed Ensemble method may be used to analyse the impact of air pollution on agriculture by examining trends in crop production over time and predicting which crop is more resistant based on the pollution data. The initiative created for this aim may assist farmers in determining the most suitable crop to cultivate in their fields to minimize the impact of air pollution on agricultural yield. The findings show deep learning algorithms correctly predict hourly pollutant concentrations such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ground-level ozone, and particulate matter 2.5, along with the hourly Air Quality Index (AQI) for California. A proposed model used test RMSE values as a measure to evaluate prediction performance, achieving the best possible results. © 2025 SCPE.

Deep learning framework for automatic detection and classification of sleep apnea severity from polysomnography signals

Sleep apnea (SA) is a sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by breathing pauses during sleep. A person’s sleep schedule is significantly influenced by that person’s hectic lifestyle, which may include unhealthy eating habits and their line of work. Polysomnographic (PSG) sleep studies examine sleep-related disorders by recording various biosignals from the human body. However, SA classification methods could be more robust in terms of performance because they rely on feature-engineering strategies or employ a particular signal from PSG recording for diagnosis. This study aims to classify the severity of SA according to the apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) into normal, mild, and moderate-to-severe groups using oxygen saturation (SpO2), electroencephalogram (EEG), and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. The proposed deep neural network (DNN)-bidirectional long short-term memory (DNN-BiLSTM) framework addresses the issue of low detection accuracy in analysis. The DNN-BiLSTM approach employs features extracted from a multiscale dilation attention 1D convolutional neural network (MSDA-1DCNN) as input for detection and classification purposes. The MSDA-1DCNN network extracts deep features from processed SpO2, EEG, and ECG signals. The developed firefly combined electric fish optimization (FCEFO) algorithm improves performance by optimizing the hidden neuron count of the DNN and the learning rate of the BiLSTM framework. The performance measures proved the effectiveness of the model over conventional machine and deep learning approaches. With the integration of deep features, the proposed DNN-BiLSTM model provides enhanced performance in terms of accuracy and precision. This systematic review gave special attention to diabetes and the advancements in food and nutrition needed to prevent or manage diabetes in all its forms. There are two main forms of diabetes mellitus: Type 1 (T1D) and Type 2 (T2D). The loss of beta cells brought on by an autoimmune reaction causes the pancreas to be unable to produce enough insulin, which leads to Type 1 diabetes. A deficiency of insulin could arise as the illness worsens. The most frequent cause is a combination of excessive body weight and inadequate exercise. Currently, 90–95% of patients have Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Age-specific normal blood sugar ranges exist and knowing them is crucial for determining a target blood sugar level that is both healthy and appropriate. The main takeaway is that diet regimens ought to be tailored to the patient’s requirements and should account for their capacity for change. Carbohydrates are the nutrients that have the biggest impact on the rise in blood glucose. In this paper, we have proposed a novel method for glucose monitoring and diet recommendations for diabetic patients using fog computing. A paradigm known as fog computing makes use of the benefits that come from using both cloud and edge devices to support modern computing systems by offering high-quality services, cutting latency, facilitating mobility, supporting multi-tenancy, and many other features. © 2025 by Begell House, Inc.
