FERMixNet: An Occlusion Robust Facial Expression Recognition Model With Facial Mixing Augmentation and Mid-Level Representation Learning

Facial expressions can provide a better understanding of people’s mental status and attitudes towards specific things. However, facial occlusion in real world is an unfavorable phenomenon that greatly affects the performance of facial expression recognition models. Recent works addressing the occlusion problem have primarily relied on attention mechanisms or occlusion discarding methods that focus on non-occluded regions of the face. However, these methods have not achieved a good balance between occlusion robustness and model efficiency. In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient model, called FERMixNet, for occluded facial expression recognition. The model incorporates a novel facial mixing augmentation strategy (FERMix) that generates new training samples by simulating real-world facial occlusion and preserving high expression-related semantic information. By co-training the original and newly generated samples, the model’s occlusion robustness is improved without increasing its complexity during inference. Additionally, to further enhance the model’s occlusion robustness, we include mid-level representation learning in the network to learn the discriminative non-occluded local features of the samples with low computational cost. Extensive experiments on four public facial occlusion datasets: Occlusion-RAF-DB, Occlusion-FERPlus and FED-RO show that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art results which demonstrates the good robustness of our method for occluded facial expression recognition. Meanwhile, the proposed model also achieves state-of-the-art results on the in-the-wild facial expression datasets RAF-DB, AffectNet-8, and AffectNet-7. It proves that the proposed model has good application prospects in real world. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

A Hybrid Regularized Multilayer Perceptron for Input Noise Immunity

The immunity of multilayer perceptron (MLP) is less effective toward input noise. In this article, we have focused on the robustness of MLP with respect to input noise where noise can be additive or multiplicative. Here, we have proposed a DropConnect-based regularized MLP to reduce the coadaptation among the neurons of the hidden layer. At first, we have empirically and statistically shown that by reducing coadaptation among the hidden neurons, an MLP can achieve better noise immunity. We have also empirically shown that an MLP with input noise injection and $l_{2}$ regularizer is an effective approach to improve its noise immunity. However, the results indicate that it does not adjust the coadaptation among the hidden neurons. Therefore, for further improvement, we have proposed a hybrid regularized MLP (HRMLP), where DropConnect is combined with the noise injection and $l_{2}$ regularizer. In addition to input noise, we have also verified the robustness of HRMLP with respect to $\mathbf {20\%}$ outliers in the dataset. To justify the effectiveness of the proposed HRMLP, we have compared it with MLP, MLP with noise injection, MLP with $l_{2}$ regularizer, MLP with noise injection and $l_{2}$ regularizer, and MLP with DropConnect along with two state-of-the-art works based on $\mathbf {20}$ standard datasets. The experimental results for both noisy inputs and outliers confirm that the performance of HRMLP is significant compared to other methods. © 2020 IEEE.

An innovative Telugu text summarization framework using the pointer network and optimized attention layer

Summarizing lengthy text involves distilling crucial information into a concise form by covering the key events in the source text. Previous researchers mostly explored the supervised approaches for the task, but due to its strong reliance on the quality of text features, the resulting summaries often lack precision and coherence. The performance of the state-of-the-art summarizers becomes poor when applied to various Indian languages due to several challenges. The current research paper proposes a summarization approach for Telugu text based on a Pointer Network with an Optimised Attention Layer (PN-OAL). In this approach, the attention layer’s weights are adjusted using a hybrid optimization method that combines the Fusion of Coyote Optimization and Squirrel Search method (FCO-SSA). Weight optimization is conducted in order to address the goal function, which involves the maximization of the cosine similarity between the source text and the summary text. A novel loss function is incorporated within the framework of the constructed network architecture to generate a robust summary. The proposed approach is experimented with alternative baseline approaches in order to validate its efficacy for summarizing Telugu documents. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have witnessed remarkable significance in diverse sectors, ranging from environmental monitoring, infrastructure inspection, disaster response, wildlife conservation, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. It is crucial to predict their future states to enable UAVs’ safe and efficient operation in dynamic environments. UAV trajectory planning is a crucial aspect of UAV operations, as it determines how the drone will navigate, perform tasks, and avoid obstacles. UAVs can be operated with varying degrees of autonomy, and they can be controlled by humans or autonomously via onboard autopilot software. While existing research has extensively focused on trajectory planning methodologies for UAVs, there is a noticeable gap in the literature concerning the integration of predictive capabilities into trajectory planning, highlighting the need for a comprehensive review of methodologies in UAV trajectory prediction connected with the associated realm of trajectory planning. This article provides a comprehensive and comparative analysis of trajectory prediction methods tailored for autonomous UAVs. Beginning with a precise problem definition and algorithm categorization, our study delves into evaluating methodologies rooted in conventional mathematical models, classical machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning models. © 1998-2012 IEEE.

A Multi-Agent Proximal Policy Optimized Joint Mechanism in mmWave HetNets with CoMP Toward Energy Efficiency Maximization

A novel cluster-based traffic offloading and user association (UA) algorithm alongside a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based base station (BS) activation mechanism is proposed in this paper. Our design aims to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the heterogeneous network (HetNet) while maintaining high quality of service (QoS). By taking advantage of the dense deployment of BSs in a HetNet, a clustering algorithm is first proposed to facilitate traffic offloading among BSs. Then, a multi-agent proximal policy optimization (MAPPO) based DRL algorithm is employed to trigger the BS activation decision based on the current environmental condition. Finally, a UA algorithm is deployed to improve further the (normalized) data rate of all users, known as the (normalized) sum rate. Via simulation, we show that our proposed mechanism can remarkably enhance the EE and excel over the closely related mechanisms. It satisfies the required data rate, improves the sum rate, and exhibits excellent scalability when many BSs are deployed. © 2017 IEEE.

Hyperspectral Target Detection-Based 2-D-3-D Parallel Convolutional Neural Networks for Hyperspectral Image Classification

This article presents a novel hyperspectral target detection (HTD) based two-dimensional (2-D)-three-dimensional (3-D) parallel convolutional neural network (HTD 2D-3D-PCNN) model, which integrates the HTD technique to achieve outstanding performance in hyperspectral image classification. The proposed model effectively leverages both spectral and spatial information through a dual-branch architecture in hyperspectral imaging. In the first branch, HTD is utilized to enhance the spectral features of targets of interest, while suppressing background. The resulting enhanced image is then inputted to a 2D-CNN, augmented with an additional deconvolution layer to highlight spatial characteristics. Concurrently, the second branch employs dimensionality reduction via principal component analysis, and a 3D-CNN is employed to capture both spectral and spatial attributes. Subsequently, the feature maps from both convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are combined and processed through fully connected layers for classification. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed HTD-2D-3D-PCNN, extensive experiments are conducted on five widely used hyperspectral public datasets (Indian Pines, Pavia University, Salinas Scene, Kennedy Space Center, and Botswana) with a consistent training sample ratio of either 10% or 5%. The results show that HTD-2D-3D-PCNN can achieve overall accuracy values of 98.41%, 99.85%, 99.92%, 99.82%, and 98.82% for the respective datasets, surpassing the performance of recent methodologies. © 2008-2012 IEEE.

The digitization of healthcare data coupled with advances in computational capabilities has propelled the adoption of machine learning (ML) in healthcare. However, these methods can perpetuate or even exacerbate existing disparities, leading to fairness concerns such as the unequal distribution of resources and diagnostic inaccuracies among different demographic groups. Addressing these fairness problems is paramount to prevent further entrenchment of social injustices. In this survey, we analyze the intersection of fairness in ML and healthcare disparities. We adopt a framework based on the principles of distributive justice to categorize fairness concerns into two distinct classes: equal allocation and equal performance. We provide a critical review of the associated fairness metrics from a ML standpoint and examine biases and mitigation strategies across the stages of the ML lifecycle, discussing the relationship between biases and their countermeasures. The article concludes with a discussion on the pressing challenges that remain unaddressed in ensuring fairness in healthcare ML and proposes several new research directions that hold promise for developing ethical and equitable ML applications in healthcare. © 2024 IEEE.

Aggregate Plant Species Categorization with Deep CNN Based Positional Encoded Cross Attentional Mechanism

Plants plays a major role in the life of humans. It offers food, medicines, fibers, wood, spices, perfume, oil, and paper. Besides, it minimizes soil erosion and prevents air pollution. Particularly, the piper plant is used around the world for various applications. It comprises of several species, which is useful for humans in enormous ways like medicine, food, ornaments, etc. For that reason, the classification of plants is necessary to utilize the exact plants for appropriate applications. The traditional way of plant classification are time consuming, less accurate and require skilled professionals. To resolve this, several conventional researches utilized technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI) to classify plant species but lacks in few limitations such as accuracy and speed. Therefore, the proposed system employ Positional Encoded Cross Attention Mechanism-Deep Convolutional Neural Network (PECAM-DCNN) system for the classification of all plants and piper plant species. The DCNN is used for the capability of handling larger datasets and accuracy. Though, it is the effective classifier, it still have few limitations like noise, speed and over-fitting of data. To resolve this, the respective method used Adaptable normalization with positional encoded cross attention mechanism to enhance the speed, accuracy, denoise task and prevent over fitting of data. The positional encoding in the cross attentional mechanism capture significant features at abundant scales and minimize loss in spatial resolution. Further, the efficiency of the projected system is calculated using performance metrics to evaluate the efficacy of the system. Moreover, the efficiency of the proposed model is revealed through the comparative analysis of respective system with conventional methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
