Predicting Distant Metastatic Sites in Cancer Using miRNA and mRNA Expression Data

Background: Cancer patients with metastasis face a much lower survival rate and a higher risk of recurrence than those without metastasis. So far, several learning methods have been proposed to predict cancer metastasis, but most of these methods are intended to predict lymph node metastasis rather than distant metastasis. Distant metastasis is more difficult to predict than lymph node metastasis because distant metastasis is detected after a comprehensive examination of the entire body, and there are not enough publicly available tumor samples with distant metastasis that can be used for training learning methods. Predicting distant metastatic sites is even more challenging than predicting whether distant metastasis will occur or not. Methods: The problem of predicting distant metastatic sites is a multi‐class and multi‐label classification problem;there are more than two classes for distant metastatic sites (bone, brain, liver, lung, and other organs), and a single sample can have multiple labels for multiple metastatic sites. We transformed the multi‐label and multi‐class problem into multiple single‐label binary problems. For each metastatic site, we built a random forest model that deals with binary classification and linked the models along a chain. Results: Testing the model on miRNA and mRNA expression datasets of several cancer types showed a high performance in all performance measures. In the comparison of our model with other methods, our method outperformed the others. Conclusion: We developed a new method for predicting multiple metastatic sites using miRNA and mRNA expression data. The technique will be useful in predicting distant metastatic sites before distant metastasis occurs, which in turn will help clinicians determine treatment options for cancer patients. © 2025 Bentham science Publishers.

Dear Editor,The distributed constraint optimization problems(DCOPs) [1]-[3]provide an efficient model for solving the cooperative problems of multi-agent systems, which has been successfully applied to model the real-world problems like the distributed scheduling [4], sensor network management [5], [6], multi-robot coordination [7], and smart grid [8]. However, DCOPs were not well suited to solve the problems with continuous variables and constraint cost in functional form, such as the target tracking sensor orientation [9], the air and ground cooperative surveillance [10], and the sensor network coverage [11].

Counting vehicles types using deep learning algorithm in video surveillance systems

Detection, identification, and automatic counting of vehicles using video surveillance cameras plays an essential role in intelligent transportation management. Despite the progress that researchers have made in these cases, its operational implementation still faces challenges such as various environmental conditions, unbalanced data sets, accuracy, and speed. Therefore, research is fundamental in solving these issues. This research investigates the use of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for vehicle detection, classification, and counting in video surveillance applications. We analyze recent research trends and challenges, examining the suitability of popular datasets like MSCOCO, PASCAL, ImageNet, DAWN, DETRAC, and MIO-TCD for validating proposed algorithms. Our study focuses on overcoming challenges like poor lighting conditions and unbalanced traffic scenarios. We propose a novel approach for counting vehicle types based on the YOLO model. The proposed method leverages the YOLO model for object detection and recognition, the ByteTrack algorithm for tracking vehicles across frames, and the CLAHE pre-processing and the Multiple-Zone-Line approach for addressing video surveillance challenges. Experimental results on three benchmark videos demonstrate the superiority of YOLOv8 over YOLOv9 in our benchmarks. Moreover, the application of CLAHE pre-processing algorithms further enhances performance. This research offers a promising solution for accurate and robust vehicle detection, classification, and counting in real-world video surveillance scenarios. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Motion Signal-based Recognition of Human Activity from Video Stream Dataset Using Deep Learning Approach

Background: Human physical activity recognition is challenging in various research eras, such as healthcare, surveillance, senior monitoring, athletics, and rehabilitation. The use of various sensors has attracted outstanding research attention due to the implementation of machine learning and deep learning approaches. Aim: This paper proposes a unique deep learning framework based on motion signals to recognize human activity to handle these constraints and challenges through deep learning (e.g., enhance CNN, LR, RF, DT, KNN, and SVM) approaches. Method: This research article uses the BML (Biological Motion Library) dataset gathered from thirty volunteers with four various activities to analyze the performance metrics. It compares the evaluated results with existing results, which are found by machine learning and deep learning methods to identify human activity. Result: This framework was successfully investigated with the help of laboratory metrics with convolutional neural networks (CNN) and achieved 89.0% accuracy compared to machine learning methods. Conclusion: The novel work of this research is to increase classification accuracy with a lower error rate and faster execution. Moreover, it introduces a novel approach to human activity recognition in the BML dataset using the CNN with Adam optimizer approach. © 2024 Bentham science Publishers.

A Two-Level Neural-RL-Based Approach for Hierarchical Multiplayer Systems Under Mismatched Uncertainties

AI and reinforcement learning (RL) have attracted great attention in the study of multiplayer systems over the past decade. Despite the advances, most of the studies are focused on synchronized decision-making to attain Nash equilibrium, where all the players take actions simultaneously. On the other hand, however, in complex applications, certain players may have an advantage in making sequential decisions and this situation introduces a hierarchical structure and influences how other players respond. The control design for such system is challenging since it relies on solving the coupled Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The situation becomes more difficult when the learning process is exposed to complex uncertainties with unreliable data being exchanged. Therefore, in this article, we develop a new learning-based control approach for a class of nonlinear hierarchical multiplayer systems subject to mismatched uncertainties. Specifically, we first formulate this new problem as a multiplayer Stackelberg-Nash game in conjunction with the hierarchical robust-optimal transformation. Theoretical analysis confirms the equivalence of this transformation and ensures that the designed control policies can achieve stable equilibrium. Then, a two-level neural-RL-based approach is developed to automatically and adaptively learn the solutions. The stability of this online learning process is also provided. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed learning-based robust control design. © 2024 IEEE.

Occupancy Map Guided Attributes Artifacts Removal for Video-Based Point Cloud Compression

Point clouds offer realistic 3D representations of objects and scenes at the expense of large data volumes. To represent such data compactly in real-world applications, Video-Based Point Cloud Compression (V-PCC) converts their texture into 2D attributes and occupancy maps before applying lossy video compression. Unfortunately, the coding artifacts introduced in the decoded attribute maps eventually degrade the quality of the reconstructed point cloud, thereby influencing its immersive experience. This article proposes a deep learning-based attribute map enhancement method that fully leverages the occupancy map's guidance. The design philosophy is that the cross-modality guidance from occupancy can be leveraged as critical information to enhance the attribute. Therefore, instead of treating attribute and occupancy as two separate sources of signals, occupancy serves as an indispensable auxiliary, such that the proposed framework explicitly provides the model with abundant clues by conducting local feature modification and global dependencies aggregation. In particular, the proposed framework is compatible with existing V-PCC bitstreams and can be feasibly incorporated into the standardized decoder pipeline. Extensive evaluations show the effectiveness of the proposed framework in attribute enhancement, with equivalently 6.0% Bjontegaard Delta-rate (BD-rate) savings obtained. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). A new content-aware image resizing based on Rényi entropy and deep learning

One of the most popular techniques for changing the purpose of an image or resizing a digital image with content awareness is the seam-carving method. The performance of image resizing algorithms based on seam machining shows that these algorithms are highly dependent on the extraction of importance map techniques and the detection of salient objects. So far, various algorithms have been proposed to extract the importance map. In this paper, a new method based on Rényi entropy is proposed to extract the importance map. Also, a deep learning network has been used to detect salient objects. The simulator results showed that combining Rényi’s importance map with a deep network of salient object detection performed better than classical seam-carving and other extended seam-carving algorithms based on deep learning. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Informative task classification with concatenated embeddings using deep learning on crisisMMD

Disastrous situations pose a formidable challenge, testing our resilience against nature's fury and the race against time to prevent the loss of human life. It is noted that in such situations that Microblogging platforms like Twitter(now X) have proven to be an invaluable resource for citizens to share the real-time updates in their locality. Building upon this premise, we are proposing a new hybrid robust approach that integrates transfer learning with selective features from Liwc and manually engineered features to achieve state-of-the-art results on the CrisisMMD dataset on the informative task. In our innovative approach, we harnessed the power of Deep learning combined with traditional ML practices to improve the model, we utilized OpenAI embeddings and minute details from the tweets like the sentiment, text polarity, Retweet address, links included etc. We employed a dense-dropout-based concatenate model for further processing. We established baselines of each technique individually as well as commonly used techniques like Tf-Idf, BoW, Glove embeddings. Notably, our proposed model exhibits a significant accuracy improvement, achieving an accuracy of 87.93%, surpassing the highest accuracy of traditional methods of 82.93% obtained with Tf-Idf and ensemble voting. Through this work, we conclude that there is a scope of improvement in disaster-related NLP work with the introduction of transformer-based architecture and Pretrained GPT which include a massive corpus of text improving the semantic coherency which in turn lead to higher evaluation metrics. This work in future can be extended to incorporate different embeddings as well as using techniques like Multi-headed attention as well as RNNs like GST, GRU, etc. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

This article presents an in-depth exploration of the acoustofluidic capabilities of guided flexural waves(GFWs)generated by a membrane acoustic waveguide actuator(MAWA).By harnessing the potential of GFWs,cavity-agnostic advanced particle manipulation functions are achieved,unlocking new avenues for microfluidic systems and lab-on-a-chip *** localized acoustofluidic effects of GFWs arising from the evanescent nature of the acoustic fields they induce inside a liquid medium are numerically investigated to highlight their unique and promising *** traditional acoustofluidic technologies,the GFWs propagating on the MAWA’s membrane waveguide allow for cavity-agnostic particle manipulation,irrespective of the resonant properties of the fluidic ***,the acoustofluidic functions enabled by the device depend on the flexural mode populating the active region of the membrane *** demonstrations using two types of particles include in-sessile-droplet particle transport,mixing,and spatial separation based on particle diameter,along with streaming-induced counter-flow virtual channel generation in microfluidic PDMS *** experiments emphasize the versatility and potential applications of the MAWA as a microfluidic platform targeted at lab-on-a-chip development and showcase the MAWA’s compatibility with existing microfluidic systems.

A new multi-input two-output switched-source multilevel inverter based on harvest of maximum energy for photovoltaic applications

In multilevel inverters, unused energies are created due to the asynchronous use of the input DC-sources. This means that when the input DC-sources are replaced by renewable systems such as photovoltaic arrays, some of the input energies remain unused by the multilevel inverter. This paper presents a new multi-input two output multilevel inverter topology that can harvest the unused energies and return them to another load which leads to the harvest of the maximum input energy. The harvest of maximum energy (HME)-based multilevel inverter structure consists of two independent terminals both of which can be connected to the AC load. Another merit of the proposed multilevel inverter is that the number of its switches is comparable to other structures where unused energies cannot be harvested. The nearest level control (NLC) has been used as the switching strategy in the proposed multilevel structure. In order to verify the performance of the HME-based multilevel inverter topology, the simulation and experimental results for a type seven-level inverter are provided by MATLAB and TMS320F28379D DSP, respectively. © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
