This focused and dedicated short research paper examines the architectural design work of a Trustworthy Governable Platform (TGP), that redefines the information paradigm for institutional communication platforms-particularly in relational enterprises-where complex social dynamics are at play. Examples include addressing accountability and ensuring contextual integrity. We adopt a design-oriented sociological perspective to uncover how the platform's creator ensured that its social use and meaning align with the specific situational needs from the outset. The study begins by examining the key features of social interactions that characterise relational enterprises, as identified and articulated by the author of the design process through selected theoretical approaches. Next, we analyse the communicative affordances of technology in action that are necessary to realise these social interaction features. Finally, we explore the design elements of the supporting information and communication infrastructure that the author deemed essential to enable the appropriate options for action. These elements ensure users experience the intended social usage and meaning of the technology in the context of relational enterprises. The purpose of the essay is to stimulate discussion on what we deem a most promising enterprise. TGP has been under active technical development for a number of years and, at the time of writing, is undergoing initial trials for deployment and appropriation. © 2025 Proceedings of the International Conferences IADIS Information Systems 2025 and e-Society 2025. Mini-applications are widely used in parallel computing for testing and benchmarking purposes. However, many existing mini-applications are not suitable for teaching, since they require advanced knowledge of algebra, numerical analysis or physics to be fully understood, which might be beyond the reach of beginners. In this paper we describe a set of programming assignments, called parallel etudes, that have been used in the last years for teaching High Performance Computing at the undergraduate level. These applications are self-contained, self-documenting, and short. They are drawn from more familiar domains such as 3D rendering, simulation, image processing and simple physics models, to be more accessible to students without a strong mathematical background. The mini-applications target shared-memory, distributed-memory and GPU programming. The analysis of the students’ feedback and final grades provides indirect support for the effectiveness of the etudes.

Artificial Intelligence and hybrid approaches are increasingly relevant in Decision science at both the scientific and industrial application levels. While symbolic approaches enjoy well-established techniques to verify their behaviour, data-driven or hybrid approaches can pose a risk in terms of robustness under uncertain conditions, and their behaviour can be less predictable and explainable in unexpected conditions. To address this challenge, the European Commission presented in 2019 the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI [1], and included in the Horizon Europe 2020–2024 programme a financing of 96 million euros for Trustworthy, Human Centred and Responsible AI. Amongst other initiatives, the TUPLES project [2] was initiated to develop the foundations, approaches and tools needed to achieve transparent, robust, and safe algorithmic solutions in Planning and scheduling (P&S), and increase confidence in these systems to accelerate their adoption. TUPLES is planned to release a toolkit including a set of simulation environments, a self-assessment tool to validate the confidence level of a P&S application, and will launch a competition in late 2024 to engage a wider audience and increase its impact [3]. We outline the challenges, approaches and objectives of the project, focusing on the use cases provided by OPTIT in the application sectors of Energy [4] and Waste management [5]. In doing so, we provide a concrete perspective on how Human Centred AI (with a specific focus on robustness and explainability) requires innovative strategies and approaches that will pave the way for significant improvements in the Decision Support Systems of the coming decades. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The novel Industry 5.0 concept leverages data gathering and communication between the Information Technology (IT) and Operation Technology (OT) segments to drive efficient and sustainable manufacturing processes. However, how to properly integrate IT and OT ecosystems to achieve effective industrial asset management has to be further investigated. We propose an architecture that provides an integrated view and unified control of networking and industrial equipment. This paper describes how the proposed architecture can enable energy-saving decision-making policies and support sustainable predictive maintenance in manufacturing through the Asset Administration Shell concept. Part of the architecture is implemented using the Eclipse BaSyx tool, an Asset Administration Shell-compliant framework, to bridge the IT and OT segments by providing a virtual representation of both network and factory assets and a unified control interface.

Modeling in constraint programming is a hard task that requires considerable expertise. Automated model reformulation aims at assisting a naive user in modeling constraint problems. In this context, formal specification languages have been devised to express constraint problems in a manner similar to natural yet rigorous specifications that use a mixture of natural language and discrete mathematics. Yet, a gap remains between such languages and the natural language in which humans informally describe problems. This work aims to alleviate this issue by proposing a method for detecting constraints in natural language problem descriptions using a structured-output classifier. To evaluate the method, we develop an original annotated corpus which gathers 110 problem descriptions from several resources. Our results show significant accuracy with respect to metrics used in cognate tasks.

A growing number of applications require continuous processing of high-throughput data streams, e.g., financial analysis, network traffic monitoring, or big data analytics. Performing these analyses by using Distributed Stream Processing Systems (DSPSs) in large clusters is emerging as a promising solution to address the scalability challenges posed by these kind of scenarios. Yet, the high time-variability of stream characteristics makes it very inefficient to statically allocate the data-center resources needed to guarantee application Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and calls for original, dynamic, and adaptive resource allocation strategies. In this paper we analyze the problem of planning adaptive replication strategies for DSPS applications under the challenging assumption of minimal statistical knowledge of input characteristics. We investigate and evaluate how different CP techniques can be employed, and quantitatively show how different alternatives offer different trade-offs between problem solution time and stream processing runtime cost through experimental results over realistic testbeds. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

The main objective of this paper is to present a generalized framework for automatic positioning and reconfiguration of the camera parameters in order to obtain maximum efficiency in a multi camera network. The proposed framework initially addresses the problem of camera positioning and configuration using a virtual 3D model of the environment, including light modeling as well as the deployment of the cameras. It then utilizes the same setup to address reconfiguration issues that may arise due to changes in the environment. In order to address dynamic task-specific real time reconfiguration, the algorithm relies on a quantitative and qualitative approach exploiting the information provided directly from the camera stream in the compressed domain. There is also a provision for addressing user specific requirements and restrictions at all stages. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Cluster analysis in data mining often requires to quantify the difference between alternative clusterings or partitions of a fixed data set: typically, when varying the input in multiple runs of a local-search clustering algorithm, it is important to measure how apart the resulting outputs actually are. This work addresses the issue by means of paths in the covering graph of partitions, hence dealing with these latter as lattice elements. After paralleling the standard Hamming distance between subsets by counting how many atoms of the lattice are included in a symmetric difference between partitions, the approach is generalized by weighting the edges in the covering graph of the lattice through arbitrary symmetric, order-preserving/inverting and super/submodular partition functions, examples being rank and entropy. The induced metrics then obtain as the overall weight of lightest paths in such a weighted graph. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

In this paper we propose a novel dynamic camera reconfiguration algorithm for multi-camera networks. The algorithm relies on the analysis of the entropy of the acquired scene. Based on the obtained values it assigns the cameras to act as global or target sensors. While global sensors aim at guaranteeing the overall coverage of the observed space, target sensors focus on moving objects. To this aim, the entropy information is used differently according to the operation mode of each camera. The visual entropy of the captured image is used to control the configuration of the global sensors, whereas the disorder of the motion field is adopted as a metric to drive the reconfiguration of the target sensors. In order to achieve real-time operational capabilities, the algorithm works in the compressed video domain, rather than the traditional pixel domain. The algorithm has been tested in vitro, and also by deploying a camera network in a real indoor surveillance environment. In particular, reconfiguration capability of the system has been tested with respect to the presence of people moving in the observed environment. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are a standard feature of any application that exposes its functionalities to external invokers. APIs can be composed thus obtaining new programs with new functionalities. However API composition easily becomes a frustrating and time-costly task that hinders API reuse. The issue derives from technology-dependent features of API composition such as the need of extensive documentation, protocol integration, security issues, etc.. In this paper we introduce the perspective of the API-as-a-Service (APIaaS) layer as tool to ease the development and deployment of applications based on API composition, abstracting communication protocols and message formats. We elicit the desirable features of such a layer and provide a proof-of-concept prototype implemented using a service-oriented language.
