Accurate detection of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) ripeness in complex plantation environments is challenging due to occlusion, varying lighting, intricate visual features, and limited computational resources of mobile devices. To address this, a resource-efficient, real-time detection system was developed using an optimized YOLOv8n model. The model integrates MobileOne modules and Cross-Fusion blocks to enhance efficiency without compromising accuracy. Specifically, Conv and C2f modules were replaced with MobileOne modules, reducing parameters by 85% and 81%, respectively. Cross-Fusion improved feature fusion, and its combination with MobileOne (CF-MobileOne) achieved a 51% reduction in parameters while maintaining performance. The dataset comprised images from videos captured in plantations, annotated into five maturity stages: flower, unripe, underripe, ripe, and abnormal, and underwent augmentation with class balancing through manual undersampling. The model outperformed baseline YOLOv8 variants and heavier models like YOLOv9c and Faster R-CNN, achieving an mAP50 of 0.795 and an inference speed of 140.57 FPS. Hyperparameter tuning with a batch size of 64, SGD optimizer, and a learning rate of 0.01 yielded optimal results. Despite challenges in detecting certain classes due to visual similarities and environmental variations, the system effectively enhances productivity and efficiency in precision agriculture for the palm oil industry. © 2024, The Authors. computer vision has emerged as an important subject of study, with several practical applications in a wide range of domains. OpenCV, a widely used framework, has played an important role in allowing computer vision tasks. This study presents an AI-driven Python implementation of the OpenCV framework to expand its capabilities. Data collecting and pre-processing, feature extraction, model selection and training, and Python-based system implementation are all part of the proposed system. A thorough examination of system performance indicates its advantage over competing approaches. The system’s flexibility enables it to handle a variety of computer vision tasks, such as gesture recognition, face detection, and object recognition. This paper advances AI-powered computer vision systems by providing significant insights into the implementation of OpenCV with Python. Deep learning model for pleural effusion detection via active learning and pseudo-labeling: a multisite study

Background: The study aimed to develop and validate a deep learning-based computer Aided Triage (CADt) algorithm for detecting pleural effusion in chest radiographs using an active learning (AL) framework. This is aimed at addressing the critical need for a clinical grade algorithm that can timely diagnose pleural effusion, which affects approximately 1.5 million people annually in the United States. Methods: In this multisite study, 10,599 chest radiographs from 2006 to 2018 were retrospectively collected from an institution in Taiwan to train the deep learning algorithm. The AL framework utilized significantly reduced the need for expert annotations. For external validation, the algorithm was tested on a multisite dataset of 600 chest radiographs from 22 clinical sites in the United States and Taiwan, which were annotated by three U.S. board-certified radiologists. Results: The CADt algorithm demonstrated high effectiveness in identifying pleural effusion, achieving a sensitivity of 0.95 (95% CI: [0.92, 0.97]) and a specificity of 0.97 (95% CI: [0.95, 0.99]). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.97 (95% DeLong’s CI: [0.95, 0.99]). Subgroup analyses showed that the algorithm maintained robust performance across various demographics and clinical settings. Conclusion: This study presents a novel approach in developing clinical grade CADt solutions for the diagnosis of pleural effusion. The AL-based CADt algorithm not only achieved high accuracy in detecting pleural effusion but also significantly reduced the workload required for clinical experts in annotating medical data. This method enhances the feasibility of employing advanced technological solutions for prompt and accurate diagnosis in medical settings. © The Author(s) 2024.

Machine learning (ML) is poised to play an important part in advancing the predicting capability in semiconductor device compact modeling domain. One major advantage of ML-based compact modeling is its ability to capture complex relationships and patterns in large datasets. Therefore, in this paper a novel design scheme based on dynamically adaptive neural network (DANN) is proposed to develop fast and accurate compact model (CM). This framework constitutes a powerful yet computationally efficient methodology and exhibits emergent dynamic behaviors. This paper demonstrates that the compact model based on ML can be designed to replicate the performance of conventional compact model for nanodevices. For this work, gate-all-around (GAA) nanosheet (NS) device characteristics are comprehensively analyzed for process variability sources using the proposed model. The device geometry parameters such as channel length, nanosheet width and nanosheet thickness are fed as input features to the DANN model. The adaptive neural network learns dynamically by updating weights of the model in accordance with the input features and achieves accurate neural weight convergence. The proposed model predicted the electrical characteristics of NS devices with less than 1% error rate. The model is also implemented and validated for the simulations of digital circuit designs such as inverter, and logic gates. ©;2023 The Authors.

Open-Domain Question Answering (ODQA) aims to answer questions without explicitly providing specific background documents. This task becomes notably challenging in a zero-shot setting where no data is available to train tailored retrieval-reader models. While recent Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT-3 have demonstrated their effectiveness in zero-shot ODQA using direct prompting methods, these methods still fall short of fully harnessing the potential of LLMs when implicitly invoked. In this paper, we propose a Self-Prompting framework to explicitly utilize the massive knowledge encoded in the parameters of LLMs and their strong instruction understanding abilities. Concretely, we prompt LLMs step by step to generate multiple pseudo QA pairs with background passages and explanations entirely from scratch. These generated elements are then utilized for in-context learning. Experimental results show that our method significantly surpasses previous state-of-the-art zero-shot methods on three widely-used ODQA datasets and even achieves comparable performance with various customized fine-tuned models on full training data. ©2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has gained increasing popularity in the area of art creation, by demonstrating its great potential. Research in this topic has developed AI systems able to generate creative outputs in fields such as music, painting, games, design and scientific discovery, either autonomously or in collaboration with humans. Therefore, AI also helped to analyze and study the mechanisms of creativity from a broader perspective: from the socio-anthropological to psychological, as well as cognitive impact of the autonomous creative processes of artificial intelligence. These advances are leading to new opportunities research perspectives, while also posing challenging questions related to authorship, integrity, bias and evaluation of AI artistic outputs. Situationally-aware artificial agents operating with competence in natural environments face several challenges: spatial awareness, object affordance detection, dynamic changes and unpredictability. A critical challenge is the agent’s ability to identify and monitor environmental elements pertinent to its objectives. Our research introduces a neurosymbolic modular architecture for reactive robotics. Our system combines a neural component performing object recognition over the environment and image processing techniques such as optical flow, with symbolic representation and reasoning. The reasoning system is grounded in the embodied cognition paradigm, via integrating image schematic knowledge in an ontological structure. The ontology is operatively used to create queries for the perception system, decide on actions, and infer entities’ capabilities derived from perceptual data. The combination of reasoning and image processing allows the agent to focus its perception for normal operation as well as discover new concepts for parts of objects involved in particular interactions. The discovered concepts allow the robot to autonomously acquire training data and adjust its subsymbolic perception to recognize the parts, as well as making planning for more complex tasks feasible by focusing search on those relevant object parts. We demonstrate our approach in a simulated world, in which an agent learns to recognize parts of objects involved in support relations. While the agent has no concept of handle initially, by observing examples of supported objects hanging from a hook it learns to recognize the parts involved in establishing support and becomes able to plan the establishment/destruction of the support relation. This underscores the agent’s capability to expand its knowledge through observation in a systematic way, and illustrates the potential of combining deep reasoning with reactive robotics in dynamic settings. © 2024 The Authors.

Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) are commonly used in data-driven approaches to estimate the Remaining Useful Lifetime (RUL) of power electronic devices. RNNs are preferred because their intrinsic feedback mechanisms are better suited to model time-series data. However, the impact of RNN complexity on estimation accuracy is rarely discussed in the literature. This issue is important because choosing a lower-complexity model that delivers the same or similar performance as a higher-complexity model can increase implementation efficiency. In the paper, we use three RNN models, namely, the vanilla version, LSTM (Long Short Term Memory) and GRU (Gated Recurrent Unit) to conduct RUL estimation for power electronic devices. We use two accelerated aging datasets, one dataset targeting the package failure of MOSFETs, and the other dataset targeting package failure of power diodes. Our study shows that a lower-complexity RNN does not necessarily deliver a lower performance. Similarly, a higher-complexity model does not assure a higher performance. As such, our work highlights the importance of selecting a proper neural network for RUL estimation not biased towards complex models. This is especially useful and important for implementing such RUL estimation techniques in embedded resource-constrained and speed-limited computins platforms.

The increasing deployment of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) require computational support and coverage in applications such as maritime search and rescue. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can offer low-cost, flexible aerial services, and ground stations (GSs) can provide powerful supports, which can cooperate to help the USVs in complex scenarios. However, the collaboration between UAVs and GSs for USVs faces challenges of task uncertainties, USVs trajectory uncertainties, heterogeneities, and limited computational resources. To address these issues, we propose a cooperative UAV and GS based robust multi-access edge computing framework to assist USVs in completing computational tasks. Specifically, we formulate the optimization problem of joint task offloading and UAV trajectory to minimize the total execution time, which is in the form of mixed integer nonlinear programming and NP-hard to tackle. Therefore, we propose the algorithm of generative artificial intelligence-enhanced heterogeneous agent proximal policy optimization (GAI-HAPPO). The proposed algorithm integrates GAI models to enhance the actor network ability to model complex environments and extract high-level features, thereby allowing the algorithm to predict uncertainties and adapt to dynamic conditions. Additionally, GAI stabilizes the critic network, addressing the instability of multi-agent reinforcement learning approaches. Finally, extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing benchmark methods, thus highlighting the potentials in tackling intricate, cross-domain issues in the considered scenarios. © 2025 IEEE.
