An analysis of intelligibility measurements of ideal binary masked speech in noise for a group of normal hearing listeners is presented. In the proposed model, speech cues in the processed mixtures are encoded by two information channels: a noisy speech channel and a vocoded noise channel. Results indicate that the former dominates for dense binary mask patterns, and the latter for sparse binary mask patterns, as controlled by a local SNR criterion used for forming the ideal mask. Moreover, speech cues from the target part of the processed mixture may be better utilized by the listeners as a result of the ideal binary masking. Finally, the analysis is extended to show a good qualitative agreement with several previous studies of intelligibility of ideal binary masked noisy speech.

Localization of simultaneous sound sources in natural environments with only two microphones is a challenging problem. Reverberation degrades performance of localization based exclusively on directional cues. We present an approach that integrates monaural and binaural analysis to improve localization of multiple speech sources in noisy and reverberant environments. Our approach incorporates pitch-based monaural processing to perform simultaneous organization of voiced speech. We propose a probabilistic framework to jointly perform localization and sequential organization using binaural cues. We evaluate our system on multi-source speech mixtures in the presence of reverberation and diffuse noise and compare it to two localization approaches that do not incorporate monaural cues. Results indicate that our system can accurately localize multiple sources in very challenging conditions.

The problem of model selection arises in a number of contexts, such as subset selection in linear regression, estimation of structures in graphical models, and signal denoising. This paper studies non-asymptotic model selection for the general case of arbitrary (random or deterministic) design matrices and arbitrary nonzero entries of the signal. In this regard, it generalizes the notion of incoherence in the existing literature on model selection and introduces two fundamental measures of coherence- termed as the worst-case coherence and the average coherence-among the columns of a design matrix. It utilizes these two measures of coherence to provide an in-depth analysis of a simple, model-order agnostic one-step thresholding (OST) algorithm for model selection and proves that OST is feasible for exact as well as partial model selection as long as the design matrix obeys an easily verifiable property, which is termed as the coherence property. One of the key insights offered by the ensuing analysis in this regard is that OST can successfully carry out model selection even when methods based on convex optimization such as the lasso fail due to the rank deficiency of the submatrices of the design matrix. In addition, the paper establishes that if the design matrix has reasonably small worst-case and average coherence then OST performs near-optimally when either (i) the energy of any nonzero entry of the signal is close to the average signal energy per nonzero entry or (ii) the signal-to-noise ratio in the measurement system is not too high. Finally, two other key contributions of the paper are that (i) it provides bounds on the average coherence of Gaussian matrices and Gabor frames, and (ii) it extends the results on model selection using OST to low-complexity, model-order agnostic recovery of sparse signals with arbitrary nonzero entries. This work suggests an adaptive tour route planning multimedia system designed to meet the needs of different tourists. Tour route planning is a 'traveling salesman problem' (TSP) type problem. TSP is an example of a combinatorial optimization problem and is known as NP-hard. As studied by many researchers exact, heuristic (approximation) and metaheuristic algorithms are usually applied for NP problems. A promising meta-heuristic algorithm is proposed to solve the tour route planning problems which involves minimization of total traveling time, total travel expenses or the combined total traveling time and expenses. Moreover, a simple exchange local search heuristic is also applied to increase the exploitation (intensification) competence of the scheme. Restated, finding out the optimal planned tour using particle swarm optimization and increasing performance by exchange heuristic scheme is suggested. Simulation results indicate the PSO with exchange heuristic designed provides a promising strategy, and is efficient for solving tour route planning problems.
