All freshman engineering students at York College participate in a spring semester design challenge as part of a year-long, two-course introduction to engineering. This paper describes the course organization, the project goals, and project itself and how it supports the broader engineering curriculum goals of engaging freshman engineering students in a design project, exposing them in an interesting way to the breath of engineering, and motivating them in their engineering studies. The students work in small teams and have roughly 12 weeks to design an automated electromechanical system that first transports three empty Snapple bottles, three tennis balls, and 36 oz. of water to a 2/x3/ operational zone. The machine must fill each bottle with 12 oz. of water, cap each bottle by covering the top with a tennis ball, and then deliver the capped and filled bottles to an area outside of the operational zone. The bottle-filling project serves as the second of two interdisciplinary engineering design experiences during the freshman year. It introduces aspects of computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering, including the following five primary knowledge areas: (i) machining and fabrication;(ii) electronic circuit prototyping and programming;(iii) sensor and actuator applications;(iv) mechanical design;(v) project planning;and (vi) presentation skills. A project demonstration at the end of the semester determines the relative effectiveness of each machine based upon a number of quantitative factors, including the total time required to complete the overall process, the volume of water in each bottle, the number of bottles successfully capped, the amount of water spilled, and approximate manufacturing cost. Some qualitative factors considered are simplicity, creativity, and aesthetics. The goal of this research is to enable mobile robots to navigate through crowded environments such as indoor shopping malls, airports, or downtown side walks. The key research question addressed in this paper is how to learn planners that generate human-like motion behavior. Our approach uses inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) to learn human-like navigation behavior based on example paths. Since robots have only limited sensing, we extend existing IRL methods to the case of partially observable environments. We demonstrate the capabilities of our approach using a realistic crowd flow simulator in which we modeled multiple scenarios in crowded environments. We show that our planner learned to guide the robot along the flow of people when the environment is crowded, and along the shortest path if no people are around.

The robustness of audio fingerprinting system in a noisy environment is a principal challenge in the area of content-based audio retrieval, especially for use in portable consumer devices. Our new audio fingerprint method using sub-fingerprint masking based on the predominant pitch extraction increases the accuracy of the audio fingerprinting system in a noisy environment dramatically, while requiring much less computing power compared to the expanded hash table lookup method, where the searching complexity increases by the factor of 33 times the degree of expansion.

Distributed energy resources (DER), including small-scale generation, renewable energy technologies, and demand response, are disadvantaged with respect to central generating facilities as a consequence of being excluded from regional energy and ancillary services markets. This paper proposes a price-based open-loop control signal to facilitate significantly increasing DER penetration in the power system by coordinating their participation in electricity markets while also maintaining the local system energy balance. The proposed signal introduces the concept of “price droop” that is based upon the concepts of frequency droop and own price elasticity. The use of this signal is demonstrated in a variety of scenarios with DER in a microgrid operating in islanded mode.

The worldwide prevalence of epilepsy is approximately 1%, and 25% of epilepsy patients cannot be treated sufficiently by available therapies. Brain stimulation with closed-loop seizure control has recently been proposed as an innovative and effective alternative. In this paper, a portable closed-loop brain computer interface for seizure control was developed and shown with several aspects of advantages, including high seizure detection rate (92-99% during wake-sleep states), low false detection rate (1.2-2.5%), and small size. The seizure detection and electrical stimulation latency was not greater than 0.6 s after seizure onset. A wireless communication feature also provided flexibility for subjects freeing from the hassle of wires. Experimental data from freely moving rats supported the functional possibility of a real-time closed-loop seizure controller.

According to the OCR character region in OCR credentials image, a new skew detection method was presented by using Bresenham's integer only line drawing algorithm and within-group measure of dispersion. Several directional projection are calculated in the algorithm by using Bresenham's integer line drawing algorithm. At the same time calculating minimal within-group measure of dispersion of the directional projection. After searching minimal value of all within-class divergence, the angle relative of minimal value is the one of the OCR credentials. Experiment results show that the new method can measure out the slanting degree of an OCR credentials image efficiently and accurately.
