Real time rendering of three-dimensional scenes in high photorealistic detail is a hard task, such as in the Ray Tracing rendering algorithm. However, parallel implementations of Ray Tracing have been enabling real time performance, as the algorithm is embarrassingly parallel. Thus, a custom parallel design in hardware is likely to achieve an acceptable performance. In this paper, we propose a hardware parallel architecture capable of dealing with the main desirable features of Ray Tracing, such as shadows and reflection effects, imposing low area cost and acceptable rendering performance.

Mixture of Experts (ME) is a modular neural network architecture for supervised learning. In this paper, we propose an evidence-based ME to deal with the classification problem. In the basic form of ME the problem space is automatically divided into several subspaces for the experts and the outputs of experts are combined by a gating network. Satisfactory performance of the basic ME depends on the diversity among experts. In conventional ME, different initialization of experts and supervision of the gating network during the learning procedure, provide the diversity. The main idea of our proposed method is to employ the Dempster-Shafer (D-S) theory of evidence to improve determination of learning parameters (which results more diverse experts) and the way of combining experts' decisions. Experimental results with some data sets from UCI repository show that our proposed method yields better classification rates as compared to basic ME and static combining of neural network based on D-S theory.

The nonlinear effects of partial erasure and transition shift, however, often limit the performance attained by the partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) detector because of model mismatch. Conventionally, the nonlinear effects are either ignored or approximated by linearization technique. In the article, a PRML detector for the PR4 model including the nonlinear effects has been developed to improve the detector performance. The new representation is more accurate and the corresponding PRML detector has better performance without increasing the realization complexity. computer simulation results show that the new representation outperforms the conventional ones due to the enhanced modeling capability. The method is also expected to be applied in the high order partial response channel.

Feature extraction is an important issue in graphics retrieval. Local feature based descriptors are currently the predominate method used in image retrieval and object recognition. Inspired by the success of Haar feature and Local Binary Pattern (LBP), a novel feature named structured local binary Haar pattern (SLBHP) is proposed for graphics retrieval in this paper. SLBHP encodes the polarity instead of the magnitude of the difference between accumulated gray values of adjacent rectangles. Experimental results on graphics retrieval show that the discriminative power of SLBHP is better than those of using edge points (EP), Haar feature, and LBP even in noisy condition.

A dream of humanoid robot researchers is to develop a complete “human-like” (whatever that means) artificial agent both in terms of body and brain. We now have seen an increasing number of humanoid robots (such as Honda's ASIMO, Aldebaran's Nao and many others). These, however, display only a limited number of cognitive skills in terms of perception, learning and decision-making. On the other hand, brain research has begun to produce computational models such as LIDA. In this paper, we propose an intermediate approach for body-brain integration in a form of a scenario-based distributed system. Busy hospital Emergency departments (ED) are concerned with shortening the waiting times of patients, with relieving overburdened triage team physicians, nurses and medics, and with reducing the number of mistakes. Here we propose a system of cognitive robots and a supervisor, dubbed the TriageBot System that would gather both logistical and medical information, as well as take diagnostic measurements, from an incoming patient for later use by the triage team. TriageBot would also give tentative, possible diagnoses to the triage nurse, along with recommendations for non-physician care Some of the robots in the TriageBot System would be humanoid in form, but it is not necessary that all of them take this form. Advances in humanoid robotic design, in sensor technology, and in cognitive control architectures make such a system feasible, at least in principle.

Core-shell CdSe-ZnS quantum dots have been one of the most actively researched nanomaterials in the past decade. In this paper we introduce thiophene thiol (TPT) as a capping ligand on the CdSe-ZnS heterostructure. These conjugated ligands allow for improved carrier transport in comparison to their saturated, long chain hydrocarbon counterparts. By demonstrating a robust and inexpensive method to deposit close packed monolayers of these nanostructures, we hope to open the door for a new family of low cost inorganic devices employing them.
