Autonomous robots that operate in real-world domains face multiple challenges that make planning and goal selection difficult. Not only must planning and execution occur in real time, newly acquired knowledge can invalidate previous plans, and goals and their utilities can change during plan execution. However, these events can also provide opportunities, if the architecture is designed to react appropriately. We present here an architecture that integrates the SapaReplan planner with the DIARC robot architecture, allowing the architecture to react dynamically to changes in the robot's goal structures.
Magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is being widely used to reconstruct brain white matter (WM) fiber tracts. For further characterization of the tracts, the fibers with similar courses often need to be ...

Monaural speech segregation in reverberant environments is a very difficult problem. We develop a supervised learning approach by proposing an objective function that directly relates to the computational goal of maximizing signal-to-noise ratio. The model trained using this new objective function yields significantly better results for time-frequency unit labeling. In our segregation system, a segmentation and grouping framework is utilized to form reliable segments under reverberant conditions and organize them into streams. Systematic evaluations show very promising results.

Studies indicate that making learners feel good is important only minor to clear knowledge transformation. Many studies have tried to use virtual humans as a part of interface in learning systems to increase the effect of instructions. Based on social interaction and pedagogical theories, many e-learning systems use animated films or virtual reality to boost human-computer engagement and ease their negative emotions. However, affective learning systems still need much research to improve their functionalities and usability. This study proposed a convenient approach to develop an emotionally interactive learning system;learners can express their emotions by mouse-clicking while learning. A virtual human was created to empathically react to learners in proactive and reactive ways to encourage and persuade them into persistent learning and help achieve their goals. Experimental results show that, averagely, subjects can tell virtual human's emotions and agree to its empathic reactions. Persuasion conducted by virtual human could not increase subjects' learning time, but could significantly increase their completion rate of exercises. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Approaches to binaural and stereo speech segregation have often assumed that localization information can be used as a primary cue to achieve segregation of a target signal. Results produced by these systems degrade significantly in the presence of room reverberation. In this work, we present an alternative framework to achieve localization of groups of time-frequency units. We show that grouping across time and frequency allows the use of localization as an important cue for sequential grouping of time-frequency objects. We analyze the level of time-frequency grouping needed to achieve accurate object localization and show preliminary binaural segregation results using the proposed framework. Results indicate that both localization and segregation performance can be improved by grouping across time and frequency.

Humor has a great influence on students' cognition, emotion and motivation when they're learning. There are many researchers studying how humor can be used in the classroom to increase students' performance, while few researching on how to design a humorous virtual human to better students' learning performance in e-learning environment. In this paper, some humorous strategies were adapted and expressed by virtual human to affect students' learning at proper moments. Preliminary experiment was conducted and the results showed that the virtual human with humorous strategies can ease students' emotions and motivate them.

Active modeling is required in learning settings to cope with the dynamic evolution of the knowledge, since learners competences evolves over time as they participate in the course activities. Moreover, one of the main issues in a competence based eLearning process is to deliver personalized instructional designs adjusted to both 1) intrinsic characteristics of users (i.e. learning styles) and 2) the desired and achieved competences in the learning process (i.e. specific and generic competences). This delivery includes the adaptation of the content and the activities in a learning scenario based on a dynamic user model that evolves according to user interactions. In this paper, an approach to support Conditional Plans Generation (IMS Learning Designs) in the context of a virtual learning environment is presented The process is supported by a pervasive usage of standards and specifications (IMS family of specifications) in conjunction with an integral user modeling.
