Open-source solutions for real-time data retrieval in industrial automation and IoT environments

Digitalisation of the manufacturing industries due to the implementation of the ‘industrial internet of things (IIOT)’ is a key enabler for improved productivity and reliability at a reduced labour cost. The industrial IOT connects all the industrial machines such as PLCs, CNCs, and robots through a robust network. The generated data by these end devices plays a vital role in industrial automation, however acquiring the data from machines specifically legacy machines using various communication protocols is the biggest challenge and costly process, especially for MSMEs. Hence this paper discusses the usage of the open-source framework for real-time data acquisition from industrial machines and its implication in Industry 4.0. The paper implements and validates the possibility of the usage of an open-source framework for data acquisition instead of vendor-specific licensed software using several test cases. The paper also validates and proves ‘Wireshark’ can be a universal open-source solution for data acquisition using any standard communication protocols from various vendor-specific machines. Hence this work provides a novel solution for the digitalisation of the MSME manufacturing industries efficiently at the reduced maintenance cost and improve their productivity. Optimal trained ensemble of classification model for satellite image classification

Satellite image classification is the most significant remote sensing method for computerized analysis and pattern detection of satellite data. This method relies on the image's diversity structures and necessitates a thorough validation of the training data using the chosen classification algorithm. The classifying of remotely sensed images refers to the process of classifying pixels into a fixed set of distinct classes based on their data values. The pixel is categorized into that class if it complies with a specific set of requirements. A new SIC scheme is suggested in this work, where, Contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) is deployed for pre-processing the image. Further, statistical features, Vegetation Indices (VI) and Improved Hybrid Vegetation Index (IHVI) are extracted from the preprocessed image. Then, we deploy 2 phase classification process for classifying the image. In the first phase, Bi-Directional Gated Recurrent Unit (BI-GRU), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Deep Max Out (DMO) are used. In 2nd phase, optimized RNN is used for determining the final classification result. Also, the training of the model is done by the new Chaotic Opposition Behavior Improvised Coot Algorithm (COBI-CA) optimization via tuning the optimal weights. The COOT method has been enhanced and is now the suggested algorithm. Lastly, we conduct an analysis to compare the suggested Satellite Image Classification (SIC) model's performance to the traditional approaches in terms of statistical analysis, precision, accuracy, and error measure. The recent development of communication technologies made it possible for people to share opinions on various social media platforms. The opinion of the people is converted into small-sized textual data. Aspect Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) is a process used by businesses and other organizations to assess these textual data in order to comprehend people’s opinions about the services or products offered by them. The majority of earlier Sentiment Analysis (SA) research uses lexicons, word frequencies, or black box techniques to obtain the sentiment in the text. It should be highlighted that these methods disregard the relationships and interdependence between words in terms of semantics. Hence, an efficient ABSA framework to determine the sentiment from the textual reviews of the customers is developed in this work. Initially, the raw text review data is collected from the standard benchmark datasets. The gathered text reviews undergo text pre-processing to neglect the unwanted words and characters from the input text document. The pre-processed data is directly provided to the feature extraction phase in which the seq2seq network and transformer network are employed. Further, the optimal features from the two resultant features are chosen by utilizing the proposed Modified Bird Swarm-Ladybug Beetle Optimization (MBS-LBO). After obtaining optimal features, these features are fused together and given to the final detection model. Consequently, the Optimized Cascaded Long Short Term Memory (OCas-LSTM) is proposed for predicting the sentiments from the given review by the users. Here, the parameters are tuned optimally by the MBS-LBO algorithm, and also it is utilized for enhancing the performance rate. The experimental evaluation is made to reveal the excellent performance of the developed SA model by contrasting it with conventional models. © 2024 – IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Optimizing Parkinson’s Disease Detection: Hybrid S-transform-EEG Feature Reduction Through Trajectory Analysis

With Parkinson’s disease (PD) becoming more common, there is an increasing demand for accurate technology-driven PD detection. This research attempts to address this requirement. Because of its accessibility, use, and non-invasiveness, electroencephalography (EEG) has shown to be a potential technique for detection. Extraction of a wide range of features from the intricate EEG signals of Parkinson’s disease patients has been made possible by utilizing deep learning algorithms and transformation methods, enabling comprehensive analysis. But this data is enormous and presents computational difficulties, particularly when developing accessible and detection systems. To address this, the research proposes a feature reduction model that uses a hybrid approach to cut down the computational complexity. This approach combines four different feature scoring methods-ANOVA F-value, Mutual Information, Chi-square, and linear regression F-value-to generate a unified ranking score for each feature extracted from S-transformed EEG images. This score is thus generated leveraging the strengths of the diverse mechanisms and used to sort the features. The model decreases the feature set depending on these scores and utilizes a deep neural network to detect PD. This methodically lowers the feature count while monitoring the impact on the accuracy of the neural network. Finding the ideal feature combination is the goal, but maintaining the capacity to detect between people who have and don’t have Parkinson’s disease is a must. By balancing diagnostic accuracy and computational efficiency, the suggested technique ultimately yields accuracy rates of 95.94% and 97.31% on two different datasets with the reduced features, which outperforms other state-of-the art optimization algorithms compared in this research. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Application of adaptive guard channel reservation under hard handoff constraint in wireless cellular network

Voice is the king of communication in wireless cellular network (WCN). Again, WCNs provide two types of calls, i.e., new call (NC) and handoff call (HC). Generally, HCs have higher priority than NCs because call dropping gives negative impact to users as compared to call blocking. So, to handle this problem some channels are reserved for HCs. If more channels are reserved for HCs, then handoff call dropping probability (HCDP) decreases at the same time as new call blocking probability (NCBP) increases;if fewer channels are reserved for HCs, HCDP increases and NCBP decreases. If channels are reserved for HCs by considering target HCDP then HCDP will be below the target and NCBP will be minimum for that target. So, keeping this in mind in this paper, we propose a mathematical model that estimates optimal number of guard channels (GCs) for HCs by considering target HCDP and keeping NCBP minimum. The mathematical model proposed assume static traffic parameters. However, in reality, the user traffic is dynamic and usually inherited through its testbed implementation. To obtain optimal performance we propose an adaptive GC reservation scheme by considering hard handoff constraint while implementing this model through testbed. Finally, we have verified testbed results with those of the model-based approach applying the parameters of different Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) standards to evaluate its applicability to real systems. Long-term solar radiation forecasting in India using EMD, EEMD, and advanced machine learning algorithms

Solar radiation plays a critical role in the carbon sequestration processes of terrestrial ecosystems, making it a key factor in environmental sustainability among various renewable energy sources. This study integrates two advanced signal processing techniques—empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD)—with machine learning (ML) algorithms, including multilayer perceptron (MLP), random forest regression (RFR), support vector regression (SVR), and ridge regression, to forecast long-term solar radiation. Meteorological data spanning 13 years (2000–2012) from seven locations across India (Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Patna, and Trivandrum) were used for training and testing. The optimal model was identified based on performance metrics, including the highest linear correlation coefficient (R), and the lowest mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE). The results indicate that EEMD integrated with ML algorithms consistently outperformed EMD-based approaches. Among the ML models evaluated, EEMD integrated with MLP achieved the best performance across all locations, with RMSE = 0.332, MAE = 0.26, and R2 = 0.99. Furthermore, a comparative analysis with previous studies demonstrated that the proposed approach provides superior accuracy, underscoring its efficacy in solar radiation forecasting. © The Author(s) 2025.

Underwater wireless sensor networks(UWSNs)rely on data aggregation to streamline routing operations by merging information at intermediate nodes before transmitting it to the ***,many existing data aggregation techniques are designed exclusively for static networks and fail to reflect the dynamic nature of underwater ***,conventional multi-hop data gathering techniques often lead to energy depletion problems near the sink,commonly known as the energy hole ***,cluster-based aggregation methods face significant challenges such as cluster head(CH)failures and collisions within clusters that degrade overall network *** address these limitations,this paper introduces an innovative framework,the Cluster-based Data Aggregation using Fuzzy Decision Model(CDAFDM),tailored for mobile *** proposed method has four main phases:clustering,CH selection,data aggregation,and *** CH selection,a fuzzy decision model is utilized to ensure efficient cluster head selection based on parameters such as residual energy,distance to the sink,and data delivery likelihood,enhancing network stability and energy *** the aggregation phase,CHs transmit a single,consolidated set of non-redundant data to the base station(BS),thereby reducing data duplication and saving *** adapt to the changing network topology,the re-clustering phase periodically updates cluster formations and reselects *** results show that CDAFDM outperforms current protocols such as CAPTAIN(Collection Algorithm for underwater oPTical-AcoustIc sensor Networks),EDDG(Event-Driven Data Gathering),and DCBMEC(Data Collection Based on Mobile Edge Computing)with a packet delivery ratio increase of up to 4%,an energy consumption reduction of 18%,and a data collection latency reduction of 52%.These findings highlight the framework’s potential for reliable and energy-efficient data aggregation mobile UWSNs.

This review paper explores emerging threats to information privacy and security within the dynamic landscape of Online Social Networks (OSNs), which serve as repositories of vast amounts of user data. The rise in social media use emphasizes how crucial it is to inform users about the dangers that come with it, like cyber-attacks and privacy violations. Even though various social media platforms have been made possible by technological advancements, consumers’ ignorance of these platforms creates serious security risks. Although academics have come up with creative security solutions for social networks, there are obstacles in the way of their actual application. It is essential to continuously assess security vulnerabilities in light of technology improvements. This study examines several dangers to online social networks and suggests countermeasures based on a variety of models, frameworks, and encryption methods. Despite advancements, privacy concerns remain unaddressed, requiring parents to actively supervise their children’s online activity. © 2025 the Author(s).

Efficacy of image based deep learning CNN models for bolt loosening detection in steel structures

Bolted connections are integral components in steel structures and often are vulnerable to loosening due to cyclic loading and fatigue. Detecting bolt loosening in early stages is critical to prevent sudden catastrophic failures. Recent advancements in image capturing and processing, combined with machine learning techniques have significantly improved the accuracy of detecting bolt loosening. Deep learning techniques, in specific those based on image analysis, have proven to be effective tool for damage detection in structural members. In this study, initially captured dataset of 120 images from a laboratory model is augmented to 576 images using the Roboflow platform. Investigations in this work are tied to one image data set and the metrics are analysed for how well a model performs. Usually, it depends on each use case as to which model would be best suited. In the present work, dataset featured two states of bolt loosening: tight and loose. Convolution Neural Network architectures AlexNet and ResNet are applied individually to the augmented dataset to predict the bolt loosening states as binary classification problem. The results demonstrated an accuracy of 87.931%, indicating that the AlexNet model effectively distinguished between loose and tight conditions. Whereas the ResNet algorithm exhibited relatively better accuracy of 90.8%. Further, an integrated hybrid model (CNN model with LSTM) is also applied on the same image data to further enhance the efficiency of the deep learning frame work. The performance of the trained CNN algorithms was further validated with image responses from various real time scenarios of various lighting conditions and found to be fairly good. This study highlights the potential of using deep learning techniques, specifically AlexNet, ResNet and CNN with LSTM for accurately detecting bolt loosening, thereby contributing to the safety and reliability of steel structures. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature S

Generative Adversarial Networks for Motor Imagery Classification using Wavelet Packet Decomposition and Complex Morlet Transform

The area of brain-computer interface research is widely spreading as it has a diverse array of potential applications. Motor imagery classification is a boon to several people with motor impairment. Low accuracy and datasets with few trial recordings present challenges for this classification. This research offers a novel approach to these problems in electroencephalography signal classification for efficient control of neuroprosthetic devices. By using wavelet packet decomposition the proposed method divides the EEG signal into eight frequency bands. Each of these bands were then evaluated by a one-dimensional convolution neural network to find the most discriminative band. Only EEG signals filtered with these bands were used to generate time-frequency images called scalograms using complex Morlet transform. These scalograms were then classified using a two-dimensional convolution neural network optimized for spatial-temporal feature extraction and classification. To mitigate data scarcity, generative adversarial networks were used for effective data augmentation. Experimental evaluation on a benchmark dataset demonstrated substantial improvement: the two-dimensional convolution neural network achieved 93.63% accuracy, surpassing the 85% achieved by the one-dimensional convolution neural network baseline. Precision, recall, and F1-score metrics validated robust performance across motor imagery tasks. Comparative analysis with the latest methods underscored the proposed model’s superiority in accuracy and reliability. Using wavelet transformations, convolution neural network architectures, and generative adversarial network-driven data augmentation presented a promising framework for advancing brain-computer interface applications, particularly in enhancing neuroprosthetic device control. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.
