Graphical Causal Structure and Machine Learning Models in the Study of Infant Health and Mortality

The rise of medical and health data in digitized database storage allows computer scientists and researchers to design highly accurate predictive models using machine learning. However, the dependency of models on correlation fails to establish explainable causal effects, and models show lower performance on never-before-seen data despite their high predictive and inferential accuracy on the training–testing data and the likeness. There is a lack of causal explanation among the features and target of the data. These issues give rise to challenges of adaptability and cause-effect explainability. This paper proposes a model that analyses the effect of health policies, considering health policy and observations on infants as features, whereas infant death is the target. The structural causal model (SCM) establishes the cause-effect relationship between the features and the target. The causal features are highly emphasized and considered in feature selection with proper justification. The infant deaths are predicted using the machine learning models after the causal model establishes and validates the graphical causal structure. The model articulates the graphical relationship between the features and the target in terms of the causal graph (Directed Acyclic Graph) and fitness of the model, along with the prediction performances of the machine learning models. © The Institution of Engineers (India) 2024.

Exploring the Impact of Different Similarity Measures on Query-by-Example Spoken Term Detection

The growth in Internet audio data has highlighted the need for accurate and efficient search methodologies. In this context, query-by-example spoken term detection (QbE-STD) plays a pivotal role, mainly when dealing with multilingual datasets lacking proper transcription information. Recent advancements in the field include integrating convolutional neural networks (CNN) as classifiers, emphasizing the computation of matching matrices for accurate term detection. This research conducts a comparative analysis of similarity measures for QbE-STD, aiming to highlight the performance differences across different metrics. The results reveal distinctive patterns in accuracy, with kernel-based measures leading the pack. Distance-based measures demonstrate comparable accuracies, albeit slightly lower than other metrics, while DTW yields the lowest accuracy. The implications of these findings extend to optimizing QbE-STD systems, guiding practitioners in selecting suitable similarity measures based on their specific requirements. The study contributes valuable insights to spoken term detection, paving the way for enhanced methodologies in audio search applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) have the ability to make communication possible without end-to-end connectivity using store-carry-forward technique. Efficient data dissemination in DTNs is very challenging problem due to compromising in Quality-of-Service (QoS) metrics such as delivery ratio, end-to-end delay and overhead ratio. That means, if an algorithm is design to find highest delivery ratio, then the algorithm does not bother about delay and overhead ratio. Researchers tried to improve the performance of network but, none of them had given satisfactory results to make a balance between all QoS metrics. In this paper, we have proposed a novel approach to optimize the performance of the network using Multi objective harmony search algorithm by creating a balance between all QoS metrics. Harmony search algorithm considers number of QoS parameters simultaneously. We have used characteristics of the node (Speed, residual energy, buffer capacity and encounters) to select the optimum forwarder node so that we can balance the performance metrics for network optimization. We have used ONE (Opportunistic Network Environment) simulator to simulate the proposed method and compared with exiting techniques. Automatic lung cancer detection using hybrid particle snake swarm optimization with optimized mask RCNN

As a result of its aggressive nature and late identification at advanced stages, lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. Lung cancer early diagnosis is a serious and difficult challenge that is crucial to a person's survival. The first diagnosis of the malignant nodules is typically made using chest radiography (X-rays) and computed tomography (CT) scans;however, the potential presence of benign nodules results in incorrect conclusions. The early phases of both benign and malignant nodules exhibit striking similarities. In this paper, a novel deep learning-based model is proposed for the precise diagnosis of malignant nodules. The proposed approach consists of two stages namely, pre-processing and lung nodule detection. Initially, the Lung CT scan images are collected from the dataset. Then, to remove the noise present in the input image, we apply an adaptive median filter. Then, to enhance the image, Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) is applied. After pre-processing, the image is given to the optimized mask RCNN classifier to detect the malignant and benign nodules. To enhance the performance of the Mask RCNN classifier, the hyper-parameters are optimally selected using hybrid particle snake swarm optimization (PS2OA). The proposed PS2OA is a hybridization of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and snake swarm optimization (SSO). The performance of the proposed approach is analyzed based on different metrics and effectiveness compared with state-of-the-art works. The proposed approach attained the maximum accuracy of 97.67%. This work aimed at assisting radiologists to detect and diagnose small-size pulmonary nodules more accurately. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

The established SDN multi-controller architecture faces the challenge of locating controllers to boost the scalability, reliability, and security of the network. Reliability is one of the important metric to handle when a failure event occurs in a network. In this paper, a Whale Optimization technique is used for controller placement and proposed Whale Optimization based Controller Placement (WOCP), that places the controllers in an optimized and efficient manner. The adequate placement of controllers minimizes the overall average latency with a high reliability index. The WOCP method resemblances with Minimizing Latency for Controller Placement (MLCP), resulting in an 18% reduction in latency in the Geant network topology. © 2025 The Authors. We study the Boolean Satisfiability problem (SAT) in the framework of diversity, where one asks for multiple solutions that are mutually far apart (i.e., sufficiently dissimilar from each other) for a suitable notion of distance/dissimilarity between solutions. Interpreting assignments as bit vectors, we take their Hamming distance to quantify dissimilarity, and we focus on the problem of finding two solutions. Specifically, we define the problem Max Differ SAT (resp. Exact Differ SAT) as follows: Given a Boolean formula on n variables, decide whether has two satisfying assignments that differ on at least (resp. exactly) d variables. We study the classical and parameterized (in parameters d and n − d) complexities of Max Differ SAT and Exact Differ SAT, when restricted to some classes of formulas on which SAT is known to be polynomial-time solvable. In particular, we consider affine formulas, Krom formulas (i.e., 2-CNF formulas) and hitting formulas. For affine formulas, we show the following: Both problems are polynomial-time solvable when each equation has at most two variables. Exact Differ SAT is NP-hard, even when each equation has at most three variables and each variable appears in at most four equations. Also, Max Differ SAT is NP-hard, even when each equation has at most four variables. Both problems are W[1]-hard in the parameter n − d. In contrast, when parameterized by d, Exact Differ SAT is W[1]-hard, but Max Differ SAT admits a single-exponential FPT algorithm and a polynomial-kernel. For Krom formulas, we show the following: Both problems are polynomial-time solvable when each variable appears in at most two clauses. Also, both problems are W[1]-hard in the parameter d (and therefore, it turns out, also NP-hard), even on monotone inputs (i.e., formulas with no negative literals). Advancing emotion recognition via EEG signals using a deep learning approach with ensemble model

Human emotions are the mind's responses to external stimuli, and due to their dynamic and unpredictable nature, research in this field has become increasingly important. There is a growing trend in utilizing deep learning and machine learning techniques for emotion recognition through EEG (electroencephalogram) signals. This paper presents an investigation based on a real-time dataset that comprises 15 subjects, consisting of 7 males and 8 females. The EEG signals of these subjects were recorded during exposure to video stimuli. The collected real-time data underwent preprocessing, followed by the extraction of features using various methods tailored for this purpose. The study includes an evaluation of model performance by comparing the accuracy and loss metrics between models applied to both raw and preprocessed data. The paper introduces the EEGEM (Electroencephalogram Ensemble Model), which represents an ensemble model combining LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) and CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) to achieve the desired outcomes. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the EEGEM model, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 95.56%. This model has proven to surpass the performance of other established machine learning and deep learning techniques in the field of emotion recognition, making it a promising and superior tool for this application. © 2024 - IOS Press. UV-Based Degradation of Fluoroquinolone Antibiotic in Wastewater: Effects of Process Parameters, Identification of Degradation Products and Evaluation of Residual Toxicity

In the present work, the UV-H2O2 process was investigated to degrade a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, ciprofloxacin (CIP), one of India’s widely used antibiotics, from aqueous solutions using a batch-type UV reactor having photon flux of 1.9(± 0.1) × 10–4 Einstein L−1 min−1. The effects of UV irradiation time on CIP degradation were investigated for both UV and UV-H2O2 processes. It was found that about 75% degradation of CIP was achieved within 60 s with initial CIP concentration and peroxide concentration of 10 mg L−1 and 1 mol H2O2/mol CIP, respectively, at pH of 7(± 0.1) and fluence dose of 113 mJ cm−2. The experimental data were analyzed using the first-order kinetics model to find the time- and fluence-based degradation rate constants. Under optimized experimental conditions (initial CIP concentration, pH, and H2O2 dose of 10 mg L−1, 7(± 0.1) and 1.0 mol H2O2/mol CIP, respectively), the fluence-based pseudo-first-order rate constant for the UV and UV-H2O2 processes were determined to be 1.28(± 0.0) × 10–4 and 1.20(± 0.04) × 10–2 cm2 mJ−1 respectively. The quantum yields at various pH under direct UV were calculated. The impacts of different process parameters such as H2O2 concentration, solution pH, initial CIP concentration, and wastewater matrix on CIP degradation were also investigated in detail. CIP degradation was favorable in acidic conditions. Six degradation products of CIP were identified. Further, the bioassay of treated CIP effluent indicated lesser toxicity than the parent compound. Results clearly showed the potentiality of the UV-H2O2 process for the degradation of antibiotics in wastewater. Graphical Abstract: (Figure presented.) © The Institution of Engineers (India) 2024.

Computational Politeness in Natural Language Processing: A Survey

Computational approach to politeness is the task of automatically predicting and/or generating politeness in text. This is a pivotal task for conversational analysis, given the ubiquity and challenges of politeness in interactions. The computational approach to politeness has witnessed great interest from the conversational analysis community. This article is a compilation of past works in computational politeness in natural language processing. We view four milestones in the research so far, viz. supervised and weakly supervised feature extraction to identify and induce politeness in a given text, incorporation of context beyond the target text, study of politeness across different social factors, and study the relationship between politeness and various socio-linguistic cues. In this article, we describe the datasets, approaches, trends, and issues in computational politeness research. We also discuss representative performance values and provide pointers to future works, as given in the prior works. In terms of resources to understand the state of the art, this survey presents several valuable illustrations - most prominently, a table summarizing the past papers along different dimensions, such as the types of features, annotation techniques, and datasets used. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
