Empowering Remote Healthcare with Federated Learning for Early Diagnosis of Pulmonary Disease

Recently, the field of healthcare has experienced remarkable technological advancements. However, a considerable challenge persists in providing state-of-the-art healthcare services to individuals in tribal and remote areas. To solve health issues in remote areas, this paper introduces a federated learning framework for the early diagnosis of multivariate pulmonary diseases based on cough (voice) samples collected from tribal regions. The proposed framework performs model training on connected local devices, including those living in remote or tribal regions with limited connectivity to centralized servers. The proposed framework ensures the early diagnosis of multivariate lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), to obtain accurate prediction using ensemble learning techniques. The framework applies a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to extract discriminatory features from generated spectrograms of cough (voice) samples to classify COPD and non-COPD (healthy) using transfer learning techniques. The proposed framework demonstrates the efficacy of our proposed framework in minimizing resource utilization and model complexity, achieving an impressive accuracy of up to 98.62% with reduced communication rounds and latency, thus facilitating the early diagnosis of COPD. The prototype model of the proposed framework offers an alternative way of a fast diagnosis of respiratory diseases based on cough samples collected from tribal people, which is used with the support of pulmonary and tuberculosis experts (doctors and professionals) for statistical analysis of critical cases of COPD for early diagnosis. © 2014 IEEE.

Dengue shock syndrome (DSS) is an infectious disease that affects millions of people every year all over the world. Early detection of DSS is essential for providing effective therapy and promoting patient recovery. In this work, we proposed a method to enhance DSS detection by combining the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm with variance (ANOVA) feature selection analysis. We used a clinical dataset that contained important information gleaned from people with dengue virus infection. The dataset used for the research was collected from patients at Syaiful Anwar Hospital and consisted of 501 instances. Of these, 401 cases were related to DSS, while the other instances were unrelated to this specific medical condition. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) evaluated the most significant factors that distinguished persons with DSS from those with other dengue diseases. After that, the XGBoost model gave the characteristics of the selected features. For evaluation, we split the data into 80% and 20% for training and testing, respectively. The experimental result showed that the created model had a high degree of performance evaluation in detecting DSS. The highest performance achieved an accuracy of 0.839, precision of 0.875, recall of 0.92, and f1-score of 0.897. Most importantly, the model could detect DSS early on, enabling more proactive therapy and faster responses for individuals at risk of developing the condition. © (2024), (Bio Tech System). The synthesis of digital twin (DT) technology into smart grid systems has emerged as a promising approach for enhancing operational efficiency, reliability, and resilience in en-ergy management. DTs offer a virtual representation of physical assets and processes, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, optimization, and control. This survey paper provides an overview of the recent advances in designing DTs to upgrade the smart grid. We mainly focus on aspects of DT concept, DT empowered economic dispatch, DT empowered prediction and diagnosis, and DT empowered frequency and voltage regulations. Finally, we pinpoint potential challenges and conclude this paper. © 2024 IEEE.

Although recent advances in machine learning have shown its success to learn from independent and identically distributed (IID) data, it is vulnerable to out-of-distribution (OOD) data in an open world. Domain generalization (DG) deals with such an issue and it aims to learn a model from multiple source domains that can be generalized to unseen target domains. Existing studies on DG have largely focused on stationary settings with homogeneous source domains. However, in many applications, domains may evolve along a specific direction (e.g., time, space). Without accounting for such non-stationary patterns, models trained with existing methods may fail to generalize on OOD data. In this paper, we study domain generalization in non-stationary environment. We first examine the impact of environmental non-stationarity on model performance and establish the theoretical upper bounds for the model error at target domains. Then, we propose a novel algorithm based on adaptive invariant representation learning, which leverages the non-stationary pattern to train a model that attains good performance on target domains. Experiments on both synthetic and real data validate the proposed algorithm. © 2024 Proceedings of Machine Learning Research. All rights reserved.

Lightweight image super-resolution reconstruction based on mixed attention and global inductive bias network

Convolutional neural network has significantly advanced the field of image super-resolution reconstruction in recent years. The insufficient ability to model global information of hierarchical features, incomplete attention to information, and excessive parameters make some based on convolutional methods face challenges. To address these issues, this paper designs the lightweight image super-resolution reconstruction based on Mixed Attention and Global Inductive bias Network(MAGIN), which directly captures the global information of phased features from the horizontal and vertical directions respectively to produce global inductive bias information. Furthermore, the global spatial attention block is proposed, which can realize the perception of global feature space without redundant operation. To realize more comprehensive attention for features, a mixed attention block arises, which enables the network to attend to features across different dimensions: channel, spatial, and pixel levels. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the MAGIN delivers more satisfactory results than some other advanced lightweight reconstruction algorithms on several standard test datasets under the condition of considering the network’s performance, parameter and computational complexity. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Intelligent supply line surveillance is critical for modern smart grids (SGs). Smart sensors and gateway nodes are strategically deployed along supply lines to achieve intelligent surveillance. They collect data continuously and transmit it to the control centre in real-time. It enables real-time monitoring, fault detection, and efficient energy management across distribution networks. This advanced surveillance system ensures continuous monitoring of supply lines, detecting anomalies, and optimizing operations to maintain the stability and reliability of the SG. However, the reliance of all participating nodes on public communication channels to transmit supply line surveillance data exposes these systems to critical cyber attacks. These cyber attacks include impersonation, physical tampering, ephemeral secret leakage (ESL), and desynchronization attacks. To address these issues, existing key-exchange protocols often fail to ensure robust security while imposing high computation and communication overheads, limiting their practicality for resource-constrained environments. Therefore, we propose a secure and efficient key exchange and tamper-resistant authentication protocol using elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) and physical unclonable functions (PUFs). The PUF mechanism provides robust resistance against physical tampering and cloning attacks, ensuring enhanced physical security for supply line devices. We validate the security robustness of the devised protocol using the random or real (ROR) model. Furthermore, informal security analysis demonstrates the protocol’s robustness in rigorously resisting various attacks, including physical tampering, impersonation, ESL and desynchronization. Moreover, we determine the performance evaluation that reveals the protocol’s superior efficiency compared to competing protocols, achieving significant reductions of 28.64% in computation overhead and 9.96% in communication overhead. © 2014 IEEE.

E-learning can lead learners to achieve learning outcomes if it is designed based on several principles. One is applying assessments that motivate and inform ability levels. In Outcome-based Education (OBE), assessment is integral to the system. However, e-learning has limitations in providing assessment instruments according to needs, such as assessing complex and detailed aspects and accommodating a variety of numerical and linguistic assessment data. Moreover, the presence and involvement of learners affect their performance and learning outcomes. This study proposes a learner assessment system in e-learning with the OBE approach, including learning design, activity performance analysis, ability level determination, and recommendations. This system adds the e-rubric to e-learning to overcome instrument limitations and accommodate comprehensive assessments. Various numerical and linguistic assessment data are unified using 2-tuple fuzzy linguistics, producing ability levels as two tuples. Performance analysis was based on event log data using descriptive statistical technique and alignment-based conformance checking, from frequency, time, and sequence of activity objects, resulting in five activity performance variables. The performance value of each variable is converted into High, Medium, or Low levels. The ability and performance levels are processed using rule-based methods to produce recommendations for learning stages and activity performance directions. The results of this research can be used as input for academic stakeholders and online learning providers and potentially be applied to the advancement of e-learning in higher education. © Authors retain all copyrights.

Art galleries play a vital role in preserving and promoting artistic heritage, but the current state of art galleries in Indonesia, particularly in attracting the younger generation, raises concerns. The general public, especially the younger generation, has shown the lack of interest in visiting art galleries, particularly in Indonesia. In light of these challenges, it becomes imperative to explore alternative approaches to engage the younger generation in the realm of art. Developing a virtual gallery platform that offers immersive and interactive experiences can help bridge the gap between the digital preferences of the younger generation and the traditional art world. By leveraging technology, this platform can provide a convenient and accessible medium for the younger generation to explore, appreciate, and interact with art, that can trigger their interest in the artistic heritage of Indonesia. This research explores the current state of art galleries in Indonesia and highlights the lack of interest among the younger generation in visiting physical art galleries. To counter this trend, a virtual gallery platform is developed to engage the younger generation and stimulate their interest in art. The platform offers an immersive experience, replicating the gallery environment virtually. Through software testing and initial user testing, the platform's performance and usability are evaluated. The findings present the potential of this platform in revitalizing the younger generation's interest in art. This web-based platform provides accessibility and convenience, allowing users to explore and appreciate art from anywhere. © 2023 IEEE.

Machine Learning-Based Calibration Approaches for Single-Beam and Multiple-Beam Distance Sensors

Sensors are the foundation to facilitate smart cities, smart grids, and smart transportation, and distance sensors are especially important for sensing the environment and gathering information. Researchers have developed various methods to calibrate distance sensors;however, they mainly focus on using external information for calibration, which is inefficient and computationally expensive. To alleviate the above problems, we propose machine learning (ML)-based calibration approaches for distance sensors. We develop two calibration mechanisms, where the naive mechanism directly predicts the true distance, while the residual mechanism predicts the residual for calibration. The conventional ML regression algorithms are then adopted to predict the true distance or calibration residual. Experimental results show that the designed residual calibration mechanism outperforms the naive mechanism by reducing the root mean square error (RMSE) by 92.2% and mean absolute error (MAE) by 93.3% in the fitting task. In prediction, the proposed 2-D-residual mechanism achieves an improvement of 78.6% and 65.7% compared to the state-of-the-art method. The experimental results show the effectiveness and generalization of the proposed ML-based calibration method, especially for the 2-D mechanism, which achieves the highest robustness in all fitting and prediction tasks. © 2001-2012 IEEE.
