Parameter-efficient fine-tuning of pre-trained code models for just-in-time defect prediction

Software engineering workflows use version control systems to track changes and handle merge cases from multiple contributors. This has introduced challenges to testing because it is impractical to test whole codebases to ensure each change is defect-free, and it is not enough to test changed files alone. Just-in-time software defect prediction (JIT-SDP) systems have been proposed to solve this by predicting the likelihood that a code change is defective. Numerous techniques have been studied to build such JIT software defect prediction models, but the power of pre-trained code transformer language models in this task has been underexplored. These models have achieved human-level performance in code understanding and software engineering tasks. Inspired by that, we modeled the problem of change defect prediction as a text classification task utilizing these pre-trained models. We have investigated this idea on a recently published dataset, ApacheJIT, consisting of 44k commits. We concatenated the changed lines in each commit as one string and augmented it with the commit message and static code metrics. Parameter-efficient fine-tuning was performed for 4 chosen pre-trained models, JavaBERT, CodeBERT, CodeT5, and CodeReviewer, with either partially frozen layers or low-rank adaptation (LoRA). Additionally, experiments with the Local, Sparse, and Global (LSG) attention variants were conducted to handle long commits efficiently, which reduces memory consumption. As far as the authors are aware, this is the first investigation into the abilities of pre-trained code models to detect defective changes in the ApacheJIT dataset. Our results show that proper fine-tuning improves the defect prediction performance of the chosen models in the F1 scores. CodeBERT and CodeReviewer achieved a 10% and 12% increase in the F1 score over the best baseline models, JITGNN and JITLine, when commit messages and code metrics are included. Modeling Hybrid Feature-Based Phishing Websites Detection Using Machine Learning Techniques

In this paper, we mainly present a machine learning based approach to detect real-time phishing websites by taking into account URL and hyperlink based hybrid features to achieve high accuracy without relying on any third-party systems. In phishing, the attackers typically try to deceive internet users by masking a webpage as an official genuine webpage to steal sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, social security numbers, credit card information, etc. Anti-phishing solutions like blacklist or whitelist, heuristic, and visual similarity based methods cannot detect zero-hour phishing attacks or brand-new websites. Moreover, earlier approaches are complex and unsuitable for real-time environments due to the dependency on third-party sources, such as a search engine. Hence, detecting recently developed phishing websites in a real-time environment is a great challenge in the domain of cybersecurity. To overcome these problems, this paper proposes a hybrid feature based anti-phishing strategy that extracts features from URL and hyperlink information of client-side only. We also develop a new dataset for the purpose of conducting experiments using popular machine learning classification techniques. Our experimental result shows that the proposed phishing detection approach is more effective having higher detection accuracy of 99.17% with the XG Boost technique than traditional approaches. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2022.

An Intrusion Detection System monitors the network for any malicious attacks. It is an ideal tool for protecting extensive business networks from any kind of attack. In this paper, an Intrusion Detection System using Bagging and ranked features has been proposed. The sample datasets for training the ensemble of classifiers in the bagging approach are obtained by generating subsets of the features ranked according to their importance in the classification process. OneR algorithm has been used to rank the features. The decision tree has been used as the base classifier in the bagging approach. The proposed system was able to predict attacks with an accuracy of 99.71% with a minimal number of features and outperformed other similar approaches discussed in the literature. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2023. The paper proposes 'AdaptVR' a virtual reality (VR) system designed to enhance dental training through realistic real tile simulations and adaptive learning environment, to overcome traditional training challenges in dental education. The system aims to provide personalized learning experiences, facilitating skill development and comprehensive assessments for students. The proposed system was tested by 17 dentistry students and 5 experts. AdaptVR framework is done for operative dentistry which is removing decay especially Class I and Class II of classification of caries. Results from the experiment revealed that 77.3% of participants exceed their expectations, 59.1% saw a positive effect on their dental skills, 90.9% reported higher levels of engagement, and 65% indicated that vibration and force feedback provided students with a genuine sensation. AdpatVR's experimental findings show an average accuracy of 50.85% for Class I, 51.7% for Class II, and 82.09% for the Class II box technique. The error percentage averages 49% for Class I, 48% for Class II, and 18% for Class II box technique. © 2024 IEEE.

Addressing Imbalance in Health Datasets: A New Method NR-Clustering SMOTE and Distance Metric Modification

An imbalanced dataset often challenges machine learning, particularly classification methods. Underrepresented minority classes can result in biased and inaccurate models. The Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling Technique (SMOTE) was developed to address the problem of imbalanced data. Over time, several weaknesses of the SMOTE method have been identified in generating synthetic minority class data, such as overlapping, noise, and small disjuncts. However, these studies generally focus on only one of SMOTE’s weaknesses: noise or overlapping. Therefore, this study addresses both issues simultaneously by tackling noise and overlapping in SMOTE-generated data. This study proposes a combined approach of filtering, clustering, and distance modification to reduce noise and overlapping produced by SMOTE. Filtering removes minority class data (noise) located in majority class regions, with the k-nn method applied for filtering. The use of Noise Reduction (NR), which removes data that is considered noise before applying SMOTE, has a positive impact in overcoming data imbalance. Clustering establishes decision boundaries by partitioning data into clusters, allowing SMOTE with modified distance metrics to generate minority class data within each cluster. This SMOTE clustering and distance modification approach aims to minimize overlap in synthetic minority data that could introduce noise. The proposed method is called “NR-Clustering SMOTE,” which has several stages in balancing data: (1) filtering by removing minority classes close to majority classes (data noise) using the k-nn method;(2) clustering data using K-means aims to establish decision boundaries by partitioning data into several clusters;(3) applying SMOTE oversampling with Manhattan distance within each cluster. Fine Tuning Attribute Weighted Naïve Bayes (FTAWNB) is a reliable modified Naïve Bayes model. Even though it is able to provide high accuracy on ordinal data, this model is sensitive to outliers. To improve the performance of FTAWNB, this research modified the Partial Instances Reduction (PIR) technique to make the FTAWNB more adaptive to outliers. Nevertheless, in contrast to the original PIR technique, which substitutes missing values for data values deemed outliers, the PIR technique suggested in this study replaces data values deemed outliers using a Naïve Bayes weighting approach. The attribute values from the outlier data are replaced with the highest probability values for the attributes in the actual class. This PIR technique is referred to as modified PIR. The FTAWNB model with modified PIR has been evaluated using the Gaming Disorder dataset. Replacing the four attributes with the least amount of information resulted in accuracy gains of 99.74%, an increase of 1.53% over the FTAWNB model. The experimental result shows that adding the modified PIR technique to the FTAWNB model can handle the outlier in the data, proving it by increasing the performance in terms of accuracy, precision, and recall without pruning the dataset used. © 2025, Ital Publication.
