Optimizing task scheduling in cloud environments: a hybrid golden search whale optimization algorithm approach

Managing fluctuating workloads and optimizing resource utilization in cloud environments pose significant challenges, particularly in fields requiring real-time data processing, such as healthcare. This paper introduces a novel hybrid metaheuristic technique, the Golden Search Whale Optimization Algorithm (GSWOA), specifically designed for scheduling independent dynamic biomedical data. GSWOA merges the strengths of Golden Search Optimization (GSO) and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), optimizing numerical function optimization and achieving a balance between exploration and exploitation. The algorithm’s effectiveness was assessed using MATLAB by applying standard benchmark functions and further evaluated on a real-world biomedical dataset within the CloudSim environment. The performance evaluations demonstrate that GSWOA significantly outperforms existing metaheuristic and traditional scheduling techniques, achieving a 42.71% increase in resource utilization and a 14.17% reduction in makespan compared to conventional methods. These results highlight GSWOA’s potential to enhance scheduling efficiency substantially in cloud computing infrastructures, suggesting it is a powerful tool for complex task allocations. Future research will explore the scalability of GSWOA and its applicability across other data-intensive sectors. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Additive manufacturing, mainly 3D printing, has emerged as a transformative technology with widespread applications across various industries. Despite its advancements, filament brittleness remains a significant challenge, undermining the quality and reliability of printed objects. In order to address this challenge, this study built a specialized temperature and humidity management system specifically for 3D printing applications. The system utilizes a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control technique to regulate the temperature within the filament storage environment, mitigating the impact of thermal fluctuations and moisture absorption. The system has been carefully developed and tested to assure optimal printing conditions, exceptional filament quality, and uniform print accuracy and precision. Since hardware testing confirms minimum disparities between sensor readings and reference measurements, reliability in environmental management is ensured for optimized print outcomes. Moreover, software testing ensures the PID controller's efficient functionality by providing real-time monitoring and control capabilities. Functional testing reveals the system's effectiveness in maintaining optimal storage conditions for various filament types, improving the quality of prints, and minimizing waste. Incorporating essential components such as sensors, actuators, and user interface elements guarantees seamless operation and intuitive engagement. © 2024 IEEE.

This research aims to develop an expert system for initial diagnoses of skin diseases in cats using the Decision Tree method. It assists cat owners in identifying skin diseases based on observed symptoms. Data from expert veterinarian drh. Ismi Azima, including various types of cat skin diseases and their symptoms, were used. The research employs 80% training data and 20% testing data to develop the classification model. Testing results indicate the Decision Tree model achieves up to 90% average accuracy in diagnosing cat skin diseases based on 50 datasets. This expert system aids in diagnosis and provides treatment and prevention solutions, beneficial for cat owners, especially in areas with limited veterinary access. In conclusion, this Decision Tree-based expert system effectively provides initial diagnoses of skin diseases in cats with high accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.

UAV-Assisted Internet of Vehicles over Licensed and Unlicensed Spectrum: Architecture, Intelligent Resource Management, and Challenges

Benefited from their flexibility and on-demand deployment capability, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as critical aerial communication platforms in future Internet of Vehicles (IoV). However, limited spectrum resources can lead to unsatisfying data rate of IoV, which thus incur large latency, especially under congested IoV network conditions. Although UAVs and road side units (RSUs) can work within the same spectrum and increase spectral efficiency, mutual interference becomes unavoidable. To this end, this article develops a heterogeneous network architecture, in which a UAV-assisted IoV system coexists with a Wi-Fi system: the RSUs can properly occupy unlicensed spectrum to increase the capacity of the UAV-assisted IoV system while mitigating interference, without affecting the performance of the Wi-Fi system. A case study of resource management over licensed and unlicensed spectrum is investigated under the proposed architecture, where time and power are jointly optimized to maximize the sum user satisfaction of the system. We further provide an intelligent solution to tackle the problem in the considered case study. Simulations demonstrate that our proposed case can efficiently improve the sum user satisfaction of the system. Key challenges and opportunities for UAV-assisted IoV over licensed and unlicensed spectrum are discussed, while recommendable future research directions are investigated. © 2018 IEEE.

QuarantivityVR: Supporting Self-Embodiment for Non-HMD Users in Asymmetric Social VR Games

The prevalence of immersive head-mounted display (HMD) social virtual reality (VR) applications introduced asymmetric interaction among users within the virtual environment (VE). Therefore, researchers opted for (1) exploring the asymmetric social VR interaction dynamics in only co-located setups, (2) assigning interdependent roles to both HMD and non-HMD users, and (3) representing non-HMD users as abstract avatars in the VE. Therefore, we investigate the feasibility of supporting Self-Embodiment in an asymmetric VR interaction mode in a remote setup. To this end, we designed an asymmetric social VR game, QuarantivityVR, to (1) support sense of self-embodiment for non-HMD users in a remote setting by representing them as realistic full-body avatars within the VE, (2) augment visual-motor synchrony for the non-HMD users to increase their sense of agency and presence by detecting their motion through Kinect sensor and laptop's webcam. During the game, each player performs three activities in succession, namely movie-guessing, spelling-bee, and answering mathematical questions. We believe that our work will act as a step towards the inclusion of a wide spectrum of users that can not afford full immersion and will aid researchers in creating enjoyable interactions for both users in the physical and virtual spaces. © 2022 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.

We consider random simple temporal graphs in which every edge of the complete graph Kn appears once within the time interval [0, 1] independently and uniformly at random. Our main result is a sharp threshold on the size of any maximum δ-clique (namely a clique with edges appearing at most δ apart within [0, 1]) in random instances of this model, for any constant δ. In particular, using the probabilistic method, we prove that the size of a maximum δ-clique is approximately 2 log_ n with high probability (whp). What seems surprising is that, even though the random simple log δ1 temporal graph contains Θ(n2) overlapping δ-windows, which (when viewed separately) correspond to different random instances of the Erdős-Rényi random graphs model, the size of the maximum δ-clique in the former model and the maximum clique size of the latter are approximately the same. Furthermore, we show that the minimum interval containing a δ-clique is δ − o(δ) whp. We use this result to show that any polynomial time algorithm for δ-Temporal Clique is unlikely to have very large probability of success. © George B. Key-value relations are prevalent in Visually-Rich Documents (VRDs), often depicted in distinct spatial regions accompanied by specific color and font styles. These non-textual cues serve as important indicators that greatly enhance human comprehension and acquisition of such relation triplets. However, current document AI approaches often fail to consider this valuable prior information related to visual and spatial features, resulting in suboptimal performance, particularly when dealing with limited examples. To address this limitation, our research focuses on few-shot relational learning, specifically targeting the extraction of key-value relation triplets in VRDs. Given the absence of a suitable dataset for this task, we introduce two new few-shot benchmarks built upon existing supervised benchmark datasets. Furthermore, we propose a variational approach that incorporates relational 2D-spatial priors and prototypical rectification techniques. This approach aims to generate relation representations that are more aware of the spatial context and unseen relation in a manner similar to human perception. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method by showcasing its ability to outperform existing methods. Crowdsourcing is becoming a trending concept used by many organizations, without being limited to a particular field. As of 2018, crowdsourcing was used by 85% of the largest worldwide companies. This trend of crowdsourcing would be increasing as it offers numerous advantages to companies in achieving their goals, such as the capability of obtaining data and information from the crowd. The crowd-provided data and information contain the essence of human ingenuity, which enables companies to do problem-solving with a human-centered approach. The more contributors participate, the more likely the crowdsourcing program will succeed. Several studies give different lists of factors that influence the participation rate of the crowd. However, there's a lack of discussion about the factors and it leads to a situation where organizations need to examine many factors when developing a crowdsourcing platform to get great crowd engagement. Therefore, this study conducted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to perform screening and analysis of preceding research systematically. The factors in each of these literatures are generated by considering the case of the study or the region of the people related to the research. This diversity helps identify the factors influencing contributor participation in data crowdsourcing from research all over the world. A study reflecting on these research findings would help answer research questions thoroughly. This study found that there are 19 factors that positively influence contributor participation in data crowdsourcing out of 26 factors found in the 16 selected documents. © 2023 IEEE.
