LSTM-XGBoost: An Ensemble Model for Blood Demand Distribution Forecasting – A Case Study in Zakho City, Kurdistan Region, Iraq

A safe and adequate blood supply is essential for healthcare systems to function effectively. Accurately forecasting blood demand plays a key role in efficient inventory management and resource allocation. Traditional forecasting methods, like moving averages and ARIMA models, often fall short due to the complexity of factors influencing blood demand. This study introduces an innovative hybrid ensemble model that combines Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks with XGBoost, harnessing their combined strengths to enhance forecasting accuracy. By analyzing blood donation data from the Zakho Blood Bank (January 1, 2015—July 22, 2022), the model outperforms individual LSTM and XGBoost models, excelling in metrics such as Mean Square Error (MSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE). These findings underscore the potential of advanced machine learning techniques to improve healthcare supply chain management and ensure the timely availability of critical blood supplies. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

A machine learning approach for skin lesion classification on iOS: implementing and optimizing a convolutional transfer learning model with Create ML

The integration of machine learning (ML) into mobile applications presents unique challenges, particularly in resource-constrained environments such as iOS devices. Skin lesion classification is a critical task in dermatology, where accurate and efficient diagnostic tools can significantly aid in early detection of malignant lesions. This study aims to implement a machine learning-based iOS mobile application and develop a binary classification model for skin lesion images to determine whether a lesion is malignant. The research utilized Create ML to develop a convolutional neural network optimized for iOS, employing a transfer learning approach. A logistic regression model was cascaded with the convolutional neural network N to enhance classification accuracy. The model's performance was assessed through various validation metrics, ensuring its robustness and efficiency within the constraints of mobile hardware. A curated dataset from the International Skin Imaging Collaboration archive was used for training and testing. The model achieved an accuracy of 92%, a precision of 90%, a recall of 93%, and an F1-score of 91% in classifying skin lesions. These metrics validate the model's efficacy in identifying malignant lesions. Data curation involved collecting, labeling, and preparing a dataset from publicly available sources, ensuring the inclusion of diagnostically relevant features. The final model was integrated into an iOS application using Core ML and Vision frameworks. The developed application demonstrates reliable performance in classifying skin lesions with high accuracy on iOS devices. The inclusion of comprehensive performance metrics justifies the efficacy of the proposed approach. Future work will explore enhancements in model architecture and object detection capabilities to further improve diagnostic precision and application usability. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Facial emotion recognition is one of the artificial intelligence implementations used to recognize emotions based on data learned by computers. Unlike humans, who can recognize a person's emotions directly, computers need several trainings procedures conducted by humans to be able to recognize a person's emotions. Previous research has proposed various methods with deep learning and traditional machine learning approaches to classify emotions based on faces. Some studies obtained relatively high accuracy, but on evaluation by cross-validation, the results were much lower than the accuracy obtained. Therefore, this study proposes an approach using a modified MobileNetV2 deep learning architecture in the residual layer by adding a Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) to improve accuracy and data generalization. This experiment uses the Karolinska Directional Emotional Faces (KDEF) public benchmark dataset. Preprocessing is done with image augmentation to enrich the training data by resizing, center cropping, random horizontal flipping, random affine, and random rotation. The proposed method is evaluated by 5-fold cross-validation and compared with MobileNetV2 without modification and state-of-the-art methods. Experimental results show that the proposed model outperform all comparative methods by achieving a 5 -fold cross-validation accuracy of 94.387%. © 2023 IEEE.

In the increasingly digitized world, the privacy and security of sensitive data shared via IoT devices are paramount. Traditional privacy-preserving methods like k-anonymity and ldiversity are becoming outdated due to technological advancements. In addition, data owners often worry about misuse and unauthorized access to their personal information. To address this, we propose a secure data-sharing framework that uses local differential privacy (LDP) within a permissioned blockchain, enhanced by federated learning (FL) in a zero-trust environment. To further protect sensitive data shared by IoT devices, we use the Interplanetary File System (IPFS) and cryptographic hash functions to create unique digital fingerprints for files. We mainly evaluate our system based on latency, throughput, privacy accuracy, and transaction efficiency, comparing the performance to a benchmark model. The experimental results show that the proposed system outperforms its counterpart in terms of latency, throughput, and transaction efficiency. The proposed model achieved a lower average latency of 4.0 seconds compared to the benchmark model’s 5.3 seconds. In terms of throughput, the proposed model achieved a higher throughput of 10.53 TPS (transactions per second) compared to the benchmark model’s 8 TPS. In this study, two deep learning models for automatic tattoo detection were analyzed;a modified Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and pre-trained ResNet-50 model. In order to achieve this, ResNet-50 uses transfer learning with fine-tuning. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and computational efficiency of the system being considered. To augment the dataset included 1000 photos that were equally divided between those showing tattoos and those that did not show tattoos. A k-fold cross-validation approach was employed in training and testing the models. Although custom CNNs are effective, utilizing pre-trained ones like ResNet-50 can offer even better outcomes. Specifically, ResNet-50 attained a higher accuracy (0.86 compared to 0.79), precision (0.85 versus 0.78), recall (0.91 against 0.86), and F1-score (0.91 vis-a-vis 0.86) as compared to custom CNNs. In selecting these models for examination, two main motivations were considered. The first motivation is to see whether transfer learning with a pre-trained ResNet-50 model does well when compared with a customized CNN designed specifically for tattoo detection. Secondly,the intent of this study is to know what advantages can be derived from each approach and their demerits too. Furthermore, it seeks to determine if transfer learning can provide an alternative in contrast to the common CNN techniques with regards to precision and computational efficiency. In this research, two models will be evaluated in order to answer the question of what is better for tattoo detection: transfer learning or designing custom architectures. © 2024 IEEE.

Current Sundanese stemmers either ignore reduplication words or define rules to handle only affixes. There is a significant amount of reduplication words in the Sundanese language. Because of that, it is impossible to achieve superior stemming precision in the Sundanese language without addressing reduplication words. This article presents an improved stemmer for the Sundanese language, which handles affixed and reduplicated words. With a Sundanese root word list, we use a rules-based stemming technique. In our approach, all stems produced by the affixes removal or normalization processes are added to the stem list. Using a stem list can help increase stemmer accuracy by reducing stemming errors caused by affix removal sequence errors or morphological issues. The current Sundanese language stemmer, RBSS, was used as a comparison. Two datasets with 8,218 unique affixed words and reduplication words were evaluated. The results show that our stemmer’s strength and accuracy have improved noticeably. The use of stem list and word reduplication rules improved our stemmer’s affixed type recognition and allowed us to achieve up to 99.30% accuracy. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). We apply an information-theoretic perspective to reconsider generative document retrieval (GDR), in which a document x ∈ X is indexed by t ∈ T, and a neural autoregressive model is trained to map queries Q to T. GDR can be considered to involve information transmission from documents X to queries Q, with the requirement to transmit more bits via the indexes T. By applying Shannon's rate-distortion theory, the optimality of indexing can be analyzed in terms of the mutual information, and the design of the indexes T can then be regarded as a bottleneck in GDR. After reformulating GDR from this perspective, we empirically quantify the bottleneck underlying GDR. Finally, using the NQ320K and MARCO datasets, we evaluate our proposed bottleneck-minimal indexing method in comparison with various previous indexing methods, and we show that it outperforms those methods. Over the past few years, blockchain technology has gained significant attention. This surge in popularity can be attributed to the emergence of cryptocurrencies and the development of smart contracts. Cryptocurrency is a digital currency that eliminates the problem of double spending. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Stellar, Zcash, Maker, Aave, etc. become popular and are preferred for money transfers. Smart contracts are the next popular technology on the blockchain after cryptocurrency. It can be considered a piece of code that can execute automatically when the predefined conditions are fulfilled. Researchers believe that the potential of blockchain with smart contracts is only in its initial stages and that its true potential has yet to be fully discovered. Hence, an extensive bibliometric analysis is conducted to understand blockchain trends for smart contracts and to give future directions in this field. For this analysis, various steps are followed, starting with formulating the research question, defining the scope of our research, extracting and analyzing data, answering the research question, and finally, drawing a conclusion. A framework for object tracking in videos with complex backgrounds and obstructions

The research of object tracking in videos utilizes computer vision and machine learning techniques to identify and track objects in the consecutive image frames of videos. The popular algorithms used in the research are YOLO, DeepSORT, StrongSORT, and ByteTrack. YOLO has gained recognition for its hardware efficiency and impressive performance in object detection tasks. It efficiently detects objects in the consecutive image frames of videos. On the other hand, DeepSORT, StrongSORT, and ByteTrack leverage the prediction capabilities to estimate the positions of objects in the next image frames. These algorithms play a significant role to enhance the capabilities of object tracking systems. Recently, many researchers have proposed their methods to enhance the accuracy in object tracking tasks. However, the division of videos into the consecutive image frames for tracking objects can pose challenges, especially when the videos have complex backgrounds and many obstructions in the image frames. In fact, the complex backgrounds with many obstructions in image frames decrease the accuracy of tracking objects in applications. In this study, we present TraObs, a framework for object Tracking in complex backgrounds with Obstructions in the image frames of videos. In TraObs, two novel mechanisms CFM and M-controller are proposed for detectors and trackers to enhance the accuracy of object tracking performance. CFM addresses the tracked objects which are missing in some image frames of videos, while M-controller makes sure the tracked objects with the correct object ids in the system. Some experiments with four testing datasets and benchmark datasets are designed and used respectively to analyze the performance of TraObs. Furthermore, the HOTA and MOTA metrics are used to evaluate our proposed methods.
