Deep transfer learning technique to detect white blood cell classification in regular clinical practice using histopathological images

Leukemia, a malignant disease characterized by the rapid proliferation of specific types of white blood cells (WBC), has prompted increased interest in leveraging automatic WBC classification system. This study presents the design of a robust WBC classification system, integrating deep learning with microscopic image analysis. The proposed classification model is designed to categorize blood cells into four distinct groups: eosinophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and neutrophil. The study employs a Kaggle image dataset for comprehensive learning. The dataset comprises 12,500 microscopic images used to categorize the four blood cell groups. To enhance performance and reduce the likelihood of overfitting, transfer learning techniques are employed. Six deep transfer learning models namely VGG16, ResNet50, AlexNet, MobileNet, GoogLeNet, and EfficientNetBO are used for feature extraction and classification. The results of the experiments show that VGG16 and MobileNet demonstrated enhancements compared to other pre-trained models when evaluated on both augmented and original datasets. A diverse set of evaluation criteria was employed to thoroughly assess the effectiveness of medical image classification. Notably, the VGG16 and MobileNet models accurately predicted Lymphocytes and Monocytes with a 100% accuracy rate, and Eosinophil and Neutrophil with rates of 99.35% and 99.81%, respectively. This research work empower medical practitioners, particularly in the field of pathology and hematology by providing advanced tools for accurate blood cell classification. The proposed VGG16 and MobileNet models hold promise for simplifying WBC classification, improving decision-making processes, and ultimately advancing patient care in the medical domain. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

In this paper, the finite-time stabilization of the disturbed and uncertain rotary-inverted-pendulum system is studied based on the adaptive backstepping sliding mode control procedure. For this purpose, first of all, the dynamical equation of the rotary-inverted-pendulum system is obtained in the state-space form in the existence of external disturbances and model uncertainties with unknown bound. Afterward, a novel command filter is defined to enhance the control strategy by consideration of a virtual control input. Therefore, the differential signal is replaced by the output of the command filter to reduce the complicated computing in the control process. Hence, the finite-time convergence of the sliding surface to the origin is attested by using the backstepping sliding mode control scheme according to the Lyapunov theory. Besides, the unknown upper bound of the exterior perturbation and uncertainty is approximated providing the adaptive control technique. Finally, simulations and experimental results are done to demonstrate the impression and proficiency of the suggested method. © The Author(s) 2022.

A hybrid bi-objective scheduling algorithm for execution of scientific workflows on cloud platforms with execution time and reliability approach

Heterogeneous cloud datacenters are well-suited and cost-efficient platforms for execution of scientific workflows requested from academics. Workflow scheduling algorithms have drastic impacts on the objectives that stakeholders in the system expect. This paper models the scientific workflow scheduling issue to a bi-objective optimization problem with makespan and reliability optimization approach because the users not only expect to have quick response, but also they need reliable executions. To address the issue, a new system framework and different concepts are introduced. A centralized log as a repository module is embedded in the system framework to register all kinds of system failures. In addition to, the new scheduling failure factor (SFF), which has reciprocal relation with system reliability, is defined. Therefore, the broker module quantifies the failure proneness of all resources and the most reliable ones are incorporated in scheduling model. The aforementioned scheduling model is then formulated to a bi-objective optimization problem with makespan and SFF minimization viewpoint which is an NP-Hard problem. To solve this combinatorial problem, a hybrid bi-objective discrete cuckoo search algorithm (HDCSA) is proposed. The proposed hybrid algorithm utilizes different novel Levy flight operators commensurate with discrete search space that makes good balance between exploration and exploitation in optimization process. The proposed HDCSA was validated in 12 extensive scenarios that were conducted on both symmetric and asymmetric scientific workflows in different conditions. The final results prove that the proposed bi-objective HDCSA scheduler has the amount of 22.11%, 12.97%, 11.81%, 12.18%, and 12.42% on average improvement against other state-of-the-arts in terms of makespan, SFF, speedup, efficiency, and SLR, respectively, which are prominent performance evaluation metrics is this scheduling domain. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Sp

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and self-attention (SA) have demonstrated remarkable success in low-level vision tasks, such as image super-resolution, deraining, and dehazing. The former excels in acquiring local connections with translation equivariance, while the latter is better at capturing long-range dependencies. However, both CNNs and Transformers suffer from individual limitations, such as limited receptive field and weak diversity representation of CNNs during low efficiency and weak local relation learning of SA. To this end, we propose a multi-scale fusion and decomposition network (MFDNet) for rain perturbation removal, which unifies the merits of these two architectures while maintaining both effectiveness and efficiency. To achieve the decomposition and association of rain and rain-free features, we introduce an asymmetrical scheme designed as a dual-path mutual representation network that enables iterative refinement. Additionally, we incorporate high-efficiency convolutions throughout the network and use resolution rescaling to balance computational complexity with performance. Comprehensive evaluations show that the proposed approach outperforms most of the latest SOTA deraining methods and is versatile and robust in various image restoration tasks, including underwater image enhancement, image dehazing, and low-light image enhancement. We introduce a method to evaluate the similarities between classes of objects based on the confusion matrices coming from the multi-class machine learning (ML) predictors that operate in the vector space generated by the classes. Operation in the confusion domain allows us to use the distance as evaluation metric of the closeness of the relevant properties carried by the classes. We applied the method to semiquantitatively evaluate the effects of X-ray and carbon ion radiation on cultured SW1353 chondrosarcoma cells with respect to the non-irradiated reference. According to WHO, lung infection is one of the most serious problems across the world, especially for children under five years old and older people over sixteen years old. In this study, we designed a deep learning-based model to aid medical practitioners in their diagnostic process. Here, U-Net based segmentation framework is considered to get the region of interest (ROI) of the lung area from the chest x-ray images. Two standard deep learning models and a developed CNN model comprise this framework. A deep ensemble framework method is presented to detect COVID-19 disease from a collection of chest X-ray images of disparate cases in both segment-free and segmented-based lung images. Different public datasets were used for segmentation and classification to test the system’s robustness. The performance of segmentation and classification approaches returns promising outcomes compared to the state-of-the-art. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Cross-Layer Distributed Attack Detection Model for the IoT

The security of IoT that is based on layered approaches has shortcomings such as the redundancy, inflexibility, and inefficiently of security solutions. There are many harmful attacks in IoT networks such as DoS and DDoS attacks, which can compromise the IoT architecture in all layers. Consequently, cross layer approach is proposed as an effective and practical security defending mechanism. Cross-layer distributed attack detection model (CLDAD) is proposed to enhance security solutions for IoT environments. CLDAD presents a general detection method of DDoS in sensing layer, network layer, and application layer. CLDAD is based on big data analytics techniques, which enable the detection process to be performed in a distributed way, so the model can detect DDoS attacks in any layer on-the-fly and the model support the scalability of the IoT environment. CLDAD is tested based on three datasets, namely artificial jamming attack dataset, BoT-IoT dataset, and BoT-IoT-based HTTP.
