Emerging Two-Dimensional Conductivity at the Interface between Mott and Band Insulators

Intriguingly, conducting perovskite interfaces between ordinary band insulators are widely explored, whereas similar interfaces with Mott insulators are still not quite understood. Here, we address the (001), (110), and (111) interfaces between the LaTiO3 Mott, and large band gap KTaO3 insulators. Based on first-principles calculations, we reveal a mechanism of interfacial conductivity, which is distinct from a formerly studied one applicable to interfaces between polar wideband insulators. Here, the key factor causing conductivity is the matching of oxygen octahedra tilting in KTaO3 and LaTiO3 which, due to a small gap in the LaTiO3 results in its sensitivity to the crystal structure, yields metallization of its overlayer and following charge transfer from Ti to Ta. Our findings, also applicable to other Mott insulators interfaces, shed light on the emergence of conductivity observed in LaTiO3/KTaO3 (110) where the “polar” arguments are not applicable and on the emergence of superconductivity in these structures.

In the last few years, alternative gravity theories have seen increased interest due to the lack of observational evidence of dark matter. Further, new empirical patterns found in rotation curve data such as the Radial Acceleration Rule (RAR) have given new testable features for gravitational theories. In this paper, we revisit two popular surveys of galaxies (Randriamampandry et al 2013 and Bottema et al 2015) which when published were shown to be problematic for alternative gravity. Here, we apply the most recent observational parameters to the surveys and provide fits of Conformal Gravity, MOND as well as the RAR rotation curve formalism and show how these theories can apply to the new findings. We also provide the fits to the RAR and Tully-Fisher relation for each theory and discuss how the RAR may allow for some confining of parameters in the fitting procedure. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

An In-Depth Analysis of Discretization Methods for Communication Learning using Backpropagation with Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

Communication is crucial in multi-agent reinforcement learning when agents are not able to observe the full state of the environment. The most common approach to allow learned communication between agents is the use of a differentiable communication channel that allows gradients to flow between agents as a form of feedback. However, this is challenging when we want to use discrete messages to reduce the message size, since gradients cannot flow through a discrete communication channel. Previous work proposed methods to deal with this problem. However, these methods are tested in different communication learning architectures and environments, making it hard to compare them. In this paper, we compare several state-of-the-art discretization methods as well as a novel approach. We do this comparison in the context of communication learning using gradients from other agents and perform tests on several environments. In addition, we present COMA-DIAL, a communication learning approach based on DIAL and COMA extended with learning rate scaling and adapted exploration. Using COMA-DIAL allows us to perform experiments on more complex environments. Our results show that the novel ST-DRU method, proposed in this paper, achieves the best results out of all discretization methods across the different environments. It achieves the best or close to the best performance in each of the experiments and is the only method that does not fail on any of the tested environments. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. In this study, selective area growth (SAG)s of AlGaN/GaN nanowires (NWs) on miscut N-polar GaN templates were studied and compared with that grown on Ga-polar templates using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The SAG of N-polar AlGaN/GaN NWs demonstrated higher growth rate and more growth selectivity than that of Ga-polar AlGaN/GaN NWs. Additionally, lateral growth rate of N-polar NWs was significantly lower than Ga-polar NWs. Compared to the pyramidal shaped top surfaces of Ga-polar NWs, the N-polar GaN NWs had flat head top surfaces. The combination of higher growth selectivity, larger growth window, negligible lateral growth, and flat head, makes N-polar (Al,Ga)N NWs attractive for a variety of applications including UV LEDs and detectors as well as quantum sensing. © 2022, The Authors. As the demand for renewable energy increases, solar (PV) innovation has become a matter of concern. Diverse research proposals have been developed to derive the most significant benefit from the sun's rays, but dust gathering on solar panels and air pollution are two significant challenges. The installation of 40GW of residential solar panels and solar capacity connected to the grid is a significant accomplishment for the Indian government. Technology development to manage solar panel-based energy generation has been crucial for increasing reliability and decreasing costs. As a renewable energy source, solar panels produce zero pollution while generating electricity. When dust accumulates on the surface of the solar panel, the intensity of the light that falls on it is decreased. In turn, this reduces the amount of electricity the solar panel generates. Since solar panel cleaning is essential, continual surveillance and assessment are required to optimize these processes. This highlights the significance of using machine learning or deep learning to detect dirt and clean solar panels to enhance performance. In this research, we implemented dust detection of solar panels using the InceptionV3 model and obtained a remarkable 92.34 percent accuracy. The dataset was obtained from Kaggle and consisted of 1,200 images evenly divided between clean and dirty panels. Each image is 100 pixels by 100 pixels in size. The images have been assigned to the Clean and Dusty categories.

A SPECTRAL ELEMENT SOLUTION OF THE 2D LINEARIZED POTENTIAL FLOW RADIATION PROBLEM

We present a scalable 2D Galerkin spectral element method solution to the linearized potential flow radiation problem for wave induced forcing of a floating offshore structure. The pseudo-impulsive formulation of the problem is solved in the time-domain using a Gaussian displacement signal tailored to the discrete resolution. The added mass and damping coefficients are then obtained via Fourier transformation. The spectral element method is used to discretize the spatial fluid domain, whereas the classical explicit 4-stage 4th order Runge-Kutta scheme is employed for the temporal integration. Spectral convergence of the proposed model is established for both affine and curvilinear elements, and the computational effort is shown to scale with O(Np), with N begin the total number of grid points and p ≈ 1. Temporal stability properties, caused by the spatial resolution, are considered to ensure a stable model. The solver is used to compute the hydrodynamic coefficients for several floating bodies and compare against known public benchmark results. The results are showing excellent agreement, ultimately validating the solver and emphasizing the geometrical flexibility and high accuracy and efficiency of the proposed solver strategy. Lastly, an extensive investigation of non-resolved energy from the pseudo-impulse is carried out to characterise the induced spurious oscillations of the free surface quantities leading to a verification of a proposal on how to efficiently and accurately calculate added mass and damping coefficients in pseudo-impulsive solvers. © 2022, CC BY.

The intersection of superconductivity and ferroelectricity hosts a wide range of exotic quantum phenomena. Here, we report on the observation of superconductivity in high-quality tin telluride films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Unintentionally doped tin telluride undergoes a ferroelectric transition at ~100 K. The critical temperature of superconductivity increases monotonically with indium concentration. The critical field of superconductivity, however, does not follow the same behavior as critical temperature with indium concentration and exhibits a carrier-density-dependent violation of the Pauli limit. The electron-phonon coupling, from the McMillan formula, exhibits a systematic enhancement with indium concentration, suggesting a potential violation of BCS weak coupling at high indium concentrations. © 2025, CC BY.

In today's complex financial markets, “Algorithmic Trading” has become very important. The study delves into the amalgamation of four pivotal indicators - Relative Strength Index (RSI), Exponential Moving Average (EMA), Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP), and Moving Average Convergence/Divergence (MACD) Relative Strength Index (RSI), Exponential Moving Average (EMA), Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP), and Moving Average Convergence/Divergence (MACD) to create and develop a potent trading strategy. Through intensive backtesting and parameter tuning, our study demonstrates 60.63 % profitable trades on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), India, surpassing the standalone indicators. The Weapon Candle Strategy created using the four indicators presents its efficiency as it was able to achieve a profit factor of 1.882. This suggests that when these four technical indicators combined to make a strategy, it can provide significantly more accurate and reliable trading signals compared to using a combination of two or three indicators. Algorithmic traders should use a multi-indicator approach to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the market and make informed trading decisions. © 2024 The Authors

In the field of targeted drug delivery and pathogenesis monitoring, a Diffusive Molecular Communication (DMC) channel is considered a promising channel model. While the current DMC state-of-the-art literature provides in-depth analysis for channel modeling across various molecular communication systems, it does not include the realistic scenarios of mobile molecular communication, which are crucial for targeted drug delivery systems. In this work, a micro-cylindrical channel for a DMC system similar to a human blood vessel is modeled, considering the coexistence of a primary and a secondary link in a mobile molecular communication scenario. Further, the priority of the primary link is considered to be higher than that of the secondary link. The proposed model overcomes the limitations of previous work by formulating the Concentration Green's Function (CGF) for biological cylindrical channels. It considers the mobility of the receiver and asymmetry in the radial, axial, and azimuthal directions. Furthermore, the effect of various channel parameters such as anomalous diffusion, degradation rate, and channel radius on the concentration observed at the receiver is also shown.
