Physiological markers of stress and neuromodulation (e.g., heart rate variability) are often inconsistent when it comes to quantifying changes in autonomic nervous system function. This inconsistency is explained by the autonomic nervous system's output varying across organ systems, as well as limitations in what each marker quantifies. In this work, we present an unsupervised learning approach we term StressFADS: Stress Factor Analysis via Dynamical Systems. StressFADS overcomes single marker inconsistencies by learning underlying dynamics that are shared across physiological markers of stress. StressFADS's encoder summarizes a time window of physiological markers and initializes a recurrent neural network (RNN) with this summary. This RNN is autonomously simulated forward in time, and the output at each timestep is fed through a dimension-ality reduction stage trained to reconstruct the original window of physiological markers. This forces the model to learn latent representations that capture shared dynamics across the markers. We apply StressFADS to the analysis of approximately 50 hours of 1-Hz cardiovascular and respiratory marker time series from a double-blind, randomized controlled trial (N = 26) involving trauma recall and active or sham cervical transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS). We find that StressFADS learned latent factors that successfully quantify differences between stress induced by trauma recall, a neutral condition, and active or sham tVNS. This is promising and motivates future work in learning latent autonomic states that more faithfully track changes in stress and intervention effects for just-in-time stress mitigation.

The popularity of WiFi networks has led to the adoption of fingerprint-based WiFi localization as one primary method for indoor location tracking. However, this technique requires a significant amount of time and effort to collect data at numerous reference points (RPs) to ensure accuracy. To reduce the cost and improve efficiency, generative models can be used to generate received signal strength (RSS) fingerprints. This paper proposes a Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (DCGAN) based model for building RSS fingerprint maps that can generate a comprehensive fingerprint database using only the location of a wireless access point. The proposed approach is expected to lower the cost and effort involved in the collection of RSS fingerprints while maintaining a high level of accuracy.

Word and Gender Identification in the Speech of Transgender Individuals

Listeners use speech to identify both linguistic information, such as the word being produced, and indexical attributes, such as the gender of the speaker. Previous research has shown that these two aspects of speech perception are interrelated. It is important to understand this relationship in the context of gender-affirming voice training (GAVT), where changes in speech production as part of a speaker's gender-affirming care could potentially influence listeners’ recognition of the intended utterance. This study conducted a secondary analysis of data from an experiment in which trans women matched shifted targets for the second formant frequency using visual-acoustic biofeedback. Utterances were synthetically altered to feature a gender-ambiguous fundamental frequency and were presented to blinded listeners for rating on a visual analog scale representing the gender spectrum, as well as word identification in a forced-choice task. We found a statistically significant association between the accuracy of word identification and the gender rating of utterances. However, there was no statistically significant difference in word identification accuracy for the formant-shifted conditions relative to an unshifted condition. Overall, these results support previous research in finding that word identification and speaker gender identification are interrelated processes;however, the findings also suggest that a small magnitude of shift in formant frequencies (of the type that might be pursued in a GAVT context) does not have a significant negative impact on the perceptual recoverability of isolated words. © 2024 The Voice Foundation

In recent years, advancements in plasmonic devices have enabled the localization of electromagnetic fields at subwavelength scales, contributing to breakthroughs in various scientific and engineering fields (J. C. Ndukaife, et al., ACS Nano, 2014,8,9,9035-9043). These structures are often made of metals and their electric properties are typically represented by the classical Drude model (S. A. Maier, 2007, Springer, New York). As the size of the plasmonic structures approaches the nanoscale, the classical Drude model falls short in explaining the collective movement of free electrons in metals. The interaction between moving charges and the electromagnetic fields can be described by a coupled system of the Maxwell and hydrodynamic equations (X. Zheng, et al., IEEE Trans. Antennas Propag., 2018,66,9, 4759-4771).

In this paper, we consider a multi-sink underwater data aggregation network, in which a set of Internet-of-Underwater-Things devices survey an underwater area of interest and upload their data to a set of data gathering stations. A device-role assignment framework is provided, which captures the network topology and allows multi-hop data aggregation. In this framework, an optimization problem is formulated with the objective of maximizing the uncorrelated data at the gathering stations with minimal energy consumption. The optimization problem is constrained over binary coupled role assignment, inter-device, and device-station association decision variables. An ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm is developed to tackle the complexity of the optimization problem and find optimized solutions. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed ACO algorithm provides performance close to the optimal solution, which is obtained through exhaustive search. Results also show that the proposed framework aggregates more uncorrelated data and preserves more energy compared to a baseline approach, where the devices transmit raw data to the stations directly. © 2017 IEEE.

Car-to-car communication is besides autonomous driving and e-mobility one of today’s most important topics in automotive research. Currently, two transmission technologies are available for safety-critical applications in vehicle-to-vehicle communication: WIFI-based ITS-G5 and cellular-based LTE-V2X [1]. In this article ITS-G5 is used as the primary transmission technology to support safety-critical applications within a wide range of traffic situations by exchanging information between individual vehicles. The resources of the LTE-V2X communication will be used to support the WIFI-based communication in case a reliable transmission via ITS-G5 is not or only partially possible. In a simulation environment several test series were developed to investigate different traffic scenarios, use cases and equipment rates for both transmission technologies. This will show how often and in which situations the resources of LTE-V2X are used.

Transport modelling of multi-phase fluid flow in porous media for enhanced oil recovery

This article studies the combined effect of spatial heterogeneity and capillary pressure on the saturation of two fluids during the injection of immiscible nanoparticles. Various literature review exhibited that the nanoparticles are helpful in enhancing the oil recovery by varying several mechanisms, like wettability alteration, interfacial tension, disjoining pressure and mobility control. Multiphase modelling of fluids in porous media comprise balance equation formulation, and constitutive relations for both interphase mass transfer and pressure saturation curves. A classical equation of advection-dispersion is normally used to simulate the fluid flow in porous media, but this equation is unable to simulate nanoparticles flow due to the adsorption effect which happens. Several modifications on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have been made to increase the number of unknown variables. The simulation results indicated the successful transportation of nanoparticles in two phase fluid flow in porous medium which helps in decreasing the wettability of rocks and hence increasing the oil recovery. The saturation, permeability and capillary pressure curves show that the wettability of the rocks increases with the increasing saturation of wetting phase (brine). © 2020 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

Sketching Approximability of (Weak) Monarchy Predicates

We analyze the sketching approximability of constraint satisfaction problems on Boolean domains, where the constraints are balanced linear threshold functions applied to literals. In particular, we explore the approximability of monarchy-like functions where the value of the function is determined by a weighted combination of the vote of the first variable (the president) and the sum of the votes of all remaining variables. The pure version of this function is when the president can only be overruled by when all remaining variables agree. For every k ≥ 5, we show that CSPs where the underlying predicate is a pure monarchy function on k variables have no non-trivial sketching approximation algorithm in o(√n) space. We also show infinitely many weaker monarchy functions for which CSPs using such constraints are non-trivially approximable by O(log(n)) space sketching algorithms. Moreover, we give the first example of sketching approximable asymmetric Boolean CSPs. Our results work within the framework of Chou, Golovnev, Sudan, and Velusamy (FOCS 2021) that characterizes the sketching approximability of all CSPs. Their framework can be applied naturally to get a computer-aided analysis of the approximability of any specific constraint satisfaction problem. The novelty of our work is in using their work to get an analysis that applies to infinitely many problems simultaneously. © 2022, CC BY.

Topology Rewiring Strategies to construct robust scale-free medical Internet of Things Networks

The Internet of Things (IoT) network topologies are now most commonly impacted by cyberattacks. The scale-free network topologies have demonstrated great robustness against random attacks by preserving the connectedness of the nodes. The scale-free network topologies’ susceptibility to malicious attacks, however, is a significant worry. It is due to the significance of the scale-free networks in different fields of life like medical, transportation, education, agriculture, etc. Also, high-degree node removal diminishes the network's resiliency and compromises the connection of the majority of nodes. In this study, we offer several rewiring techniques for building scale-free, reliable Medical Internet of Things (MIoT) networks that can withstand malicious attacks. Initially, the scale-free MIoT network's performance optimization is ensured using a heuristic algorithm known as the Great Deluge Algorithm (GDA). Then, four rewiring strategies are formulated. The initial approach is degree dissortativity, which rewires the network if all nodes have high maximum connectivity to other neighbors with a similar degree. For the second strategy, we introduced a degree difference operation based on degree dissortativity to ensure that the edges that are connected possess low dissortativity and degree difference. Meanwhile, the remaining two strategies take into account the node load bound and enhanced GDA to increase network robustness. The performance of the proposed rewiring strategies is validated through simulations. The results prove that the proposed strategies increase network robustness by up to 25% compared to Hill Climbing (HC) and Simulated Annealing (SA). Additionally, the strategies show great success in improving network connectivity and graph density. However, their computational time is higher compared to HC and SA. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
