A hybrid convolutional neural network for sarcasm detection from multilingual social media posts

Sarcasm in social media postings significantly impacts automated sentiment extraction due to its potential to invert the overall polarity of phrases. It poses a formidable challenge in extracting genuine sentiments from informal multilingual comments about events or individuals, especially when the message is in a multilingual form. The prevalence of noisy datasets further complicates this task. This work proposes a hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN-H) model to classify sarcastic and non-sarcastic statements. Unlike traditional CNN models, CNN-H integrates character and word embeddings, enhancing its capacity to handle the complexities of multilingual content. Evaluation on five benchmark datasets, including English (news headlines, Ghosh Tweet, Riloff Tweet), Hindi, and multilingual Hindi-English (Hinglish), demonstrates the superior performance of CNN-H. The model surpasses various state-of-the-art conventional machine-learning and deep-learning models, including CNN, achieving an impressive F1-score of 93.0% on the multilingual dataset. The incorporation of character and word embeddings proves pivotal in mitigating the impact of noisy datasets, prevalent in social media posts. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

GENOCARE PROGNOSTICATOR MODEL: HOST GENETICS PREDICT SEVERITY OF INFECTIOUS DISEASE

Scientific community understanding of the variance in severity of infectious disease like COVID-19 across patients is an important area of focus. The article presents an innovative voting ensemble GenoCare Prognosticator (GCP) model that incorporates XGBoost and Random Forest classifiers, two cutting-edge machine learning approaches. A large dataset that incorporates medical covariates like gender and age along with biological WES (Whole Exome Sequencing) data was used to train these models. Five-fold stratified cross-validation was used to process the dataset in order to improve model stability and avoid overfitting. Two medical covariates and sixteen recognized candidate gene variants were among the eighteen major features on which our GCP model had been verified using data from earlier studies. Specific post-hoc clarification of the model's predictions was provided by ExplainerDashboard, a Python open-source library, to improve interpretability. Furthermore, we utilized OpenTarget and Enrichr, two bioinformatic resources, to establish connections between the discovered variations in genetics and pertinent ontologies, biological pathways, and possible drug/disease relationships. Unsupervised clustering of SHAP key feature values was included in the analysis, which revealed intricate genetic interactions that affect the severity of the disease. Our results show that although gender and age are the main factors influencing the severity of COVID-19, complex genetic interactions cause severe symptoms in a specific subset of patients. This work contributes to our comprehension of the biological variables influencing the severity of COVID-19 and offers a reliable, comprehensible model that can help recognize patients at high risk and guide individualized treatment plans. © (2025), (West University of Timisoara). FLAG: frequency-based local and global network for face forgery detection

Deepfake detection aims to mitigate the threat of manipulated content by identifying and exposing forgeries. However, previous methods primarily tend to perform poorly when confronted with cross-dataset scenarios. To address the above issue, we propose an innovative hybrid network called the Frequency-based Local and Global (FLAG) network to explore local and global information with the help of frequency-domain cues for better generalization capability. In consideration of the fact that forged faces often exhibit flaws in the frequency domain, we design a Frequency-based Attention Enhancement Module (FAEM) to enhance the aggregation of CNN and Vision Transformer (ViT). In this design, local features from CNN are attentively enhanced by selected frequency coefficients in FAEM, facilitating generalizable global features learning by the ViT module. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated via numerous experiments and the generalization performance is improved under cross-dataset scenarios. Especially, the proposed method have obtained an AUC of 99.26% and an ACC of 96.56% using intra-dataset experimental results on FaceForensics++ (C23). © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Salp swarm algorithm using lens opposition-based learning and local search for constrained optimization problems

The Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) simulates how salps forage and travel in the ocean. SSA suffers from low initial population diversity, improper balancing of exploration and exploitation, and slow convergence speed. Thus, we have proposed a novel variant of SSA (LOLSSA) by integrating lens opposition learning with the fundamental evolutionary techniques of SSA to increase the initial population variety. During exploration, the information about the local best position for each individual is effectively shared with the follower, using the salp position update process to avoid getting stuck at the local optimum. At the end of each iteration, the local search algorithm is utilized to increase exploitation. Additionally, the leader’s salp position incorporates inertia weight to speed up the convergence speed. Swarm intelligence algorithms have proven their efficacy in feature selection, since they search for an optimal set of features in a large search area that will have the best impact on the accuracy of the training system. LOLSSA is thus employed for feature selection to select informative features in 11 high-dimensional datasets, where it outperforms well-known metaheuristics in average fitness, accuracy, and average number of feature reductions. In the software-as-a-service cloud computing model, a task scheduling problem is solved to satisfy the QoS requirement of both the service provider and the user. Experiments show that LOLSSA optimizes this problem in terms of different performance metrics. LOLSSA also outperforms other metaheuristics regarding 23 well-known benchmark functions, IEEE CEC-C06 2019, and CEC-06 2020 benchmark functions, and in solving engineering design problems. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

An improved image compression framework in modern multimedia applications using tetrolet transformation

The fast advancement of the multimedia era has led to an explosion in the use and technology of large amounts of digital snapshots. It has created a developing call for Image compression techniques that can reduce the dimensions of Image without compromising their perceptual excellence. Lossless picture compression techniques have emerged as a popular answer in this regard, as they maintain the precise statistics of the original Image. However, current lossless compression techniques face demanding situations in accomplishing high compression ratios without sacrificing the picture best. This paper proposes a more robust lossless Image compression framework based on the Tetrolet transformation. The framework introduces an adaptive quantization method, which adjusts the quantization step length based totally on the neighborhood Image characteristics, resulting in better compression overall performance for exclusive sorts of Image. Context modeling is also included in the framework to make the most of the inter-Image correlations inside the Image. This method uses context information from the Detroit-converted coefficients, which might be used to estimate the probability of prevalence for every Image value. The proposed model obtained 94.09% accuracy, 92.90% Precision, 95.25% Recall, 92.91% F1-Score and 93.87% Compression Duration. Multilevel characterization of unknown protein sequences using hierarchical long short term memory model

Multilevel characterization of the recently developed Unknown Protein Sequence (UPS) is significant for the drug-designing, disease-diagnosis, and treatment plans. UPS can demonstrate harmful as well as useful characters. Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) based Multilevel Protein Characterization (ML_PC) model using Neuro-Fuzzy Classifier (NFC) and transfer learning has been proposed in this paper for characteristics, species, and function prediction of the UPS. Gram Negative (GN) dataset with known 2286 protein sequences, is used for formation and validation of the ML_PC model. Thereafter NFC is applied at initial stage of the validated ML_PC model to filter the 518 independent protein sequences of the UPS dataset as GN or Non-GN in context with known GN dataset. However, NFC is competent to handle likelihood classification complications of supervised learning. Characteristics, species, and functions of the filtered GN UPS have been predicted in succeeding levels of the ML_PC framework through Protein Characterization (PC) model. LSTM and transfer learning based PC model has been trained and validated using augmented feature of the known GN protein sequence samples, while tested with UPS and filtered GN protein sequences. Transfer learning has been applied as requisite postprocessing to overcome overfitting in the prediction of bacterial protein species with insufficient protein sequence samples. Performance of the multilevel model is improved by 7.52% after combining with transfer learning and NFC. ML_PC model has been compatible to extract relevant biological information of the UPS in context to various categories of bacterial proteins. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Background: The automated classification of videos through artificial neural networks is addressed in this work. To explore the concepts and measure the results, the data set UCF101 is used, consisting of video clips taken from YouTube to recognize actions. The study is carried out with the authors' resources to determine the feasibility of independent research in the area. Methods: This work was developed in the Python programming language using the Keras library with Tensorflow as the back-end. The objective is to develop a network that presents performance compatible with the state of the art in terms of classifying videos according to the actions taken. Results: Given the hardware limitations, there is considerable distance between the implementation possibilities in this work and what is known as the state-of-the-art. Conclusion: Throughout the work, some aspects in which this limitation influenced the development are presented, but it is shown that this realization is feasible and that obtaining expressive results is possible 98.6% accuracy is obtained in the UCF101 data set, compared to the 98 percentage points of the best result ever reported, using, however, considerably fewer resources. In addition, the importance of transfer learning in achieving expressive results as well as the different performances of each architecture are reviewed. Thus, this work may open doors to carry patent-based outcomes. © 2025 Bentham science Publishers.

An ensemble approach for classification of diabetic retinopathy in fundus image

Diabetes-oriented diabetic retinopathy impacts the blood vessels in the region of the retina to enlarge and leak blood and other fluids. In most cases, diabetic retinopathy affects both eyes. If left untreated, it would eventually lead to blindness. Diabetic Retinopathy is so widespread that around 93 million adults are affected by it on a worldwide scale. Early identification and treatment would reduce the danger of serious diabetic retinopathy visual impairment. To achieve early detection, we can make use of our advancement in image processing to diagnose how severely the patient is affected by diabetic retinopathy. Using a patient’s fundus image and modern deep learning methods, we will be able to classify the result into five categories of severity: unaffected, severe, mild, moderate, and proliferate. Based on the results, the doctor would be able to determine what type of treatment is required to further avoid vision loss. The strategy outlined in this work is to employ five well-known deep learning models, namely Inception ResNet V2, VGG19, Xception, ResNet50, DenseNet112, and integrate their outcomes successfully utilizing ensemble learning. The experimentation outcome displays that the proposed approach classifies all the classes of Diabetic Retinopathy and performs better compared to other methods with a Specificity of 92.02%. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.
