The integration of computing with memory is essential for distributed, massively parallel, and adaptive architectures such as neural networks in artificial intelligence (AI). Accelerating AI can be achieved through photonic computing, but it requires nonvolatile photonic memory capable of rapid updates during on-chip training sessions or when new information becomes available during deployment. Phase-change materials (PCMs) are promising for providing compact, nonvolatile optical weighting;however, they face limitations in terms of bit precision, programming speed, and cycling endurance. Here, we propose a novel photonic memory cell that merges nonvolatile photonic weighting using PCMs with high-speed, volatile tuning enabled by an integrated PN junction. Our experiments demonstrate that the same PN modulator, fabricated via a foundry-compatible process, can achieve dual functionality. It supports coarse programmability for setting initial optical weights and facilitates high-speed fine-tuning to adjust these weights dynamically. The result showcases a 400-fold increase in volatile tuning speed and a 10,000-fold enhancement in efficiency. This multifunctional photonic memory with volatile and nonvolatile capabilities could significantly advance the performance and versatility of photonic memory cells, providing robust solutions for dynamic computing environments. Ultrawide bandgap heterojunction p-n diodes with polarization-induced AlGaN p-type layers are demonstrated using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on bulk AlN substrates. Current-voltage characteristics show a turn on voltage of Vbi ≈ 5.5 V, a minimum room temperature ideality factor of η ≈ 1.63, and more than 12 orders of current modulation at room temperature. Stable current operation of the ultrawide bandgap semiconductor diode is measured up to a temperature of 300◦C. The one-sided n+-p heterojunction diode design enables a direct measurement of the spatial distribution of polarization-induced mobile hole density in the graded AlGaN layer from the capacitance-voltage profile. The measured average mobile hole density is p ∼ 5.7 × 1017 cm−3, in close agreement with what is theoretically expected from distributed polarization doping. Light emission peaked at 260 nm (4.78 eV) observed in electroluminescence corresponds to interband radiative recombination in the n+ AlGaN layer. A much weaker deep-level emission band observed at 3.4 eV is attributed to cation-vacancy and silicon complexes in the heavily Si-doped AlGaN layer. These results demonstrate that distributed polarization doping enables ultrawide bandgap semiconductor heterojunction p-n diodes that have wide applications ranging from power electronics to deep-ultraviolet photonics. In the Internet of Things (IoT), sensors measure data and transfer their measurements to servers on the Internet. Street lamps cover a large area, are in the proximity of buildings and sensors and thereby provide an ideal gateway for the IoT. In this paper, we introduce a system consisting of a transport network of street lamps operating in the 868 MHz ISM-band and a sensor network operating at 2.4 GHz ISM-band. Therefore, each street lamp contains at least two radio frequency equipped modules that communicate with each other via a local short-range wired bus system. We set up the nodes with the Contiki-NG operating system and an open protocol stack with state-of-the-art protocols for our applications. This solution serves as an open architecture for the IoT which is portable and flexible. The first results of our testbed and simulation show the functionality of the system. This research is dedicated to exploring and identifying the most effective design for an energy source tailored specifically to meet the electricity demands of a residential community. In an era where energy efficiency and sustainability are paramount, this study emphasizes the importance of technical and economic considerations in energy sourcing. It posits that any viable solution must not only be efficient in its energy production and consumption but also reliable in its delivery and financially feasible for the residents who will depend on it. To address this multifaceted challenge, the study proposes the innovative use of a rotation-invariant coordinate convolutional neural network in conjunction with binary battle royale optimization techniques. These advanced methodologies are selected for their potential to enhance the modelling and optimization processes involved in energy source design. The primary goal of employing these methods is to minimize two critical factors: the net present cost of the energy system and the overall energy cost incurred by the residents. By focusing on these objectives, the research aims to ensure that the proposed energy solutions are not only cost-effective but also sustainable over the long term. To rigorously test the proposed model and evaluate its performance, the research is conducted using the MATLAB platform. The study employs established methodologies and performance metrics to assess the outcomes of the model, ensuring that the findings are both credible and applicable to real-world scenarios. Through comprehensive testing and detailed analysis, this research aims to provide significant insights and actionable recommendations for the optimal design of energy sources in residential areas. This study introduces "InstaSight," a system enabling visually impaired individuals to engage with social media focused on visual content. InstaSight integrates a Single Board computer, head-mounted webcam, and Bluetooth headset for seamless voice interactions. By utilizing the APIs of social media, speech recognition, and Large Language Models (LLMs), users can post photos and videos with voice-to-text captions and listen to comments converted from text or images. To own a house is dream of many. However, in this age of inflation and sky rocketing housing prices, its not always easy to find dream home within the constrained budget. Also, in addition to budget, there are several other factors that contributes towards finding the right home-location, ease of access, transportation etc. In such a scenario, a house price predicting system will be helpful for both buyers and sellers. This research aims to predict house prices in IOWA state, USA using regression analysis. The prediction is arrived at by help of various explanatory variables such as area of the property, location of the house, material used for construction, age of the property, number of bedrooms and garages and so on. This paper elaborates on the performance of Linear regression and Ridge regularization for model prediction. Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC), as a strategy to dissipate heat through an atmospheric transparency window (ATW) to outer space without any extra energy consumption, has been recently considered as a novel approach for global net-zero emissions. However, limited to expensive manufacturing, poor thermal/chemical stability, or insufficient weather-resistance, the development of a PDRC building material for long-term outdoor usages still remains a challenge. Here, a scalable superhydrophobic silica metafibers (sh-SMF) was fabricated via an electrospinning process combined with the fluorosilane-modification on fiber surface. The optically engineered sh-SMF could attain an extremely high average reflectivity (∼97 %) with near-zero absorption in the solar spectral region, due to the multiple backscattering at the fiber/air interfaces. In addition, the sh-SMF possessed a high average emissivity (∼90 %) in ATW, originated from the strong phonon resonances of the abundant Si-O bonds. Thus, the optimal sh-SMF realized a sub-ambient cooling performance of 6 °C (4 °C in nighttime) and the maximum cooling power of 112 W/m2 (87 W/m2 in nighttime) under a solar irradiance of ∼790 W/m2. Besides, the temperature decline for the sh-SMF-covered building and vehicle models could also achieve 12.7 °C and 17 °C under sunlight, respectively. Noteworthily, the ceramic sh-SMF could withstand high temperatures over 1200 °C, which might effectively prolong the time for resident to evacuate from buildings in fireground situation. Moreover, the superhydrophobic surface (contact angle=155°) of sh-SMF demonstrated attractive self-cleaning and anti-mildew properties. Furthermore, the excellent weather resistance against acid rain and ultraviolet exposure endowed the sh-SMF with long-term cooling performance. Finally, the sh-SMF with above mentioned properties opens a path for future energy-efficient and sustainable architectural applications. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

The emerging field of free-electron quantum optics enables electron-photon entanglement and holds the potential for generating nontrivial photon states for quantum information processing. Although recent experimental studies have entered the quantum regime, rapid theoretical developments predict that qualitatively unique phenomena only emerge beyond a certain interaction strength. It is thus pertinent to identify the maximal electron-photon interaction strength and the materials, geometries, and particle energies that enable one to approach it. We derive an upper limit to the quantum vacuum interaction strength between free electrons and single-mode photons, which illuminates the conditions for the strongest interaction. Crucially, we obtain an explicit energy selection recipe for electrons and photons to achieve maximal interaction at arbitrary separations and identify two optimal regimes favoring either fast or slow electrons over those with intermediate velocities. We validate the limit by analytical and numerical calculations on canonical geometries and provide near-optimal designs indicating the feasibility of strong quantum interactions. Our findings offer fundamental intuition for maximizing the quantum interaction between free electrons and photons and provide practical design rules for future experiments on electron-photon and electron-mediated photon-photon entanglement. They should also enable the evaluation of key metrics for applications such as the maximum power of free-electron radiation sources and the maximum acceleration gradient of dielectric laser accelerators.

In recent years, deep-learning-based approaches have been introduced to solving time-series forecasting-related problems. These novel methods have demonstrated impressive performance in univariate and low-dimensional multivariate time-series forecasting tasks. However, when these novel methods are used to handle high-dimensional multivariate forecasting problems, their performance is highly restricted by a practical training time and a reasonable GPU memory configuration. In this paper, inspired by a change of basis in the Hilbert space, we propose a flexible data feature extraction technique that excels in high-dimensional multivariate forecasting tasks. Our approach was originally developed for the National science Foundation (NSF) Algorithms for Threat Detection (ATD) 2022 Challenge. Implemented using the attention mechanism and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) architecture, our method demonstrates great performance and compatibility. Our models trained on the GDELT Dataset finished 1st and 2nd places in the ATD sprint series and hold promise for other datasets for time series forecasting. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. In this work, we present methods for state estimation in continuous-discrete nonlinear systems involving stochastic differential equations. We present the extended Kalman filter, the unscented Kalman filter, the ensemble Kalman filter, and a particle filter. We implement the state estimation methods in Matlab. We evaluate the performance of the methods on a simulation of the modified four-tank system. We implement the state estimation methods for non-stiff systems, i.e., using an explicit numerical integration scheme. The implementation of the extended Kalman filter utilises the Joseph stabilising form for numerical stability. We evaluate the accuracy of the state estimation methods in terms of the mean absolute percentage error over the simulation horizon. We show that each method successfully estimates the states and unmeasured disturbances of the simulated modified four-tank system. Finally, we present conclusions. Copyright © 2022, The Authors.
